In our economic experiment, having voice, i.e., the opportunity to state one's opinion prior to a decision, significantly increases subordinates' subsequent kindness towards the authority. These positive effects occur irrespectively of the decisions' content. The experimental findings stress the positive effects of voice when subordinates and authorities interact. Our results suggest that in organizations, but also in the legal and political arena, participative decision-making can be used to guide people's actions after decisions have been taken.

Book excerpt: Social media are implemented by organisations to enhance productivity and knowledge sharing among employees, but they can also support group deliberation and employee voice. This paper presents a case study of an online deliberation initiative involving the discussion of a contentious internal policy within an organisation of around 550 knowledge workers. The deliberation process lasted 5 weeks and actively involved 167 employees. Different sources of information (user interaction logs, activity patterns, questionnaire responses) were analysed to investigate the impact of participation, or non-participation, on the level of satisfaction with the deliberation, and on the understanding of the issue discussed. The findings suggest that (1) interest is a driver for participation, but it does not explain active participation, (2) participation, either active or passive, positively influences the understanding of the issue and (3) satisfaction with the outcome is not related to participation, but it may support participation in future initiatives.

Book excerpt: Many organizations across the United States were severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, including institutions of higher education. Campus leaders needed to make decisions about closing campuses, increasing financial constraints, shifts in research, and changing class modalities. Past research shows that one preferred method for making decisions during an organizational crisis is using teams of decision-makers, although there has been little research focused on the composition of these teams. Others advocate for the inclusion of various stakeholders in the decision-making structure; however, it is not known how often stakeholders, including faculty, below-director-level staff, and students, are included in decision-making. This dissertation asks three questions: (1) What stakeholders are included on crisis decision-making teams at organizations of higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic? (2) What institutional factors influence stakeholder participation in crisis decision-making teams at organizations of higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic? (3) How were stakeholder voices included in decision-making teams during the COVID-19 decision-making process? The first phase, answering the first two research questions, utilizes a content analysis and survey of 150 US higher education institutions to investigate the inclusion of stakeholders in COVID-19 decision-making teams. Institutional data from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education was used to compare differences based on institution types and sizes. The results show about half of the decision-making teams included stakeholders. Faculty are the most likely to be included and students are the least likely. There is no statistically significant association between any institutional characteristic and stakeholder inclusion. Larger decision-making teams are more likely to include stakeholders than smaller teams. The second phase, answering the third research question, utilizes 20 semi-structured interviews of decision-making team members. Results show faculty are most likely to be included and considered in the decision-making process. While students are less likely to be included, there are ways for their perspectives to be included in decision-making. Staff member perspectives were the least included in decision-making. These findings are the first examination of stakeholder inclusion in higher education crisis decision-making and show that inclusion is limited, despite previous research showing the benefits. They serve as a foundation for future research and offer considerations for practitioners.

To that end, we must change both our production and our consumption patterns. Some argue that this implies the abolition of democratic processes, and thus of citizens' participation in environmental policy. Others argue the opposite: the only way to avoid impending environmental disaster is by engaging in common deliberation and contemplation. Is participation, then, a negative force or not? This volume is one of the first coordinated attempts to study the relationship between democratic, participatory forms of decision making and the quality of environmental decisions. The central question is how can the normatively desirable practice of participatory decision making be combined with an effective approach to environmental issues? Guided by a theoretical introduction by the editors, the 15 chapters deal with topics ranging from the scale of environmental problems, local agenda 21, infrastructural decisions, strategic planning, to environmental policy in developing countries.
