All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: Lack of parental involvement is one of the biggest challenges schools face. Due to lack of support or too much interference from the parent the academic learning process of the student is disturbed and delayed. This also puts a lot of stress on the teacher trying to support the student in achieving to the best of his or her abilities as well as managing the parents on the side. The purpose of this study was to investigate how 1) different parenting styles deliver different results and if that implies that there exists a more effective parenting style when it comes to school performance, 2) if we could make any correlations between school behaviour, motivation, results and how parents approach their children at home, and 3) to further explore how parenting style affects the academic performance of students in a local Hong Kong kindergarten. Therefore the aim was to explain the relationship between parenting styles, goal orientation and academic achievement in an Early Years Hong Kong school setting. This study identified the parenting styles prevalent in the kindergarten and explored which of the four parenting styles from Baumrind (1971) and Chao (1994) are being used by the kindergarten parents. It continued by identifying the academic achievement prevalent amoung the students and correlating it with their parent's parenting style. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used throughout this study. A group of 60 Kindergarten students were monitored through observation for a period of 6 months in order to track their academic achievement. A survey was sent home and completed by the 60 parents of these students collecting information on parenting style and socio-economic information. Finally both findings were correlated and significant similarities and connections were identified between both parenting style and academic achievement. The study found strong correlations between parenting styles and the performance of students in school especially concerning authoritative, authoritarian and training parenting styles. The results indicated students from authoritative parenting background scored significantly higher in academic achievement while students from authoritative and training background had low performance. There was no significant correlation found between goal orientation and parenting style or academic achievement. Book excerpt: Parenting style is one of the essential aspects influencing students’ academic performance, and this thesis focused on the effectiveness of authoritative and authoritarian parenting (Zahed et al., 2016). The choice of the parenting style employed in a household is the result of a myriad of other elements coming together. I studied the relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement in relation to students' ethnicity and socio-economic levels (SES). A survey was created to assess the preferred parenting style, ethnicity, academic outcomes, and the family’s SES. The study found two correlations. First, a negative correlations between the characteristics of authoritative style and authoritarian parenting (demandingness and responsiveness). Second, a positive correlation between ethnicity and socioeconomic level. Contrary to previous research, this sample showed a higher socioeconomic status for Non-White students. Results from 148 students showed no relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement as a function of ethnicity and SES. Even though, there was no significant relationship between the variables, all the ethnicities in the sample showed propensity towards an authoritative parenting style. These findings were corroborated by other studies that focused on college students to show no significant impact of parenting style on academic achievement. Higher education can be considered a factor that balances out the scales and provides equal opportunity for all.

The type of parenting style employed by parents, whether it is authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive, has and continues to be a major theme in these studies. One area of particular interest that has been overlooked in these studies, however, is the influence that parents may have on a student's learning autonomy. Learning autonomy is the idea that a student has internal motivation to learn or achieve. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among the three styles of parenting, learning autonomy, perceived parental autonomy support, and scholastic achievement in undergraduate college students. Sixty-one participants were recruited at a small liberal arts college in the northeastern United States to complete questionnaires, which measured perceived parental authority of the participants' parents, perceived parental autonomy support, and students' own learning autonomy. The participants were also asked to list their grade point average. The results revealed positive and negative correlations between many of the variables in the study; however, simple regression analyses did not yield any statistically significant relationships between parental authority, learning autonomy, perceived autonomy support, and scholastic achievement.

Book excerpt: The study of the relationship between parenting and child development has been of paramount interest to psychologists for decades (Hart, Olsen, Robinson, & Mandelco, 1997). Although the link between parenting style and academic achievement has been well established in regard to children and adolescents, the literature concerning young adults, of the university-aged population, is limited (Cutrona, Cole, Colangelo, Assouline, & Russell, 1994). By examining the relation of parenting style to academic achievement in young adults, and concerning both maternal and paternal parenting styles, the present study attempted to determine if Baumrind’s (1971) typology of parenting styles can be extended to include young adults. After surveying 397 university students, findings revealed that correlations between parenting style and academic achievement in young adults were insignificant. Further, although multiple regression analyses revealed that parenting style significantly contributed to the prediction of academic achievement, relatively low estimates of the proportion of variance accounted for by the regression suggest that such a contribution and difference between those who live with their parents and those who do not are barely noteworthy. Implications concerning the latent effects of parenting on academic achievement are presented; however, as the results of the present study are inconsistent with previous findings concerning children and adolescents (Baumrind, 1968; Dornbusch, Ritter, Liederman, Roberts, & Fraleigh, 1987; Slicker, 1998), limitations and methodological issues are discussed, as well as recommendations for future research.
