Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. They wonder what Chinese parents do to produce so many math whizzes and music prodigies, what it's like inside the family, and whether they could do it too. Well, I can tell them, because I've done it... Amy Chua's daughters, Sophia and Louisa (Lulu) were polite, interesting and helpful, they had perfect school marks and exceptional musical abilities. The Chinese-parenting model certainly seemed to produce results. But what happens when you do not tolerate disobedience and are confronted by a screaming child who would sooner freeze outside in the cold than be forced to play the piano? Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is a story about a mother, two daughters, and two dogs. It was supposed to be a story of how Chinese parents are better at raising kids than Western ones. But instead, it's about a bitter clash of cultures, a fleeting taste of glory, and how you can be humbled by a thirteen-year-old. Witty, entertaining and provocative, this is a unique and important book that will transform your perspective of parenting forever.

Book excerpt: The relationship of parental authority to the self-esteem of 384 college students was studied using Stanley Coopersmith's 1967 Self Esteem Inventory and John Buri's 1991 Parental Authority Questionnaire through Qualtrics, an on-line survey software program. The researcher conducted a quantitative data analysis process utilizing univariate and bivariate analyses. Authoritarianism and authoritativeness of parents were examined using the parenting schema developed by Diana Baumrind and were found to correlate significantly with self-esteem of college students at a Central California public university. Individuals who were raised by parents with an authoritative parenting style had higher levels of self-esteem than individuals who were raised by parents with an authoritarian or permissive style. Further, this study found that individuals raised in two-parent households experienced authoritarian parenting more than those who were raised in single-parent households. The data also revealed that the student body as a whole had low levels of self-esteem. This study informs social workers of the impact of three styles of parenting as they relate to self-esteem of young adults in college, as well as allows professionals to reevaluate their assumptions on optimal parenting styles.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A substantial body of research has been accumulated on predictors of general risk-taking. The current study hypothesizes relationships between parenting style (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive indulgent, or permissive indifferent), self-esteem and positive or negative risk-taking behaviors of college students. Students (n=113) from a small Midwestern college completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), the Child Report of Parent Behavior Inventory (CRPBI), and the Positive and Negative Risk-Taking Questionnaire (PNRTQ). For all students, parental acceptance was positively correlated to self-esteem and firm control was negatively correlated to self-esteem. For male students, father firm control is also related to lower levels of negative risk-taking. These findings suggest that the parent-child relationship is indicative of child self-esteem and, in the father-son relationship, predicts negative risk-taking. Parenting techniques are related to self-esteem, indicating that parents should be aware of their styles of interaction with their children and examine the motivations behind their use of acceptance and firm control. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed"--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychologist Diana Baumrind's revolutionary prototype of parenting, called authoritative parenting, combines the best of various parenting styles. In contrast to previously advocated styles involving high responsiveness and low demandingness (i.e., permissive parenting) or low responsiveness and high demandingness (i.e., authoritarian parenting), authoritative parenting involves high levels of both responsiveness and demandingness. The result is an appropriate mix of warm nurturance and firm discipline. Decades of research have supported the prototype, and we now know that authoritative parenting fosters high achievement, emotional adjustment, self-reliance, and social confidence in children and adolescents. In this book, leading scholars update our thinking about authoritative parenting and address three unresolved issues: mechanisms of the style's effectiveness, variations of effectiveness across cultures, and untangling how parents influence children from how children influence them. By integrating perspectives from developmental and clinical psychology, the book will inform prevention and intervention efforts to help parents maximise their children's potential.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.
