Book excerpt: This volume takes an international and multidisciplinary approach to understanding students’ academic achievement. It does so by integrating educational literature with developmental psychology and family studies perspectives. Each of the nine chapters focuses on a particular country: China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, or the United States. It describes the country as a cultural context, examines the current school system and parenting in light of the school system, and provides empirical evidence from that country regarding links between parenting and students’ academic achievement. The book highlights similarities and differences in education and parenting across these nine countries - all varying widely in socioeconomic and cultural factors that affect schools and families. The volume contributes to greater understanding of links between parenting and academic performance in different cultural groups. It sheds light on how school systems and parenting are embedded in larger cultural settings that have implications for students’ educational experiences and academic achievement. As two of the most important contexts in which children and adolescents spend time, understanding how schools and families jointly contribute to academic achievement holds promise for advancing the international agenda of promoting quality education for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the relationship between parenting and child development has been of paramount interest to psychologists for decades (Hart, Olsen, Robinson, & Mandelco, 1997). Although the link between parenting style and academic achievement has been well established in regard to children and adolescents, the literature concerning young adults, of the university-aged population, is limited (Cutrona, Cole, Colangelo, Assouline, & Russell, 1994). By examining the relation of parenting style to academic achievement in young adults, and concerning both maternal and paternal parenting styles, the present study attempted to determine if Baumrind’s (1971) typology of parenting styles can be extended to include young adults. After surveying 397 university students, findings revealed that correlations between parenting style and academic achievement in young adults were insignificant. Further, although multiple regression analyses revealed that parenting style significantly contributed to the prediction of academic achievement, relatively low estimates of the proportion of variance accounted for by the regression suggest that such a contribution and difference between those who live with their parents and those who do not are barely noteworthy. Implications concerning the latent effects of parenting on academic achievement are presented; however, as the results of the present study are inconsistent with previous findings concerning children and adolescents (Baumrind, 1968; Dornbusch, Ritter, Liederman, Roberts, & Fraleigh, 1987; Slicker, 1998), limitations and methodological issues are discussed, as well as recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: Throughout the years, the role that parents play with regard to a child's academic achievement has been the source of considerable research. The type of parenting style employed by parents, whether it is authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive, has and continues to be a major theme in these studies. One area of particular interest that has been overlooked in these studies, however, is the influence that parents may have on a student's learning autonomy. Learning autonomy is the idea that a student has internal motivation to learn or achieve. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among the three styles of parenting, learning autonomy, perceived parental autonomy support, and scholastic achievement in undergraduate college students. Sixty-one participants were recruited at a small liberal arts college in the northeastern United States to complete questionnaires, which measured perceived parental authority of the participants' parents, perceived parental autonomy support, and students' own learning autonomy. The participants were also asked to list their grade point average. The results revealed positive and negative correlations between many of the variables in the study; however, simple regression analyses did not yield any statistically significant relationships between parental authority, learning autonomy, perceived autonomy support, and scholastic achievement.

Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION Ethiopia is considered to be one of the oldest civilizations and oldest country in the word. It is also one of the largest countries in Africa; the second most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa next to Nigeria; the third on the African continent and 14th in the world (Mohajan, 20013; Adejumobi, 2007). However, it is now recorded as one of the poorest countries in the world and is beset by multifaceted social, economic, and political problems, with poverty the most serious (Gota, 2012). In this 21st century, it can be easily observed that a number of societal changes, such as people's way of living, their learning and working, advancement in science and technology are taking place. With this regard, youth and adolescents have a great responsibility in alleviating these multidimensional problems of this poor country, if they are provided with quality of education (Demewez et al., 2 005). Because, in this era of knowledge, information and communication, it is highly believed that the attainment of the highest standards of education is fundamental to the dynamic development of science and technology, which, in turn, has significant impact on the cultural, socio-economic, and political development of any nation. To this end, the function of quality education is paramount (Gota, 2012). However, now-a-days, Ethiopian school adolescents are facing many challenges, of which poor quality of education is the most serious and persistent problem manifested by less academic engagement, low achievement motivation and poor school achievement (Gota, 2012). According to some local researchers such as Tsige (2006); Aboma (2009); Mezgebo (2008); Yalew (2003); Adem (2005); Demewez et al., 2005), poor quality of education finally leads to subsequent academic failure and dropout of students. There are several contributing factors identified by researchers. For instance, Daniel (1992); Girma (1999); Mulgeta (1998); Tesfaye (2007) and Dehyadegary et al., (2012); Anderman & Anderman (2011) have identified that achievement motivation and academic engagement are factors that highly related to performances of adolescent students in the school. On the other hand, a number of studies for instance, Abesha (1997); Besharat et al., (2011); Yiqoyealem (2005); Adem (2005); Yalew (2005); Shyny (2017); Adema K. (2005) suggested that parents have a huge impact on adolescents' life in general and on achievement motivation and academic engagement in particular. More,
