Book excerpt: Many policymakers seek to improve mathematics proficiency and to reduce achievement gaps across ethnic groups in the United States. This study examines the relationship between parental involvement, self-efficacy, and mathematics achievement in middle school within a multiethnic school district in the United States Midwest region. A total of 454 students participated in a survey over the course of a school year. The survey was meant to investigate the interaction and perceptions of parental involvement, self-efficacy, and school achievement within the school's system across the various ethnic groups. I used Pearson correlations to analyze the data to determine if a statistically significant relationship exists between parental involvement and mathematics achievement, parental involvement and self-efficacy, and self-efficacy and mathematics achievement. Similarly, descriptive statistics and ANOVA were utilized to analyze student perceptions of these variables and differences across ethnic groups. Findings indicate that a significant relationship exists between parental involvement and self-efficacy. Similarly, a significant relationship exists between self-efficacy and mathematics achievement. However, no significant relationship exists between parental involvement and mathematics achievement. Results also showed that White students demonstrated the highest level of mathematics performance, while Black students demonstrated the least level of mathematics performance. Meanwhile, Black students showed the highest parental involvement perceptions while Multiethnic students expressed the lowest parental involvement perception. The students' perception of self-efficacy was low across the ethnic groups.

Book excerpt: There is emerging research that has been exploring how parents with math anxiety engage with their children, and the resulting impact on student math anxiety and performance in middle and high school grades. In response to the paradigm shift of increased parental involvement with home-based math support and home-schooling due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of this transference had become a concern to educators. This research looked at the effectiveness of a school outreach program to help mitigate the anxiety level of parents, help parents define their roles at home, and promote more effective parental involvement with the goal of better mathematical outcomes for students. Invitations were sent to 192 sixth-grade parents in a suburban Connecticut middle school to participate in a Family Math Night event with the stated purpose of addressing student success in middle school mathematics. Parents and their children completed pre- and post-surveys over a five-week period to monitor parents’ math anxiety levels in their role providing math support, students’ math anxiety levels, and students’ perceived frequency of parental support. Despite the relatively small parent sample size, there was a statistically significant reduction in parental anxiety levels in providing help and identifying their role in home-based math support at the end of the five-week investigation. Student results were inconclusive but may have benefitted from a longer observation period.

Book excerpt: The present study investigated whether both mathematics self efficacy and adolescents' educational motivation toward schooling mediate the relationship between different dimensions of parental involvement and mathematics achievement of tenth grade students. The two dimensions of parental involvement incorporated were parents' advice on adolescents' schooling and parent-school contact. A nationally representative sample from ELS: 2002 with 2002 base year data was utilized. The results of the study suggest that mathematics self efficacy fully mediated only the relationship between parents' advice on adolescent schooling and mathematics achievement. It was not a significant mediator of the relationship between parent school-contact and mathematics achievement. Adolescents' educational motivation toward schooling did not significantly mediate the relationship between mathematics achievement and either parent-school contact or parents' advice on adolescents' schooling. Different theoretical frameworks on parental involvement and recommendations for future studies are discussed.

The book examines how self-efficacy theory relates to the acquisition of mathematical competence. The text also provides specific and practical how-to strategies for both teachers and parents in applying these principles to classroom mathematics instruction and activities. The self-efficacy practices and applications to mathematics are also suitable for families working with learners outside the school environment. Acquiring mathematical skills requires more than knowing arithmetic tables, memorizing rules, and knowing proofs. It requires a basic belief that one is capable of obtaining this information, making sense of it, and applying and generalizing it in mathematical problems. In addition, a student must believe that obtaining these skills leads to a positive outcome, whether it is perceived to be a good or passing grade, comfort-level in tackling mathematical problems, being able to advance to the next mathematics course, being able to score highly on the math section of the SAT and/or be competitive for a desired job. The ability of students to achieve and exceed grade level competence in mathematics is addressed through the lens of Albert Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory. This theoretical position states that one will persist in mastering a behavior (in this case, mastering mathematical principles and skills), in the face of obstacles or failures—to the extent that one believes he or she has the ability to do so, and that there is a desired outcome for doing so. The research literature on the role of self-efficacy in mathematic instruction is examined to demonstrate the validity of using this concept to increase student (and parent/teacher) confidence in learning and applying grade-appropriate math content. Specific teaching methodologies will be provided that infuse self-efficacy strategies for students. Lastly, teachers and parents are provided strategies to increase their own self-efficacy when it comes to conveying mathematics principles to their child or student, as well as strategies to assess their students’ level of self-efficacy over time. Teaching and learning mathematics so that students achieve success at their grade level or above can present a variety of challenges. One barrier that affects learners is the belief that one is not capable of learning mathematics or not naturally talented in the field, not a “math person.” As a result, learners may not believe they are capable of a positive outcome for achieving mathematics success. This book is an important resource for pre-service and in-service teachers, as well as families in applying the theory of self-efficacy to support learners in becoming confident and assured in their ability to understand and apply mathematical principles and procedures. Coupled with classroom ready mathematics instructional strategies, the book provides readers with the background, tools and strategies needed to carry content success and confidence forward to remain persistent in solving all future mathematical problems.

The candidate explanatory variable Parental involvement (PI) is found statistically significantly contributing towards the outcome variable Students' score (SS); these results help us to accept hypothesis that there is a relationship between parental involvement and their children's academic achievement ( here students' score). The contributions of PI variable has decreased from c1 =107.251 (Step I) to c/1 = 92.875 (Step III); however, the value of latter c/1 has not become statistically insignificant, suggesting that, instead of complete mediation, there occurs partial mediation. Mediating variable self-efficacy (SE) itself is statistically significant, reinforcing that variable SE fulfills the condition of being a mediator, and meanwhile the contribution of PI variable is still statistically significant, SE variable is so partially mediating; these results help us to accept hypothesis that self-efficacy (SE) of the students plays mediating role between the Parental involvement and students' academic scores. Computations for direct and indirect mediation effects provide estimates of parental involvement exert 86.61 percent direct effect and 13.39 percent indirect (meditation) effect through mediator self-efficacy. Sobel test suggests that mediation effects of 13.39 percent are small but statistically significant.

Book excerpt: Parental home and school involvement at 10th grade of a nationally representative sample from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS: 2002) were analyzed to determine its impact on the math achievement of 12th graders from urban, public high school. The study aimed to replicate similar studies using middle school sample. The study also investigated whether parental involvement moderated the math achievement of Hispanic and African American students. Multiple regression was the method of analysis. Unlike studies with middle school students, there was no significant effect of parent-child discussion and parent's participation in school activities on 12th grade math achievement. Instead, for home involvement, rules about grades and homework were negatively associated with 12th grade math achievement which was consistent with previous findings. School involvement did not have any effect on 12th grade math achievement. This study also did not find parental involvement to be more beneficial to the math achievement of African American and Hispanic students than White students. This study concluded that parental home and school involvement might not be as pertinent to high school students as it was for middle school students.
