Book excerpt: Parental home and school involvement at 10th grade of a nationally representative sample from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS: 2002) were analyzed to determine its impact on the math achievement of 12th graders from urban, public high school. The study aimed to replicate similar studies using middle school sample. The study also investigated whether parental involvement moderated the math achievement of Hispanic and African American students. Multiple regression was the method of analysis. Unlike studies with middle school students, there was no significant effect of parent-child discussion and parent's participation in school activities on 12th grade math achievement. Instead, for home involvement, rules about grades and homework were negatively associated with 12th grade math achievement which was consistent with previous findings. School involvement did not have any effect on 12th grade math achievement. This study also did not find parental involvement to be more beneficial to the math achievement of African American and Hispanic students than White students. This study concluded that parental home and school involvement might not be as pertinent to high school students as it was for middle school students.

She found significant relationships between parenting skills and parental efficacy and student achievement in language arts and mathematics. As parenting skills and parental efficacy increased, the level of student achievement in both subject areas also increased. Social networking was also found to correlate with higher student achievement.

The Broken Compass puts this question to the test in the most thorough scientific investigation to date of how parents across socioeconomic and ethnic groups contribute to the academic performance of K-12 children. The study's surprising discovery is that no clear connection exists between parental involvement and improved student performance. Keith Robinson and Angel Harris assessed over sixty measures of parental participation, at home and in school. Some of the associations they found between socioeconomic status and educational involvement were consistent with past studies. Yet other results ran contrary to previous research and popular perceptions. It is not the case that Hispanic and African American parents are less concerned with education than other ethnic groups--or that "tiger parenting" among Asian Americans gets the desired results. In fact, many low-income parents across a wide spectrum want to be involved in their children's school lives, but they often receive little support from the school system. And for immigrant families, language barriers only worsen the problem. While Robinson and Harris do not wish to discourage parents' interest, they believe that the time has come to seriously reconsider whether greater parental involvement can make much of a dent in the basic problems facing their children's education today. Book excerpt: For the past 30 years, student performance in science and mathematics in the United States has remained at disappointing levels. In comparison to 20 other nations in advanced mathematics and physics, students in the United States scored significantly lower in advanced mathematics, and only one country scored lower in physics (NCES, 1997). In short, improving mathematics achievement among U.S. students is a long-standing issue. This study explored the features of a program that focused on increasing parental involvement in their children's mathematics education. It investigated what specific qualities of teacher-to-parent and school-to-parent involvement accompany a program that successfully involved parents. In addition, other aspects that involved parents successfully in their children's mathematics education were identified. Using qualitative methods to collect and analyze data, parents, teachers, and administrators in one of the 25 largest school districts in the country who participated in this program were interviewed. From this data, the researcher concluded that the instructional program actively engaged parents; enhanced parent and teacher relationships; increased the range of options for parents to communicate with teachers and enhanced the ease and comfort of their communication. Parents indicated that the program was relevant to their concerns, focused on helping them improve the academic achievement of their children, and provided a substantive amount of parent-teacher contact. The program quality and the knowledge parents gained about algebra empowered them to become more involved in their child's learning. In doing so it ultimately improved parent-child relationships as they related to mathematics and school in general. Participation in the program led to parents gaining confidence due to a better understanding on how mathematics should be taught to their children. This study indicates that much work must continue to occur to educate parents about new educational practices and also inform educators about their responsibility to connect with parents regarding curriculum and instruction. The challenge has three dimensions. While schools and teachers need to provide access to such initiatives, parents, in turn, need to avail themselves to the opportunities offered. On the third level, students must not be forgotten in the planning and implementation of parental outreach initiatives.

Book excerpt: This study explores the relationship between the level and the growth of students' mathematics performance and parents, teacher, and peers social support during the middle and high school years. We used the data set of Longitudinal Study of American Youth (LSAY) to do a latent class analysis (LCA) combined with a growth modeling. We identified distinct classification of social support students receive and decided to choose four latent classes consisting of the subgroups: no support, teacher support, double support from parents and peers, and full support from parents, teachers and peers. The results indicate that the female students are less likely to get teacher support and the full support at grade 7. Also, the findings suggest students with more educated parents are more likely to be classified into subgroups in which the parents support is. Compared to other groups (the 'teacher support' group, the 'double support' group, and the 'full support' group), students with no support at grade 7 have a lower level of mathematics performance. Subsequently, those students have a lower growth rate of mathematics scores in the next five years, even after controlling the covariates like gender, race, the level of parents' education, and parents' occupation. The impact on mathematics performance and its growth differs by different patterns of social support. Our findings underscore that differential exposure to social support in middle school years plays a significant role on students' future mathematics achievement.
