Book excerpt: This study determined the difference in the level of academic potential/achievement across five populations of freshmen during an academic school year at Iowa State University. It examined students whose parents' highest education was: 1) high school diploma, (2) one or two years of college, (3) two-year associate or technical degree, (4) four-year degree, and (5) graduate or professional degree. Other factors that might impinge on student academic achievement are: poverty, socioeconomic status, and family structure/or marital status. The study investigated whether students whose parents attained higher levels of education beyond the high school diploma were more successful academically than students whose parents did not. Eleven factors were used to analyze the relationship between parent educational level, and student academic achievement and performance. The findings of the study indicated that parent educational level, family structure/marital status, and income range have a positive influence on their student's academic potential and achievement. Students whose parents had higher educational levels performed higher on standardized tests than parents with lower educational levels. The results from this research showed that socioeconomic factors weigh heavily on the potential and academic achievement of first-time freshmen at Iowa State University.

Book excerpt: Research shows that First Generation College Students (FGCS) have lower rates of college degree attainment than their continuing generation peers. Many of these students face challenges navigating social, academic, financial, and administrative domains when working toward a post-secondary degree. Academic self-efficacy (ASE) is an important predictor of academic success in college. Research suggests that parents can influence ASE through parent academic socialization (PAS), which includes academic expectations set by the parents (PAE), parent academic advice (PAA), and parental attitudes about education (PEA). The current study sought to examine the influence of PAS on ASE in FGCS and its subsequent effect on academic success. Responses were collected from over 250 FGCS at two universities in California using an online survey. It was hypothesized that PAS would predict GPA and that ASE would mediate this relationship. The mediation analyses were not significant. However, PAE as well as ASE did significantly predict GPA. PAA and PEA predicted ASE, which is promising for improving academic outcomes among FGCS. Future studies in this area could benefit from using a longitudinal research design and the literature as a whole could benefit from using more common methods of measurement across studies. Future research in this area has the potential to expand understanding of how parent factors may impact college student success and to inform parent-based interventions for supporting academic achievement.

These students faced many barriers to their academic success as they transitioned to college including limited support from family members. This qualitative study utilized a phenomenological approach to understand what role, if any, the support of parents and family helped first-generation students to persist in their academics during the first year of college. Six sophomore first-generation college students from a private Catholic institution in an urban setting in the Midwest were interviewed for the study along with six of their family members. The sophomore first-generation students reflected on their experiences during the first year of college. Participants discussed how they perceived and understood family support in their home life, the relationships between students and parents, and the way students interacted with their peers. Three findings emerged from the research: (1) the support provided by parents was instrumental in helping first-generation college students persist during their first year in school, (2) students and parents understood the college experience from different points of views, resulting in family tension and a "push and pull" dynamic that fostered an educational resilience among the students, (3) parents were more able to support students with financial resources and emotional encouragement and less able to address mental health issues. These findings showed the need for parental programming to support the educational experiences of first-generation college students and mechanisms to help parents become aware of the mental health challenges of students.

Book excerpt: The first paper employs mediation analyses to determine whether student sense of school belonging mediates the association between parent educational level and academic performance. The sample included Native American adolescents (N = 215) whose parents espoused various educational levels. Student sense of school belonging was assessed using the Psychological Sense of School Membership (PSSM; Goodenow, 1993) scale. Student sense of school belonging mediated the association between parent educational level and student academic motivation, a common proxy for academic performance. Implications include illuminating possible indirect associations between parental educational level and academic performance that includes student sense of school belonging as an important factor. The second paper explores whether ethnic racial identity affiliation can serve as a moderator influencing the association between FLI student status and student sense of school belonging. The sample included college students (N = 251) of various ethnic and racial identities enrolled in an elite four-year university in the western United States. Student sense of school belonging was assessed using a cultural mismatch measure. Ethnic racial identity affiliation was assessed using the Multi-Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM; Phinney, 1992). There was a significant association between FLI student status and sense of belonging, with ethnic racial identity affiliation serving as a protective moderator for FLI students. FLI students indicated lower levels of belonging (i.e., cultural match) than their non-FLI peers. However, this association between FLI students and belonging was weaker for FLI students who were strongly affiliated with their ethnic racial identity than FLI students who were not strongly affiliated with their ethnic racial identity. Implications include conceptualizing ethnic racial identity affiliation as a protective mechanism for underrepresented students that can protect against threats to student sense of school belonging. Moreover, understanding how ethnic racial identity and sense of belonging function together adds to scholarly knowledge of the indirect paths to academic performance. The third paper utilizes statistical techniques to explore two-occasion interindividual difference in change in belonging levels across time using a longitudinal sample of AI/AN students (N = 69) enrolled in a Native American reservation high school . First, this study analyzes whether student sense of school belonging levels change over time. Second, this study explores whether a student's school grade level moderates student sense of school belonging growth rates. Sense of school belonging was measured via the PSSM scale at both time one (when students were either freshmen or sophomores) and at time two (when students were either juniors or seniors). Student sense of school belonging increased over time. Although there was a larger increase in student sense of school belonging among students who were freshmen at time one versus students who were sophomores at time one, this belonging growth was not significant. Implications include further exploring fluctuations in student sense of school belonging over time, rather than considering the phenomenon a static construct. Together, these papers place special emphasis on possible mechanisms through which parent educational level is associated with student academic performance (i.e., sense of belonging and ethnic racial identity affiliation). Through this dissertation, I hope to highlight the need for more rigorous exploration of sociocultural and psychological variables that could be indirect pathways between seemingly direct associations (e.g., association between parent educational level and academic performance).
