Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationship between second grade students’ oral reading fluency scores as an indicator of reading comprehension achievement. A correlational design was used with a sample of 302 students from three South Carolina Title I schools. The students’ oral reading fluency (DORF) and overall, informational, and literary comprehension scores (MAP) were recorded. The researcher completed three bivariate linear regression analyses to determine if overall, informational, and literary comprehension could be predicted by students’ oral reading fluency rates. The researcher found that that there is a significant predictive relationship between the predictor and criterion variables. The statistical method used concluded a predicative relationship between oral reading fluency and overall reading comprehension, informational comprehension, and literary comprehension (p.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative correlational research study was to determine the relationship between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension of thirty fourth grade students enrolled at a southwest Georgia Reading First School. Data were collected using the spring 2008 Grade 4 Reading Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) and the 2007-2008 System to Enhance Educational Performance (STEEP) oral reading fluency assessments. The Pearson r was used to analyze the data. The .05 level of significance was accepted. The results showed a significant correlation between the reading CRCT scores and the corresponding oral reading fluency STEEP scores for these students. The findings indicated that students who read fluently comprehend better and they perform better on state-mandated tests.

Book excerpt: With increasing emphasis being placed on teachers to show an improvement in student achievement, schools are relying on indicators such as reading fluency and reading comprehension to gauge student progress throughout the year. Since the growth on these assessments are used in calculating teachers and administrators' yearly job evaluations, the significance of these measures has never been higher. Teachers and administrators want to know if the time spent on measures such as reading fluency is worth the sacrifice in the instructional day, when this time could be spent on teaching state mandated standards. The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental correlational study was to examine the relationship of reading fluency, the predictor variable, and reading comprehension, the criterion variable, among third, fourth, and fifth grade students from a rural, Title 1 school district in southwest Georgia. A Pearson product moment correlation was used to answer the following research question: Is there a relationship between a third, fourth, or fifth grade student's oral reading fluency score, as measured by Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, and their reading comprehension score, as measured by Scholastic Reading Inventory? The results of this study have determined a strong positive correlation exists between reading fluency and reading comprehension in grades three, four, and five. The inclusion of Lexile as the measure for reading comprehension did not diminish the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension. Further research is needed using Lexile as the measure for reading comprehension to broaden the generalization of this study.

Book excerpt: If DIBELS [Dynamic indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills] oral reading fluency (ORF) is found to predict student achievement on the Integrated Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (iLEAP), then having this data is critical to identifying and meeting the needs of struggling readers. . . . The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension. Additionally, the study explored the relationship between student performance on DIBELS-ORF and its prediction of student performance in reading comprehension as measured by the iLEAP. Moreover, this study examined socioeconomic status (SES) as a factor influencing reading subscores of reading achievement. The data were obtained from 15 elementary schools (seven Title I schools and eight non-Title I schools) in a North Louisiana school district. A total of 1,094 participants were administered the . . . DIBELS diagnostic screener and the . . . iLEAP in fall 2008 and spring 2009. . . . Results showed a significant relationship between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension. Also, it was determined that DIBELS-ORF is a statistically significant predictor of student performance of iLEAP reading subscores. This study provided evidence that DIBELS-ORF is a reliable diagnostic tool that educators can use to assist in planning and implementing prescriptive interventions to address weaknesses of students with reading deficiencies. Further implications for practice as well as recommendations for future research are discussed. -Author

Book excerpt: Early identification of children with reading problems is a vital element of academic success at all grade levels. Thus, it is crucial that educators select and implement efficient reading assessments and procedures. The purpose of this study was to investigate third grade archival data of students over a 2-year period at one school to determine if a relationship existed between the DIBELS 3rd grade oral reading fluency scores and the reading scores on Stanford Achievement Test and the reading scores on the Alabama Reading and Math Test. Archival data from 80 third grade African American students who were assessed with all three assessments was used to conduct this study. Pearson and Spearman statistical tests were performed on the data to examine the relationship between DIBELS (oral reading fluency) and the reading section of the Stanford Achievement Test and the reading section of the Alabama Reading and Math Test. The results indicated a relationship existed between DIBELS oral reading fluency scores and the reading scores on Stanford Achievement Test and the reading scores on the Alabama Reading and Math Test during the 2009-2010 school years.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension by measuring both constructs using grade-level academic text, and to determine the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension when reading fluency performance was examined at the quantile level. Six hundred and five second and third grade students in a Mountain West state participated in this study and were assessed on their reading fluency and reading comprehension abilities using the Narrative Language Measures: Reading (NLM:R), a subtest of the CUBED, which measures reading fluency through a timed reading task and reading comprehension through a narrative retell task. This assessment is based on grade-level, academic text which is aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) (Petersen & Spencer, 2016). As prior research has demonstrated (Reese, Suggate, Long & Schaughency, 2010; Shapiro, Fritschmann, Thomas, Hughes, & McDougal, 2014), this study found a weak relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension when reading comprehension was assessed using a narrative retell task. When the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension was examined at every 10th percentile of fluency performance, reading fluency and reading comprehension demonstrated a tenuous relationship. The differences between reading comprehension performance at the 10th percentile of reading fluency and all other percentiles were not significant. The results of this study suggest that curriculum based measures for oral reading (CBM-Rs) may not be an appropriate indirect measure for grade-level reading comprehension.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, casual-comparative study was to determine if there is a difference in reading fluency scores among students in grades kindergarten through second grade using the Istation reading program. The importance of the study focused on the link between student’s oral reading fluency and overall reading comprehension. This study focused on approximately 3,000 kindergarten through second grade students from a total of nine elementary schools in central North Carolina. Three schools were located in a rural area of the community, three from an urban area and three from a suburban area. The data from students beginning of year Istation scores and middle of year Istation scores were analyzed using an ANCOVA statistical comparison. The results for the first hypothesis showed that there was a significant difference between the rural group and suburban group and the rural group and urban group. However, there was not a significant difference between the urban and suburban groups. The results for the second hypothesis showed there was a significant difference between the rural group and suburban group and the rural group and urban group. However, there was not a significant difference between the urban and suburban groups. For the third and final hypothesis the null hypothesis was accepted. The conclusion from the study showed there to be a significant difference between a student’s school location and testing scores. Further recommendations include additional studies that could be conducted centering around comparing students’ mid-year scores to their end of year scores as well as locations in other areas of the United States to determine any correlations.
