Book excerpt: However, among the low-income African American girls in the sample, there was a significant correlation between having a television in the bedroom and types of television shows watched. This suggests that low-income African American adolescent girls may have poor media utilization habits that could include influence their socio-emotional development and academic achievement. Recommendations for counselors suggest this information can be used to intervene with adolescent girls, parents, and teachers about healthier media habits for youth.
