Book excerpt: The threefold purpose of this research study was: (a) to measure and compare the leadership styles of elementary school administrators in adequate performance schools in North Carolina with those in exemplary schools in North Carolina; (b) to measure and compare the personality types of elementary school elementary school administrators in adequate performance schools in North Carolina with those in exemplary schools in North Carolina; (c) to explore possible relationships among the four leadership styles and adaptability scores identified by the Leadership Effectiveness and Adaptability Description Instrument, the 16 groups of personality types as identified by the Myers-Briggs Type, Form M, and specified administrator demographic variables of elementary school administrator in North Carolina. Data on the leadership styles and personality types were obtained from a research sample of 130 elementary school administrators within the Central and Southeast Regions of North Carolina. Administrators were randomly selected based on individual school performances on the North Carolina End-of-Grade Test. Participants in this study were asked to answer the 93 items on the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator, Form M (MBTI); respond to 12 situations compiled on the Leadership Effectiveness and Adaptability Descriptions Instrument (LEAD-Self); and complete a Biographical Data Sheet for Principals. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive statistics provided a profile of the principals and their schools. Inferential statistical procedures were used to test the five research questions and three hypotheses. The administrators from the two school categories did not differ significantly on three of the four styles of leadership. A significant relationship was identified between the administrators from adequate performance and exemplary schools on Participating Leadership Style (S3). A statistical relationship between personality types and school categories was not identified; however, the introverted, sensing, thinking, and judging (INTJ) personality type was identified by more administrators. Two reliable and interpretable components were identified among the 12 variables examined through factor analysis.

Book excerpt: Multiple Regression was used to examine the relationship between the principal's leadership styles (Independent Variable) and growth in the Performance Index (Dependent Variable). The 19 principals' dominant leadership style was transformational leadership. The regression model failed to be significant; therefore, based on the data, leadership as measured by the MLQ-5X is not a good predictor for growth. The relationship on school leadership and growth was not significantly substantial. Although there was no predictive relationship, the data verify that the 19 schools that have shown growth had transformational leaders. Future research suggests a larger sample size to determine if leadership styles have a relationship to student growth.

Book excerpt: This study utilized the descriptive and quantitative approaches to examine elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district. Research supports the relationship of leadership styles, school climate and student achievement does exist and this study identified and explored how it exists between the school principals' leadership style and school climate. Participants consisted of elementary principals and teachers in an urban school district within the southeastern region of the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of a relationship between elementary school principals' leadership styles and school climate in an urban school district. Survey instruments were the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) Form XII Self and the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire for elementary schools (OCDQ-RE). Demographic information was gathered from the principals and teachers that were subjects of this research (Table 3 and Appendix C). The following research question was posed: Does a relationship exist between the elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district? Descriptive statistics summarized the data characteristics of the independent variable (principal leadership style) and dependent variable (school climate). The data was analyzed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. A Positive linear relationship in climate was found for three different groups. These three groups had a statistically significant correlations coefficient and p-values between the LBDQ-Form XII Self and OCDQ-RE subscales. The school principals must be able to access and evaluate the impact they may have on the climate of the school. This study proposed strategies school principals from the participating school district can use to create a more open school climate.

Book excerpt: Teachers are leaving the field of education at a greater rate than professionals in other fields. Teacher attrition rates in the United States are high, with almost 40% of new teachers leaving the field within their first five years (Rinke, 2011). Many teachers’ response to feeling unsupported and unvalued is to change schools or districts or quit the teaching profession. If teacher effectiveness is a top priority of the education reform movement, then pinpointing why teachers are leaving the classroom must likewise be a top priority. It is not known whether or to what degree a principal’s personality style promotes or reduces teacher retention. The purpose of this research study is to investigate and analyze whether there is a correlation between a principal’s personality style and the retention rates of teachers in urban districts. A mixed-method research approach was used to gain insight into why some schools are able to retain teachers and whether this retention is connected to the leadership styles of principals that promote or reduce teacher retention. This study includes survey answers anonymously submitted by a group of 96 schoolteachers. Participants were recruited via the We_ Educate Instagram Forum, the Black Doctoral Network forum, and the Facebook group Black Doctoral Network Inc (BlackPhDNetwork). Participants completed a survey comprised of 22 questions. The first four provided demographic information on the respondents including age, ethnicity, grade currently teaching, how long in the profession, and type of school. The remaining 17 questions assessed their views on their school, their job satisfaction, their opportunities for professional growth, their school leadership, and related issues. To determine their leadership styles, 15 elementary school principals completed a DiSC assessment to determine each participant’s personality styles and behavior styles. After the assessment, they were asked follow-up questions about their leadership styles. Five trends emerged from the data given by principals and teachers: 1. Building relationships; 2. Trust; 3. Communication; 4. Collaboration; and 5. Support. These trends are important when it comes to teacher commitment. Collaboration between school leaders and teachers would promote a more homogeneous school culture characterized by purpose and not just by merit. School leaders and school employees would work together to achieve a common vision. Results further indicated that a principal plays an important role in ensuring that teachers are provided with support. Therefore, it is essential that principals should be responsible for orchestrating the support that teachers need within the school.

Book excerpt: Research has shown that various leadership styles have different impacts on leader outcomes such as satisfaction, extra effort, and effectiveness. Specifically, researchers have found that transformational leadership positively impacts follower perceptions of satisfaction, extra effort, and leader effectiveness (Avolio, Bass, & lung, 1995; Philbin, 1997; Yammarino, Spangler, & Bass, 1993). However, research has shown that not all leaders display transformational leadership. In fact, Eagly, Karau, & lohnson (1992) and their colleagues have shown transformational leadership in education to be linked to the extent to which male and female principals carry out their gender roles - referring to role congruity. Currently, not much is known empirically about the relationship between the role of the elementary school principal leadership and gender roles and its combined effects on teachers' perceived satisfaction, perceived effectiveness of their principals, and their assessment of extra effort put forth towards their job. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between leadership style (transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire) and psychological gender role group (masculine, feminine, undifferentiated, androgynous) of elementary school principals. Exploration of this topic filled a void in empirical investigations of the psychological gender perspective of school leadership. Multivariate Analysis of Variance techniques were used to examine the relationships between and among principal psychological gender role, biological gender, principal effectiveness, teacher satisfaction, and teacher extra effort. Additionally, canonical correlation was used to examine the relationship between leadership factor variable set and psychological gender role variable set. Results detected one relationship exists between psychological gender role and leadership behavior variable sets. Specifically, findings suggest femininity, masculinity, idealized influence attribute, idealized influence behavior, inspiration-motivation, intellection stimulation, individual consideration, contingent reward, and laissez-faire provide the best linear combinations of Pearson correlations between the leadership behavior and psychological gender role variable sets. In addition, results indicated statistically significant differences in perceived principal effectiveness, teacher perceived satisfaction, and teacher extra effort based on teacher perceived level of principal psychological gender. Teachers who perceived their principals as androgynous and feminine reported higher levels of extra effort, satisfaction, and principal effectiveness. Leadership behavior did not appear to have a significant influence on extra effort, satisfaction, and principal effectiveness. Additionally, the interaction effect between perceived principal psychological gender role group and principal biological gender was not statistically significant.
