Book excerpt: The state of discourse in schools has been elevated as educators seek solutions to societal challenges that have led to educational inequity and failing schools. Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) has become a formidable solution but studies of this construct in schools is relatively new. Recent research has led to the view and operationalization of OCBs as an attribute of discretionary helping behavior that enhances the productivity of schools. This qualitative case study explored OCBs in educators and this influence on school culture and organizational effectiveness. Eleven teaching and non-teaching staff members in an urban faith-based private school participated in in-depth interviews. A thematic analysis was selected to analyze and code data gathered from the interviews. Results indicated that both teaching and non-teaching staff display OCBs and these behaviors positively influence school culture and organizational effectiveness. Implications for practice include the need for districts to provide insight into OCBs in schools, an analysis of schools and job descriptions to discern OCBs from role expectations, and suggestions for educators. The recommendations for future research studies advocate for the ongoing search for antecedents and characteristics leading to OCB in schools. This literature would allow schools to develop systems that enable OCBs and encourages educators to display them in schools.

School leaders must mold the culture of the school in order to create an environment which is conducive to learning. Studies on school leadership and student achievement have highlighted the evidence of school leadership behaviors which contribute to student achievement. The purpose of this investigation studied the extent of school leadership behaviors and or characteristics that contribute to student achievement. This study was designed to identify the relationship between the behaviors of the school leader and student achievement. The study determined if teachers and principals perceptions of leadership behaviors contribute to student achievement. More specifically, this investigation was designed to study the behaviors and practices of elementary principals as it relates to student achievement in elementary school students in a large urban school district. Sixty-three elementary teachers and six principals were selected for this study. The six principals were apart of the focus group interview. Data was collected through teacher and principal surveys, audio-taped interviews and transcriptions. SPSS 13.0 was selected as a means to interpret and analyze data. 2 The results of the study support the literature and indicate that principal leadership is critical to student achievement in elementary school students. More specifically, it raised the question about what specific leadership behaviors are used to increase student achievement. This study further clarified that the principal is the primary person for instituting leadership among all within the school which ultimately contribute to student success. The elementary principal has a demanding and challenging job in and of itself, but by recognizing the leadership behaviors, the principal can influence the climate, productivity, effectiveness of their school and ultimately student achievement.

Especially in higher education, leadership styles are constantly being analyzed, researched, and developed to train leaders on the best style to use in order to be successful within their organizations (Eddy & VanDerLinden, 2006). Leaders seek answers on what they can do to build organizational culture and trust to create a successful work environment, especially during a time when it seems nothing else is working. Statement of the Problem This qualitative study explored how leadership behaviors may have an impact on organizational culture and organizational trust. If organizational culture and leadership styles impact employee performance, leaders should closely examine their behaviors related to organizational success. Specifically, this study addressed the following research questions: 1. How do employees define a Culture of Trust? 2. What specific leader behaviors positively/negatively influenced a Culture of Trust? 3. Describe the organizational culture within the school and its importance when leadership shares their vision with employees. Methodology This study solicited experiences of six employees within a graduate-level school who were impacted by leader behaviors. The data were based on participants' responses from open-ended questions in the areas of organizational culture, leadership styles, and organizational trust. One-on-one interviews were conducted for up to one hour with each participant. Each participant was asked nine open-ended questions. Interviews were subject to content analysis to identify common themes. The study used a qualitative method to conduct research on specific leader behaviors and the impact on a Culture of Trust at a graduate-level school. This study focused on the experiences of those career employees directly influenced, positively or negatively, by leader behaviors at the institution. Conclusions and Recommendations This study concluded that leader behaviors have a tremendous impact on a Culture of Trust within higher education. The results of this study can be shared and used by leaders and employees within higher education to better understand the collective vision needed for any organization to be successful. It is through a better understanding of the organizational culture that credibility and trust are built and maintained, which lead to organizational success.
