This study examines several factors relating to the use of computers in the classroom by teachers. The factors examined include teacher attitudes, emotions, beliefs, and outside influences. This was done by a review of the present literature, administering two surveys, and analyzing the survey data. Questionnaires were distributed to faculty at five randomly selected high schools in a Midwest city participating in the study. Data from the survey was then examined to determine which factors correlate with teacher computer use in the classroom. The results of this study will help improve understanding of teachers' instructional computer use.

Book excerpt: Although U.S. public schools now boast an average of one computer to every 3.8 students, the statistics show that many teachers are not taking advantage of this technology to maximize student learning. While schools continue to invest millions in new computer technology, national research reports recommend improved professional development for teachers on integrating computers into curriculum. The purpose of this study was to identify differences between teachers who frequently integrate computers into curricular instruction and teachers who do not, in terms of how teachers believe students can use computers, the value that they believe computers can add to student learning, and the barriers that they perceive prevent them from integrating technology. A mixed methods study involving 106 third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers from a diverse school district in Orange County was used to gather data about teachers' beliefs and perceptions regarding student use of computers. Findings indicate significant differences between teachers who frequently integrate computers and other teachers, particularly in the values that they attribute to student use of computers and how they manage the school day to incorporate time for computer activities. The findings also show that perceived barriers to computer integration are similar for teachers who frequently integrate computers and those who do not. Implications include redesigning teacher professional development in technology to help teachers develop a vision of how integrated technology can look in the classroom and how it can benefit student learning.

Based on international research, the authors argue that teacher effectiveness is too narrowly conceptualised and methods of measuring it are not attuned to the real contexts in which teachers work. They propose a model of differential teacher effectiveness which takes into account that: * teachers may be more effective with some categories of students than with others * teachers may be more effective with some teaching contexts than others * teachers may be more effective with some subjects or components than with others. Building on and developing previous research on models of teacher effectiveness and current theories, the authors open up possible new debates which will be of interest to academics and researchers working in this area throughout the world.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study determined the level of computer use for instructional purposes by technology education teachers in Ohio public schools. The study also investigated the relationships between the level of use and selected factors: expertise; access; attitude; support; and teacher characteristics. This study derived its theoretical framework from Rogers2 (1995) model of diffusion of innovations. A survey-correlation research design was used. A questionnaire was developed and mailed to all technology education teachers (N = 1170) in Ohio public schools in the 2002-2003 school year. Validity and reliability were established for the survey instrument. The return rate of the survey was 66%. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used. The findings of this study indicated that technology education teachers have high levels of computer use in mainstream computer uses such as word processing, e-mail, Internet, and classroom management. Strong positive correlation existed between the level of computer use and teachers2 perceived expertise and teachers2 perceived attitude toward computers as tools. In addition, moderate positive correlation existed between the level of use and teachers' perceived access to computers. Multiple regression analysis indicated a positive predictive value toward computer use with the demographic characteristics of instructional experience and modular instructional method, and a negative predictive value with age and urban geographic location. The independent variables that explain the greatest amount of variation in the level of computer use were in order of predictive value: teachers2 perceived expertise, attitude, and access. Technology education teachers have high levels of computer use in mainstream applications and low levels of computer use in specialized applications. These levels of use are slightly lower than the state levels. Those teachers that possess expertise are the ones who use the computer for instructional purposes. Positive attitudes toward computers as tools provide a starting point for adoption of computer use. To increase computer use, technology education teachers need to be given more training. In-service training needs to be a top priority. Pre-service programs should include more courses in using computers as tools for teaching and learning.

Book excerpt: The initial phase of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI) provided all 7th and 8th grade students and their teachers with laptop computers. In the fall of 2003, a survey of all teachers involved with the program was administered by Maine Education Policy Research Institute to determine how and to what extent the technology was being used. An analysis of the surveys was completed to answer the following questions: (1) Can responses on teaching philosophy questions be used to predict the amount a teacher uses their laptop?; (2) Can responses on teaching philosophy questions be used to predict the amount students use laptops in their classroom?; and (3) Do prior computer experience, content area, teaching experience, or education levels affect the philosophy-usage relationship? Teacher responses were analyzed as a whole and also by content area with a focus on how math and science teachers use computers compared to teachers in the other content areas. The analysis of the survey responses shows that there is evidence that teaching philosophy does impact computer use both by the teachers themselves and by the students in their classrooms. The best predictor of computer use is prior computer experience. This may suggest a need for additional pre-service computer training and on-going professional development if computers are going to be used extensively in all classrooms. A list of the items analyzed found on the Teacher Survey Form B-Fall 2003 is appended. (Contains 8 resources.).

Book excerpt: An intensive qualitative two-year study of computer usage in an urban high school suggested many barriers to the utilization of microcomputers for instructional purposes. These barriers included (a) teachers' lack of clarity about why and how computers can be used in various fields, (b) teachers' lack of familiarity with computer hardware and software, (c) the overload of knowledgeable teachers, (d) the inertia inherent in a system in which well-established alternative procedures seem to be working adequately, and (e) the threat that the process of learning about and using computers posed to many teachers' sense of competence. Incentives leading to computer usage were considerably fewer and weaker. The included (a) teachers' belief that important instructional goals could best be met through computer usage, (b) teachers' own personal enjoyment of computer usage, and (c) administrators' belief that computers were useful as a public relations tool in attracting and retaining the students who might otherwise attend private schools. The study also found indications that when computer usage does occur to a substantial extent it may markedly influence important aspects of classroom structure and functioning. For example, there was reason to believe that heavy use of at least certain kinds of software led to a shift in grading practices and changes in the amount and type of attention given to students of varying achievement levels.
