The nature of this condition, as well as its relationships with numerous predictors, has been investigated for decades. However, there is still a significant lack of agreement among the findings of these research studies. The current study examines gender differences in relationships between age, time without mathematics, math preparedness level, student perceptions of teachers' and parents' attitudes toward this discipline, and math anxiety. The corresponding relationships are also investigated for two major dimensions of this condition: numerical anxiety and math test anxiety. The results of this study indicate that impact of the proposed predictors on math anxiety vary based on gender. It further suggests that the structure and nature of this condition are different for female and male students.

To achieve this objective, a concise definition of statistics anxiety, as well as, the distinction between statistics anxiety and math anxiety is provided as the scientific rationale why the focus of this discussion is on interventions that reduce statistics anxiety, but not math anxiety in general. Statistics anxiety has become an issue of concern in higher education due to its implications on teaching and learning. In retrospect, the trends of statistics anxiety are quite alarming. This aspect is evidenced by Onwuegbuzie and Wilson (2003) who report that statistic anxiety affects 80% of behavioral and social sciences students. They also report that most degree programs require students to enroll in quantitative research and statistics courses as part of their training. These statistic courses are reported to evoke anxiety-provoking experiences among students. Similarly, Macher et al. (2013) reaffirm that statistics courses have been found to be the major source of anxiety in student’s curriculum. Further evidence is provided by Dykeman’s (2011) study which investigated the levels of anxiety between students in statistic courses and those in other education courses. The common feature underlying all of the strategies described in this book is their emphasis on actively engaging students who seek to make sense of natural objects and events. Many of the strategies we highlight emerge from a constructivist view of learning that has gained widespread acceptance in recent years. In this view, learners make sense of the world by forging connections between new ideas and those that are part of their existing knowledge base. For most students, that knowledge base is riddled with a host of naïve notions, misconceptions and alternative conceptions they have acquired throughout their lives. To a considerable extent, the job of the teacher is to coax out these ideas; to help students understand how their ideas differ from the scientifically accepted view; to assist as students restructure and reconcile their newly acquired knowledge; and to provide opportunities for students to evaluate what they have learned and apply it in novel circumstances. The No Child Left Behind Act mandated that by school year 2013-2014, all students in public schools across the nation are to perform at the proficient level or higher in math. The specific problem addressed in the present study was low measures of students' math achievement in one Mississippi school district. Prior research suggested that math anxiety was a major factor that influenced students' math performances. Hypothesis 1 for this study stated there is a statistically significant negative relationship between seventh grade students' math anxiety scores and their math achievement scores. Hypothesis 2 stated there is not a statistically significant difference in measures of math anxiety between 7th grade boys and girls. Hypothesis 3 stated there is not a statistically significant difference in measures of math anxiety between Black and White 7th grade students. To test hypothesis 1, a correlation coefficient was computed using the Pearson Product-Moment Coefficient, also known as Pearson r. To test hypotheses 2 and 3, a t-Test was used to determine whether differences between the means for math anxiety for the two samples were significant. The results of this study indicate that math anxiety and math achievement are negatively related. As math anxiety increased, measures of math achievement decreased. The results of this study also suggest that math anxiety is a general concern for all students, in that there were no differences in measures of math anxiety between boys and girls or Black students and White students. It is very important that teachers take the time to identify students who have math anxiety so they can assist the students by implementing strategies and techniques to eliminate math anxiety for those students who may benefit with higher math achievement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research study was to explore student and teacher perceptions on the usefulness of teaching students to practice positive coping strategies for managing math anxiety in a high school International Baccalaureate mathematics classroom. This study used a reflective action research methodology in which students’ math anxiety levels were assessed using Alexander and Martray’s Abbreviated Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (1989). Students were then surveyed on their use of coping strategies for managing math anxiety, presented with a variety of positive coping strategies, and asked to rate each strategy on its perceived worth and the likelihood that they would continue to use the strategies in the future. A variety of open-ended and Likert scale questions were used, and the teacher-researcher maintained a reflective journal on how the lessons and strategies were received. In this study, a survey of 48 juniors and seniors in an International Baccalaureate mathematics course revealed that the majority of the students had experienced varying degrees of math anxiety, with 21% being highly math anxious. Nearly half of the participants reported either using negative coping strategies or not being aware of any coping strategies at all for handling math anxiety or academic stress. Almost all of the students reported that it was a valuable use of their time to talk about math anxiety and practice these strategies in class. The results of this study indicate that there is a need for mathematics educators to include a discussion of math anxiety and how to cope with it in their classrooms.
