Book excerpt: The relationship between involvement in ECA, academic achievement and self esteem was studied in the research paper. The sample included 141 middle and high school students selected from 2 middle SES schools in Greater Beirut. The findings of the ANOVA and t-test suggest that there is a statistically significant difference in the academic achievement of participants in moderate hours of ECA (10-15 hrs/week) compared to low (0-9) or high (16+) participation in ECA. Additional results suggested that self esteem among the three groups was insignificant. Moreover the outcomes revealed that ECA related to sports had greater impact on the academic performance of students than non sport ECA. However, males were the most influenced when it came to sports. Further longitudinal research can be done to identify the long term effect of these ECA on students. The number of ECA can be complementary study as well.

Book excerpt: Participation in extracurricular activities has the potential to significantly impact an adolescent's opinion about themselves; specifically to view themselves in a more positive light. Meeting new friends, developing interests, learning the importance of time- management while working together toward a common goal are all outcomes adolescents benefit from while participating in a school-based extracurricular activities. High self-esteem in adolescents is associated with the ability to resist peer-pressure, to develop stronger self-regulation tactics, and to generate enjoyment in day-to-day activities. Adolescents who are involved in extracurricular activities demonstrate positive adjustments with transitions and satisfactory academic achievement. It is a fine line between participation and over-participation in activities as too many activities may result in students feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Finding balance between school, work and extracurricular activities contributes to the overall well-being of the student.

Book excerpt: Participation in school-based extracurricular activities in relation to self-esteem was examined. The study assessed the relationship between participation in school-based extracurricular activities and self-esteem through surveying high school students, grades nine through twelve, living within midwestern Wisconsin. The survey was administered during the spring semester of the 2006-2007 school year. In previous research, participation in school-based extracurricular activities has been associated with many various positive effects on school aged individuals (Steitz & Owen, 1992). One of those positive effects is self-esteem. This study addresses three research questions; What is the relationship between student participation in extracurricular activities and student self-esteem among high school students? What is the relationship between gender and self-esteem levels among students who participate in extracurricular activities? And is anyone type of extracurricular activity more strongly related to student self-esteem than the others? The current research study has shown that male students who participated in school-based extracurricular activities have a significantly higher level of self-esteem than those males who did not participate in school-based extracurricular activities. The study also determined that males had a significantly higher level of self-esteem than females, whether or not they choose to participate in school-based extracurricular activities. Recommendations for future studies as well as educators were also addressed.

Book excerpt: Pre-University Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Pedagogy - General, grade: 1.0, , language: English, abstract: This study was undertaken to find out what are the common experiences of students in participating extra-curricular activities. Also this study aims to know on how students cope up the difficulties they’ve experienced while joining extra-curricular activities. Only fifteen selected students are involved in the research, thus we recommend that they must gather more respondents in order for them to generalize the views and experiences of the students for having an extra-curricular in school. Based on the data that we gathered from all of our respondents that are involved in extra-curricular activities, many of them share the same experiences regarding their participation on ECA. They gain experiences that positively affect them and can be used to improve and enhance not only their grades but their skills and their personality as a student and as a person. For all the students who have extra-curricular activities, researchers recommend that if they will involve to this kind of activity, they should balance their time management in order to not affect their academic performance. In addition, for students who wants to have extra-curricular activities, we recommend that they should prioritize their academics first before other things so that they could not suffer difficulties especially when it comes to projects, assignments and tests.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive literature review was conducted to examine the relationship between academic achievement and extracurricular participation. Three main "schools of thought" were found to exist with regard to the merit of extracurriculars: The Negativist, the Positivist, and the Optimist. Historically, the emergence of public education through around the 1960s was predominately Negativist. The prevailing view up until recently was Positivist, but research has indicated support for both positions and a new theory, The Optimist, is emerging as an evidence based perspective on extra-curricular activity and positive student outcomes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the following research was to check : (a) if there is any statistically significant relationship between the overall self-regulatory strategies scores and academic achievement , (b) if there is any statistically significant relationship between any of the selected four self-regulatory strategies scores and academic achievement , (c) which of the four self-regulation strategies has relatively more weight in predicting academic achievement, (d) if there is any significant gender-difference in overall use of self-regulation strategies , (e) how would the relationship between self-regulation (total and subtotal strategies scores) and academic achievement compare across type of school , and (f) whether there would be any significant correlation between students' self-regulation scores as reported by students themselves and as reported by their respective teachers . The self-regulation strategies under investigation were the following : (a) goal-setting , (b) self-consequating , (c) self-monitoring , and (d) reviewing records . GPA was taken as the measure for academic achievement. A review of the literature was then presented. An overview of the methodology was presented concerning the sampling procedures , administration of the test , and analysis of the results . The instrument was a questionnaire administered to 315 Lebanese fourth and fifth grade students - 8.5 to 9.5 years - representing two school orientations , namely ( Lebanese and American . Test-retest reliability coefficient of the instrument after 30 days interval was observed to be r = .83 at p .001 . Means and standard deviations were calculated for each category . Simple correlation coefficients were calculated to determine whether there existed any significant relationship between (a) overall self-regulation scores and GPA and (b) scores on separate self-regulation strategies and GPA . Multiple regression was performed to see whether any of the four strategies had relatively more weight in predicting GPA . A f-test was conducted to see whether any significant gender-difference existed in overall use of self-regulation strategies and achievement . The same statistical tests just mentioned - i.e. simple correlation , multiple regression , and /-test - were performed again to check whether any statistical differences existed in the sample if we compare results across type of school . Overall use of strategies was not correlated with GPA neither in Lebanese orientation schools nor in American orientation schools . In fact , correlation coefficients were found to be r = .24 and r = -.01 respectively , both at p .05 . Among strategies , no separate strategy was found to be significantly correlated with GPA neither in Lebanese orientation schools nor in American orientation schools . Multiple regression showed that goal-setting had the highest weight among other strategies in predicting GPA in the Lebanese orientation schools ; while no separate strategy showed to have any significant weight in predicting GPA in the American orientation schools too . T-test showed no significant gender-difference neither in the Lebanese orientation schools nor in the American orientation schools in overall use of self-regulation strategies . Finally , simple correlation showed no relation between self-regulation strategies use as reported by students themselves and as reported by those students' respective teachers . Results were discussed in terms of social cognitive interpretation of self-regulation . Recommendations for further research were also presented at the end.

Book excerpt: This analysis provides insight into how social identity theory applies to adolescent social interaction by examining the relationship between adolescents' perceived popularity and involvement in extracurricular activities. Involvement in extracurricular activities has long been an a rea of interest for socialogists because of its relationship to adolescent behavior and academic outcomes. Studies show that involvement in extracurriculum activities is related to delinquent behavior, academic achievement, self-esteem, and college aspirations. Although previous research on extracurricular activities analyzed a wide range of topics qualitatively, few studies examined involvement in extracurricular activities and popularity using quanitative analysis. Understanding how extracurricular activities influence popularity levels can provide valuable insight into the formation and maintenance of adolescent social identity and adolescent social systems. In this study, I address this issue by examining whether students who are involved in extracurricular activities are more likely than non-participants to identify themselves as popular. Because some studies suggest that different types of extracurricular activities result in varying outcomes, I analyze whether this relationship varies based on the type of activity in which the student is involved.

Book excerpt: There has been a growing discussion in the fields of education and psychology about the relationship between social skill proficiency and academic excellence. However, the presence of extracurricular involvement as promoting both academic and social development has not been thoroughly explored. The most recent literature syntheses and meta-analyses on extracurricular activity participation were conducted in the 1980's. An updated review and quantitative look at the participation literature is due. The purpose of this study is to integrate participation studies from the 1990s and give summative information as to the impact of extracurricular activity participation on various educational and psycho-social characteristics. Of the 164 identified studies, 41 were included in these meta-analyses. The current analyses produced 6 different activity categories: general extracurricular activity, sports, work and vocational activities, performing arts, pro-social activities, and community-based activities. The current meta-analyses suggest student outcomes were significantly related to general extracurricular activity and pro-social activity participation. General activities and pro-social activities had the most impact on academic achievement, while performing arts and pro-social activities' participants reported the largest effect on identity and self esteem related outcomes. Sports and related activities (i.e. Cheerleading) were not as strongly linked to academic achievement indicators as anticipated and student workers had more negative outcomes than any other activity participants. In conclusion, the best outcomes for children and adolescents are brought about through well-built, developmentally appropriate structured activities. Moreover, the academic and social profits of extracurricular activities that have been examined in this study can be used to inform program planning and implementation.
