Book excerpt: Patient-centered, high-quality health care relies on the well-being, health, and safety of health care clinicians. However, alarmingly high rates of clinician burnout in the United States are detrimental to the quality of care being provided, harmful to individuals in the workforce, and costly. It is important to take a systemic approach to address burnout that focuses on the structure, organization, and culture of health care. Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being builds upon two groundbreaking reports from the past twenty years, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System and Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, which both called attention to the issues around patient safety and quality of care. This report explores the extent, consequences, and contributing factors of clinician burnout and provides a framework for a systems approach to clinician burnout and professional well-being, a research agenda to advance clinician well-being, and recommendations for the field.

Download or read book Review of Literature written by Starr T. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review of literature examines empirical literature regarding nurses' job satisfaction in relation to long work hours and correlated factors such as nurse resilience. The widespread nursing shortage and high nurse turnover are of great concern in many countries and has become a global issue impacting the effectiveness of healthcare systems (Lu, While, & Louise Barriball, 2005). While many factors have been linked to nurses' turnover, job satisfaction is the most frequently cited (Lu et al., 2005). To guide this literature review, the following question was formulated to address the issue of nurse job satisfaction: Do nurses who have longer work hours, such as 12-hour shifts, experience decreased job satisfaction? A review of literature was conducted using CINAHL, ProQuest Nursing, & Google Scholar databases to identify and examine prior research on long work hours such as 12-hour shifts contributing to decreased job satisfaction among nurses. The findings from this literature review suggest that longer hours contribute to decreased job satisfaction among nurses, and facilitating an eight-hour workday can improve job satisfaction - Abstract.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hypothesis of this study stated that the level of job satisfaction will be higher in professional staff nurses who work the 12-hour shift than professional staff nurses who work the 8-hour shift. The sample was composed of 50 professional staff nurses found in a private, non-profit, acute care facility. The level of job satisfaction was measured by Brayfield and Rothe's questionnaire, "Index of Job Satisfaction." The population studied consisted of two groups: the 12-hour shift nurses and the 8-hour shift nurses. The t-test score obtained from these two groups was not found to be statistically significant at the 0.05 level. The study showed that the level of job satisfaction for both groups was similar and indicated a high degree of satisfaction. The results of the study implied that it was the ability to choose specific work shifts that influenced job satisfaction. It is the recommendation of this researcher that a questionnaire be developed to address the more specific characteristics of job satisfaction and choice of work shift, and that comparison studies be carried out relating to job satisfaction, work shift and specific areas of work.

This was a non-experimental, descriptive study focusing on perceptions of persona issues, conflicts, and concerns of nurses working 12-hour shifts. Imogene King's nursing model based on general systems theory and goal attainment was the conceptual framework for this study. Data was collected utilizing a questionnaire distributed to registered nurses working at an urban hospital in Southern Ohio. Fifty nurses responded to the questionnaire including 45 staff Registered Nurses, 4 Clinical Team Managers and 1 Clinical Nurse Specialist. Overall, the research questions did not reveal any statistically significant findings, there were however several analyses worthy of discussion. Work status, personal time away from work, age ranges in relation to family obligations and the ability to pursue professional enrichment while working certain shifts were included. Data was analyzed using simple descriptive correlation statistics. This study contributes to current literature and provides information to enhance nurse job satisfaction and retention. Future theory, research and practice implications were identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the recruitment and retention problems resulting from the current nursing shortage, the relationship between flextime and job satisfaction was investigated. The hypothesis for the study maintained that nurses who worked flextime would have an increased level of job satisfaction. The sample consisted of 21 full-time registered nurses in an urban hospital, 11 of whom worked 8-hour shifts while 10 worked 12-hours. Levels of job satisfaction were measured by scores in the Brayfield and Rothe Job Satisfaction Index. Scores for the 8-hour nurses were compared to those of the flextime nurses using the t-test for independent samples. Analysis of the data was not significant at the.05 level; therefore the hypothesis was not accepted. Implications for further research in this area include additional studies of flextime utilizing samples.
