Book excerpt: This study seeks evidence supporting the existence of market efficiency and exchange rate sensitivity on stock prices in the Johannesburg stock exchange (JSE). The sample includes the daily price indices of all securities listed on the JSE, and the exchange rate of the USD/Rand for the period since January 2000 to December 2004. The results from the unit root test, the ADF test and the causality test at the Granger sense provide evidence that the Johannesburg stock exchange (JSE) is informationally efficient. It has a long run comovement with exchange rate, and long run equilibrium or steady state. Hence, in JSE there is a strong possibility that foreign direct investors and forex market traders cannot influence and gain abnormal extra benefits by using exchange rate mechanism or by using exchange rate to forecast stock prices in the market. So, JSE is semi-strong form efficient. Through cointegration test, this paper gives more insight on the concept of market efficiency and the reliability of the results. These results are important to security analysts, investors, and security regulatory exchange bodies in policy making decision to improve the market conditions.

Book excerpt: There exists significant literature investigating the link between macroeconomic variables and stock market returns. Most previous studies utilise an overall stock market index to measure stock market returns, thereby aggregating a number of different industries into a single index. This research investigated the link between macroeconomic variables and a single sector's share returns, being the Resources sector. The aim was to ascertain whether or not a correlation exists between the Resource Index of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and four macroeconomic variables, namely: GDP, Inflation, Interest rates and the Rand/US Dollar Exchange Rate. Quarterly data for all 4 macroeconomic variables and the Resource Index was collected for the period 2002 to 2011 and tests of correlation performed between each macroeconomic variable and the Resource Index. The findings reveal that there is a positive correlation between GDP and resources share returns, a negative correlation between interest rates and resources share returns and a positive relationship between the Rand/US Dollar Exchange rate and resources share returns. The relationship between the inflation and the resource share returns proved inconclusive. Copyright.

Therefore, an understanding of the functioning of financial markets is a critical business skill. Yet, history proves financial markets to be erratic creatures. The purpose of this research report was to determine whether stock prices always reflect fundamentals or whether they display persistent deviations from their long-run equilibrium fundamental values due to irrational investor behaviour. The research was limited to earnings and dividends in terms of fundamentals and under- and overreaction in terms of investor behaviour. A two-regime non-linear dynamic model was applied to quarterly data of stock price, dividends and earnings for companies listed on the JSE Securities Exchange (the JSE) from 1980 to 2007. The results of the study demonstrate that although the South African equity market is not totally extreme, it contains quite substantial short-term noise. This outcome provides a compelling case for value investing. Against this backdrop, recommendations were made to individual investors and corporate managers.
