Book excerpt: This study used an idiographic approach to examine the association between similarity or complementarity on valued characteristics and romantic relationship satisfaction. This study also examined how self-liking of a trait is related to importance of similarity or complementarity of a trait. College students and employees of a local outpatient behavioral health center (N = 96) rated their partners on perceived similarity of personality traits, attitudes, interests, and religion; the importance of similarity of these traits; the importance of complementarity of personality traits; and relationship satisfaction. The results revealed significant Similarity x Importance interactions for religion, attitudes, and neuroticism. This suggests that similarity in religion, attitudes, and neuroticism was related to relationship satisfaction only if the participant valued similarity in that dimension. The results also indicated that higher levels of self-liking of a trait were associated with participants' ratings of importance of similarity of a trait, while lower levels of self-liking were associated with participants' ratings of the importance of complementarity of a trait. The results suggested that an idiographic approach may be more suitable than a nomothetic approach for some dimensions of similarity, but not for others.

Book excerpt: The exploration of interpersonal relationships has led to the recognition that similarity has played a large role in the relationship quality, e.g. satisfaction, of dyads, specifically romantic dyads. Three categories of similarity have been shown to best predict satisfaction: communication, attitudes, and values. This study examined the actual, perceived, and ideal value similarity of heterosexual romantic dyads at the University of Tennessee and assessed relationship quality which included satisfaction, intimacy, trust, and social provisions. Using stepwise regressions and Pearson Product correlations this study determined that actual, perceived, and ideal value similarity significantly predicted the relationship quality of the individual and the couple. Results showed that no difference was found between actual similarity and perceived similarity in their ability to significantly predict relationship quality. This study primarily explored the relationships of values of the self, partner, and ideal partner in order to further understand relationship quality and identity. Intraindividual and dyadic correlations were formed to assess the degree of similarity of values for each gender and the couple. Results demonstrated that ideal value perceptions were significantly and positively related to relationship quality and also revealed a gender difference. For example, when an individual's rating of their partner was correlated with the rating of an ideal partner for each gender, results demonstrated a gender difference where only male correlations significantly predicted relationship quality. Possible implications for future research concerning value similarity, gender differences, and identity were then discussed.

Book excerpt: Several studies have examined the role of personality in romantic relationships, many focusing on relationship outcomes resulting from personality similarity between partners. This study aims to determine whether personality similarity or understanding of personality (accuracy) between romantic partners more accurately describes the current sample of college students, with an added focus on a possible mediating role of relationship conflict between personality similarity/accuracy and relationship satisfaction. A sample of heterosexual dating couples rated themselves and their partners on the Big Five personality dimensions and provided ratings of their levels of relationship satisfaction and conflict. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed no significant results for females in the sample. For males, it was found that both similarity and accuracy positively predicted relationship satisfaction and relationship conflict. However, length of relationship was a stronger predictor of relationship satisfaction than either similarity or accuracy. Similarity was a stronger predictor of relationship conflict than accuracy. Relationship conflict did not play a mediating role between personality similarity/accuracy and relationship satisfaction. Possible explanations of these results are discussed and some clinical implications, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research in this area are provided.
