Data for this study was provided from the Texas Education Agency's (TEA) Office for Public Information Requests. The study included four independent variables: percent of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, average years of teachers' experience, attendance rate and average class size in mathematics. The dependent variable was the 8th grade African American males' performance on the mathematics STAAR exam. The study examined scores from the mathematics STAAR exam for the years 2012-2014. The sample population included 1,540 schools and 47,169 individual test results. Book excerpt: One of the most consistently reported challenges in the education literature is the underachievement of African American males at all levels of the education pipeline - from elementary and secondary schools through to postsecondary education. African American boys are falling behind and they are falling behind early. This research focuses on resources within the home environment that are available to support the educational achievement of African American boys. There are a number of mechanisms through which parental involvement in the home and at school may promote academic success that are being examined: parental involvement in school activities, expectations that parents share with their sons and for which they hold them accountable, and parental trust and support for both their sons and their sons' schools. This research sampled families of African American boys in the eighth grade attending Middle Schools in the North Long Beach area of Southern California. It employed a mixed methods approach in using both questionnaires and surveys for collecting data. Thirty two parents were selected at random and completed questionnaires about attitudes and behaviors related to the home environment that impact their sons' educations. An additional group of randomly selected parents were personally interviewed to gain more in-depth responses. The sample was then divided into two groups according to the STAR Math scores attained by eighth grade boys in the families responding. This measure was used as an indicator of academic success because the STAR test score determines the Math class level for children in the local school district - with those scoring above 325 advancing to Geometry and those scoring below 325 taking lower level classes. The results of the questionnaires and interviews indicate an overall relationship in both groups showing trust and high expectations as being very important in fostering academic success in African American boys in the eighth grade. The consistency of positive home structural factors contributed to the academic success of boys in the families studied in spite of negative factors such as economic deprivation, parental unemployment, previous parental incarceration and lack of transportation.

Current research proposes academic efficacy, sense of school belonging, and racial identity are internal psychological processes which enhance the academic achievement of African American adolescent males, and thus contribute to the closing of this gap. However, very little research has focused on the relationships between these processes and adolescent African American males who attend majority White high schools in middle-sized cities. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between academic efficacy, sense of school belonging, and racial identity. More specifically, this research examined whether sense of school belonging and racial identity are predictors [AS1] of academic efficacy, and if perceived academic efficacy predicted positive academic achievement for African American males in high schools with small African American student populations. To achieve this purpose adolescent African American males who attend majority White high schools in middle-sized cities were surveyed and analyzed [AS2] using linear bivariate and multiple regression. The results indicated [AS3] sense of school belonging and racial attitudes which possess high racial salience had a significant relationship with academic efficacy. The results also indicated academic efficacy predicted positive academic achievement. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research were discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not differences exist between African-American male and African-American female middle and high school students in attitude toward school and learning based on gender, age and grade level. This concept of attitude toward school was further clarified using the four factors of Tenenbaum's Theory of Attitude (Tenenbaum, 1944, 1964). These factors (attitude toward schoolwork, attitude toward teachers, general attitude toward school, and a global attitude toward school) when used to determine whether a student is performing well academically or not, may offer some explanation for the existence of the achievement gap between middle school and high school males and females. A total of 380 students at the middle school level and high school level were participants for the study (Female = 184, Male = 196). A 60-item survey was administered to the participants. The research findings showed that the level of attitude toward school for a student was among the predominant influences on student achievement, particularly for determining differences in attitude between male and female middle and high school students. It was the researcher's position that the four factors have a causal connection to gender, age, and grade level. The research questions and the hypotheses proposed by this investigation tested the null hypotheses for attitude toward school (schoolwork, teachers, general attitude toward school, and global attitude toward school) based on gender, age and grade level. The survey results obtained from the sample (African-American middle school and high school students) did support the research literature that indicates that there is a difference in attitude between males and females based on age and grade level. This research also examined the possibility of interaction between gender and age concerning attitude toward school (attitude toward schoolwork, attitude toward teachers, general attitude toward school, and global attitude toward school). There was also an examination of the possibility of interaction between gender and grade level concerning attitude toward school (attitude toward schoolwork, attitude toward teachers, general attitude toward school, and global attitude toward school) as well. As a result, it was determined that a significant interaction occurred between the independent variables (gender and age, and gender and grade level). -- Abstract.
