Traditional Danish Proverb This bit of Danish folk wisdom expresses an idea underlying much of the current thinking about social support. While the clinical literature has for a long time recognized the deleterious effects of unwholesome social relationships, only more recently has the focus broadened to include the positive side of social interaction, those interpersonal ties that are desired, rewarding, and protective. This book contains theoretical and research contributions by a group of scholars who are charting this side of the social spectrum. Evidence is increasing that maladaptive ways of thinking and behaving occur disproportionately among people with few social supports. Rather than sapping self-reliance, strong ties with others particularly family members seem to encourage it. Reliance on others and self-reliance are not only compatible but complementary to one another. While the mechanism by which an intimate relationship is protective has yet to be worked out, the following factors seem to be involved: intimacy, social integration through shared concerns, reassurance of worth, the opportunity to be nurtured by others, a sense of reliable alliance, and guidance. The major advance that is taking place in the literature on social support is that reliance is being -placed less on anecdotal and clinical evidence and more on empirical inquiry. The chapters of this book reflect this important development and identify the frontiers that are currently being explored.

From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. Book excerpt: Approximately 28,000 foster youth are discharged from the foster care system annually because they have reached 18 to 21 years of age and are considered adults (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2011). Between the years 2000 through 2010, an estimated 228,000 young adults aged out of the child welfare system, nationally (Weidner, 2010). This exploratory study sought to highlight the relationship between attachment and resilience in foster care alumni. The study included adult foster care alumni perspectives on their personal history, attachments style and level of resilience. Examination of the attachment styles of young adults yielded significant differences between a group of individuals who were never in foster care and a group of individuals who spent time in foster care and exited as young adults. Utilizing questionnaire method, this quantitative study examined patterns of 43 foster care alumni compared to 39 non foster care service recipients. Key findings suggest that young adults who were successful shared similar levels of social and financial supports. Consistent, easily accessible services were critical to successful outcomes for young adults. Study results also suggest a need for future research in building resilience through decreased use of school suspensions, enhanced use of housing subsidies, building creative cohabitation opportunities, increasing parental visitation during adolescence, and increasing ways to express emotion in order to improve adult outcomes for young adults emancipating from foster care.

Book excerpt: An extensive amount of correlational research has well-established the link between insecure attachment style and subsequent adverse interpersonal and psychopathological outcomes. Moreover, the rise of social media has precipitated a shift in the methods by which individuals communicate; consequently, this has resulted in the shifting of preexisting dispositions toward dysfunctional behaviors to a more ubiquitous route of manifestation. Given that attachment literature has indicated notable differences in both underlying mechanisms and resulting outcomes of both avoidant and anxious attachment, examination of this alongside social media use provides valuable insight into potential relationships between the two. Further, research has examined the implications of each of these constructs in relation to self-esteem and loneliness; however, despite the extensive research, there remains a lack of consensus on the positive or negative implications of these interactions. Accordingly, much of the previous literature has neglected to examine the potential psychopathological implications following the combination of each of these constructs. A series of regression analyses revealed significant indirect effects between attachment style and depression. Results indicated a significant positive relationship between best friend attachment anxiety and social media usage; further examination revealed notable significant mediating roles of both self-esteem and loneliness in the indirect relationship between insecure attachment style and depression. Collectively, these findings not only extend research’s understanding of the complex dynamics amongst these variables, but it also advocates the value of further research into attachment style-specific outcomes.
