Book excerpt: This study explored the differences between career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) and perceived career barriers of students enrolled in the applied technology program compared to those enrolled in a college transfer program at a southeastern urban community college. Participants in the ex-post facto cross-sectional survey included 787 full and part-time students at the community college. There were three research questions: (1) Are there differences in mean scores of CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs by demographic characteristics (gender, ethnicity, age, first-generational, employment, full and part-time student status)? (2) What is the predictive value of these demographic variables on CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? (3) Is there a relationship between CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? The Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form and Career Barriers Inventory-Revised were administered to participants and data were analyzed using two sample t-tests, ANOVA and multiple regression models. There were significant differences between applied technology and college transfer students in terms of perception of career barriers and career decision-making self-efficacy. The applied technology students, who tended to be older, had higher career decision-making self-efficacy scores than the college transfer students and that did not change across the other demographic variables (gender, etc). Previous research related to college student development, parental influences, and career development is presented in order to assess the current body of literature and provide rationale for the present research project. In addition, the author conducted a survey with undergraduate college students to better understand the role that parents play in their career development. Parental influences were found to be positively correlated with students' career self-efficacy. General supportive parenting behaviors seemed more significant than career-specific parenting behaviors. One specific behavior was found to be predictive of students' career self-efficacy. Results are discussed, and implications for counselors are presented.

Despite the growing literature examining family support and gender influences on the career decision-making self-efficacy of college students in western countries such as the U.S. and Europe, little research has been conducted with non-western countries such as Kenya. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between career decision-making self-efficacy and family support factors of Moi University students. The career decision-making self-efficacy scale short-form (CDMSES-SF; Betz, Klein, & Taylor, 1996) measured career decision-making self-efficacy, and family support factors were measured by the family influence scale (FIS; Fouad et al., 2010). Students reported high CDMSE, but gender did not significanty predict students' CDMSE. Out of the four family support factors, only informational support and financial support significantly predicted students' CDMSE. Moreover, there was no statistically significant relationship on the interaction between gender and informational support and gender and financial support. These findings indicate the important role that family support plays in the CDMSE of their children.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to provide initial results on the development and validation of the Career Futures Inventory (CFI), a 25-item measure that assesses positive career planning attitudes. This theory-driven scale development project attempts to assess domain specific career optimism and perceived adaptability including planfulness, decisional skill, and self-awareness. Savickas' (1997) extension of Super and Knasel's (1981) career adaptability construct and Scheier and Carver's (1985) dispositional optimism construct provided theoretical context for scale development. The CFI emphasizes the empirical measurement of dispositional generalized expectancies within the career domain and adaptability related to an individual's unique career goals and present self-concept. In particular, the CFI relates to the goal of achieving an individualized optimal career status, situated between specific trait-like principles or self-efficacy estimates and the global idealized self. Results from an item analysis of scale homogeneity and exploratory factor analysis in a sample of 690 undergraduates from a large Midwestern university revealed three subscales: (1) Career Adaptability; (2) Career Optimism; and (3) Perceived Knowledge. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the three-factor model provided an excellent fit to the data. Additional analyses established high internal consistency, temporal stability, and construct validity through examination of correlates with dispositional optimism, Big Five personality characteristics, generalized problem-solving, vocationally-relevant self-efficacy, interests, and numerous career-relevant attitudes and outcomes. Results demonstrated that optimistic and adaptable people appear to strive higher academically, report greater comfort with their educational and career-related plans, show higher levels of career identity, and engage in career exploration activities more thoroughly. These results support the concurrent validity of the CFI scales. Moreover, a series of hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated the incremental validity of career optimism after controlling for dispositional optimism, self-efficacy, positive and negative affect, and the Big Five as they related to career exploration attitudes. Implications for future research and counseling practice are discussed. The assessment of optimism and adaptability shows promise for strengthening the identification, modification, and achievement of appropriate career-related goals.

Book excerpt: Guided by the Career Construction Theory (CCT; Savickas, 2013), this program of research examined an integrative process model of career adaptation and provided construct validity evidence for the career adaptability measure (i.e., Career Adapt-Abilities Scale). Three empirical studies were carried out to clarify the relationships between adaptivity, adaptability, and adaptation outcomes across career stages and contexts. These studies offer empirical groundwork to test the theoretical assertions of CCT. Furthermore, it elaborates the existing nomological network of career adaptability by investigating its dispositional antecedents, socio-cognitive mechanism, and career success outcomes. Altogether, the current research aims to explicate how individuals enact their careers while successfully adjusting to changing work demands and conditions. The primary objective of empirical paper 1 was to examine the dispositional antecedents of career adaptability and provide factorial and convergent validity evidence for the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS) among Australian university students (N = 555). Path analysis was performed to test the relationship between proactive personality, learning goal orientation, career optimism, and career adaptability. The hypothesized relationships were supported. Results also confirmed the factorial and convergent validity of CAAS and it demonstrated internal consistency over a 4-week interval between measurements. To further provide validity evidence and extend the CCT model in the entrepreneurial career context, empirical paper 2 examined the outcomes of career adaptability using a sample of Serbian business students (N = 380). Results supported the moderated mediation model and as predicted: (a) career adaptability was positively associated with entrepreneurial intentions and (b) the mediated relationship between career adaptability and entrepreneurial intentions via entrepreneurial self-efficacy was stronger for individuals with prior exposure to family business. Once again, the results demonstrated evidence for internal consistency and construct validity of CAAS. Finally, empirical paper 3 examined the overall model of successful career adaptation by investigating the relationship between adaptivity (e.g., tenacious goal pursuit and flexible goal adjustment) and career success outcomes (e.g., career satisfaction and promotability) via career adaptability. It also tested the validity and psychometric utility of CAAS in a non-Western and developing economy context. Results demonstrated evidence for internal consistency and convergent validity of CAAS in a sample of Filipino university students (N = 289) and working adults (N = 495). Furthermore, the proposed mediated model was supported and as predicted: (a) tenacious goal pursuit and flexible goal adjustment was positively associated with career adaptability, (b) career adaptability was positively associated with career success outcomes, and (c) tenacious goal pursuit and flexible goal adjustment was indirectly related to career success outcomes via career adaptability. Taken together, the present research was able to bring robust contributions to further our understanding of career adaptability. First, it substantiated the psychometric utility and construct validity of the CAAS across career stages and contexts over a period a time. As a whole, the empirical studies shed light on how individuals, in both organizational and entrepreneurial career pathways, use their self-regulation resources to successfully navigate through transitions in an increasingly complex career landscape. Theoretical and practical implications, and research directions are provided.

A sample of 206 Asian international students across 17 countries and regions was recruited and used for further data analysis. They have completed the demographic form, family influence scale, assessment of human agency, hopeful career state, acculturation index, and career decision self-efficacy short form via an online platform, Qualtrics. This study used preliminary analysis, descriptive analysis, FIS confirmatory factor analysis, and two-step structural equation modeling to answer the research questions and test the hypotheses. The results indicated that family financial support was a significant predictor of career decision self-efficacy. Hopeful career state mediated the indirect effects between family influence on career decision self-efficacy among Asian international students. The results of the alternative model analysis supported that hopeful career state weakly mediated the relationship between family financial support and career decision self-efficacy. Hopeful career state mediated the positive relationship between human agency and career decision self-efficacy. The effect of human agency was stronger than the effect of family financial support on career decision self-efficacy via hopeful career state. The strengths and limitations of the study were discussed. The implication for practice and recommendations for future research were provided.

Book excerpt: The impact of first-generation status and family cohesion on the career thoughts of college students was investigated. While prior research had examined the differences between first-generation and non-first-generation college students, few studies have focused on the career-decision making of first-generation college students. No research to date had specifically explored the relationship between first-generation status, family cohesion, and negative career thoughts of college students. While making a career decision is often a difficult task, it was expected that given their parents' lack of experience with college, first-generation college students would likely experience more barriers in career thinking than other students. In addition, the role of family cohesion was examined. Participants from the study consisted of 105 undergraduate students attending a large public university in the southeast region of the United States. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was utilized to analyze the data. The hypothesis that first-generation students would account for a significant amount of variance in career thoughts was strongly supported. First-generation status accounted for 60% (59.7%) of variance related to negative career thoughts, which was measured by the Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI). The hypothesis that after accounting for variance related to first-generation status, significant additional variance would be accounted for by family cohesion was also supported. Family cohesion accounted for an additional (1.6%) of variance, which was measured by the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation scale. Limitations, clinical implications and directions for future research are discussed.
