The best shade-enduring variety probably is the sugar maple. In the Dakotas and northern Nebraska the box elder answers tolerably well during youth, and is unquestionably the most available species for this purpose. Farther south the Russian mulberry may be sub stituted. The relative shade endurance Of the conifers is indicated in paren theses in the above list, for the reason that the high prices charged for such trees have thus far prevented their extensive use in Western tree planting. For the same reason they have been given a much less important place in the planting schemes which follow than would otherwise have been warranted. This influence is already becoming noticeable in South Dakota in several localities One of the out standing examples to date is in connection with the Clarence Fredrich farm four miles east of Tyndall, South Dakota. In 1936 when land negotiation work was in progress at Tyndall, Mr. Fredrich was decidedly skeptical. He wanted a belt of trees on his farm but felt they could not be made to succeed because of the difficulty he had experienced in establishing a small ash planting near his house. He finally signed up for a standard 1936 shelterbelt, which was planted by the Forest Service. In spite of the fact that 1936 turned out to be the worst drought year in the State's history, his 1936 belt was very successful and thrived even under these severe conditions. When he saw how comparatively easy it was to establish protective shelterbelts he became enthusiastic. His atti tude was If they can do it, why can't I? For the farmer of the Eastern wooded country, the study of how to grow trees has not yet reached, nor is it likely to reach, the same degree Of importance as for the Western farmer. The Eastern farmer has often to consider only what trees shall be allowed to grow up and what shall be introduced, while the Western farmer has to consider what may be grown and how. The greater interest centers about the Western planter because of his greater need for wood material, and also because the growth of trees under his conditions is most difficult. The importance of establishing wood lots or shelter belts on farms that lack them is no less Obvious than the necessity of raising the staple crops. The provident farmer can not afford to buy firewood, fence posts, or building timber any more than he can afford to buy corn and wheat. A part, if not all, of the wood material used on the farm can and should be grown there. The profit on this timber growth rightly belongs to the farmer, and it is therefore one which economic agricultu're can not neglect. The relative value Of wood lots in the prairie region and the wooded East is, Of course, different. To the prairie farmer the possession of a wood lot affording posts, rails, poles, and firewood is of very great importance, since, being in a treeless reglon and distant from the sources Of wood supply, he would otherwise be compelled to pay high prices for such material. The Eastern farmer is less dependent, even though his wood lot has been cut Off, for he lives in a wooded country, where posts, fuel, and lumber are comparatively cheap. The scope of the farmer's tree planting will necessarily be small. In order to be entirely successful, smaller tree-planting operations should give useful results within one man's lifetime. This country varies so greatly in soil, climate, and flora that it is only possible, within the limits assigned for the present discussion, to outline general principles everywhere applicable. Nevertheless, wherever suggestions have approximated the laying down of rules of practice, the writer has had mainly in mind the conditions prevalent in our northeastern States. Moreover, for the reason already referred to, limitation of space, it has not been possible to give more than a comprehensive view, without much detail. The succeeding chapters should be read connectedly, as they are more or less interdependent. The first treats of the behavior of a forest plant; the second, of the principles which should guide the planter in setting a crop; the third, of the manner in which a natural forest crop should be produced; the fourth points out how the crop should be managed afterwards in order to secure the best results in quantity and quality of material; while the fifth chapter is devoted to a consideration of the relation of forests to farms. 1. How Trees Grow. Trees, like most other plants, originate from seed, build up a body of cell tissues, form foliage, flower, and fruit, and take up food material from the soil and air, which they convert into cellulose and other compounds, from which all their parts are formed. They rely, like other plants, upon moisture, heat, and light as the means of performing the functions of growth. Yet there are some peculiarities in their behavior, their life and growth, which require special attention on the part of a tree grower or forest planter, and these we shall briefly discuss. Food Materials And Conditions Of Growth. Trees derive their food and solid substance in part from the air and in part from the soil. The solid part of their bodies is made up of cellulose, which consists largely of carbon(44 percent of its weight), with hydrogen and oxygen added in almost the same proportions as in water.
