Book Synopsis Oral Health and Environmentally Related Factors Associated with General Health and Quality of Life by : Gaetano Isola
Download or read book Oral Health and Environmentally Related Factors Associated with General Health and Quality of Life written by Gaetano Isola and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-09 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship of oral disease to overall disease is certainly not a new concept. For centuries, the role of oral infection and inflammation in contributing to diseases elsewhere in the body has been studied and reported. During the last few decades, a series of intriguing reports from many countries have increased the current interest in the role of oral health and disease in contributing to general health and systemic conditions. Is it possible that oral and periodontal disease is a risk factor for cardiovascular and other systemic diseases? Since this question was first posed, a phenomenal body of work has been directed at understanding how oral periodontal disease might affect distant sites and organs and, thus, have an effect on overall health. Recent studies of the human microbiome using DNA sequencing technologies have revealed new insights into the possible mechanisms that help to explain how oral infections can occur in distinct sites such as atheromas, the colon, and reproductive tissues.

Download or read book Oral Sepsis written by William W. Duke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral Sepsis: In Its Relationship to Systemic Disease In the preparation of this little book, the aim has been to present as briefly and clearly as possible the rather complex relationship which frequently exists between infections of the gum and alveolar process and certain systemic disorders. This has necessarily involved a discussion of some of the more complex problems of bacteriology, immunology, and pathology as well as of dentistry. In so small a space it has not been possible to take up any of these subjects in great detail, and for this reason those especially interested in certain particular phases are referred to the writings of Rosenow, Billings, Schottmüller, Poynton and Payne, Libman, Vaughan, von Pirquet, Wolff-Eisner, Richet, Rosenau and Anderson, and other investigators to whom we are indebted for many of our more recent ideas which have a bearing upon this very important subject. In the opinion of the writer, the discovery of the relationship which frequently exists between the various chronic infections and systemic disease marks a great practical advance in the science and therapy of medicine. For centuries it has been evident to physicians that certain acute inflammatory lesions give rise to systemic disturbances. One of the main advances of recent years, therefore, has been the disclosure of the fact that small and apparently innocent infections which give rise to little or no local disturbance may likewise be the source of serious generalized disease. For the proper care of medical cases, the hearty and intelligent cooperation of the dentists is absolutely essential.
