Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prince of Peace There are honest doubters whose sincerity we recognize and respect, but occasionally I find young men who think it smart to be skep tical they talk as if it were an evidence Of larger intelligence to scoff at creeds and to refuse to connect themselves with churches. They call themselves Liberal, as if a Chris tian were narrow minded. Some go so far as to assert that the advanced thought Of the world has discarded the idea that there is a God. To these young men I desire to address myself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is simply a written Sunday school lesson rather than the oral variety. The primary topic is war and the relationship of a Christian to it. While someday war shall be studied no more, that day has not yet arrived. This book chronicles with specific examples how a few Christians like Rev. J. J. Taylor, Alvin York, Vernon Grounds, Franz Jagerstatter, and the author himself have approached the topic. Dietrich Bonhoeffer also makes a guest appearance, as do Tolstoy, Gandhi, and MLK. The book does not advocate a pure pacifism. The author has not solved all the problems associated with that viewpoint and does not know anyone who has. But it does argue for peacemaking, the likes of which is addressed by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount and by St. Paul, who urges us to wrestle with principalities and powers, i.e., ideas, and not to wrestle with flesh and blood. This the author has tried to do within these peacemaking pages and the comparative safety of his laptop and life in bucolic and pastoral Jamestown, North Carolina.

He would not have one living stone left out; Nor would he force beloved ones to build it thus; He feeleth their infirmities; They fail and fail; He bids them try again, again. He loveth them; And not until they boastful grow and vain, Doth He withhold His strong, redemptive hand, And leave the pagan pile to rotting suns and rain: E'en then He pitieth them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ the King The beautiful truth of the Kingship of Christ, which the Church had ever held, her devotion to Jesus Christ as King, which runs like a thread of royal purple through the prayers of the Christian ages, were now to be given a new liturgical significance. And no time, indeed, could have been more opportune than that which the Holy See had chosen to proclaim anew unto all the nations and all the world, the reign of the Saviour over all mankind, the Kingdom of the Prince of Peace. Three subjects are proposed for consideration in the Encyclical of Pope Pius XI: the Kingship of Christ, the Kingdom of Christ, and the special feast of Jesus Christ, King, based upon both these truths. Of the first alone I shall treat in the present chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Israel and Judah: From the Reign of Ahab to the Decline of the Two Kingdoms Thus much must for the present suffice - the more so, as in the next Volume (which will conclude the Old Testament History) the opportunity will necessarily present itself for larger retrospect and wider survey. It only remains to add that the treatment of the subject in this Volume will be found in ac cordance with the progressive plan of this work, repeatedly in dicated in previous Volumes. Alike the critical and exegetical notes will be found more frequent and more full, and the general treatment more detailed, and designed for more ad vanced readers. A new Element in the present Volume is the light brought to bear on this period from the ancient monu ments. We live in days when more attention than ever before is given to the critical study of the Old Testament 3 in days also when attacks are chiefly directed against the trustworthiness, the credibility, and, as it seems to us, the Divine Authority, in its true sense, of the Old Testament. There are those, we will gladly believe, who can disjoint, and in logical connection with it, re-interpret the Old Testament, and yet retain their full faith in its direct Divine character, and in its preparation for the Christ. We must frankly confess that we are not of their number. There is, indeed, a general Divine character in the Old Testament, and a general preparation in it for the New, whatever historical views we may take of it, or whatever inter pretations we may give of it. We would even advance beyond this, and say that Christ and Christianity have their absolute truth, quite irrespective of the Old Testament. But to us at least Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ is the direct outcome of the Old Testament, as well as its higher fulfilment: not only a light to lighten the Gentiles, but, and even in this very respect also the glory of Thy people Israel. Book excerpt: Thoroughly sharp and honest treatment of a brutal conflict. The Algerian War (1954-1962) was a savage colonial war, killing an estimated one million Muslim Algerians and expelling the same number of European settlers from their homes. It was to cause the fall of six French prime minsters and the collapse of the Fourth Repbulic. It came close to bringing down de Gaulle and - twice - to plunging France into civil war.The story told here contains heroism and tragedy, and poses issues of enduring relevance beyond the confines of either geography or time. Horne writes with the extreme intelligence and perspicacity that are his trademarks.

Al though this colleetion follows in its steps, it would not be restrieted in its purpose. It has been written for the service of those attending on any who cannot, for the time being, read to themselves. Like David's harp to the spirit of Saul, to these it would bring peace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 79: July, 1917 A friend favors us with a communication in which he expresses the Opinion that the Star should not give space to a war chron ology. He says he feels sad when he hears Latter-day Saints take delight in describing victories, as he is Opposed to war. And any thing connected with it. We would say to our friend that his views on this subject are in full accord with the gospel of our Redeemer. He came to the earth as the Prince of Peace, and was hailed at His birth as the bearer of good will to men, and, although the preaching of His message to the world brought, at first, not peace but the sword, and although this still holds true to some extent, yet the ultimate effect Of the proclamation of that message will be the redemption of the world from hatred, conflict, and bloodshed, and the establishment of the Millennial Brotherhood of Man. The reign of the adversary will be ended and the kingdom of God will prevail. That is the glorious achievement for which the Latter-day Saints are laboring in the world. It is the very purpose for which the Church exists. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
