Book Synopsis Jesuits in the North American Colonies and the United States by : Catherine O'Donnell
Download or read book Jesuits in the North American Colonies and the United States written by Catherine O'Donnell and published by Brill Research Perspectives in. This book was released on 2020 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Eusebio Kino to Daniel Berrigan, and from colonial New England to contemporary Seattle, Jesuits have built and disrupted institutions in ways that have fundamentally shaped the Catholic Church and American society. As Catherine O'Donnell demonstrates, Jesuits in French, Spanish, and British colonies were both evangelists and agents of empire. John Carroll envisioned an American church integrated with Protestant neighbors during the early years of the republic; nineteenth-century Jesuits, many of them immigrants, rejected Carroll's ethos and created a distinct Catholic infrastructure of schools, colleges, and allegiances. The twentieth century involved Jesuits first in American war efforts and papal critiques of modernity, and then (in accord with the leadership of John Courtney Murray and Pedro Arrupe) in a rethinking of their relationship to modernity, to other faiths, and to earthly injustice. O'Donnell's narrative concludes with a brief discussion of Jesuits' declining numbers, as well as their response to their slaveholding past and involvement in clerical sexual abuse.00Also available in Open Access.

Book Synopsis A History of the French in London by : Debra Kelly
Download or read book A History of the French in London written by Debra Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines, for the first time, the history of the social, cultural, political and economic presence of the French in London, and explores the multiple ways in which this presence has contributed to the life of the city. The capital has often provided a place of refuge, from the Huguenots in the 17th century, through the period of the French Revolution, to various exile communities during the 19th century, and on to the Free French in the Second World War.It also considers the generation of French citizens who settled in post-war London, and goes on to provide insights into the contemporary French presence by assessing the motives and lives of French people seeking new opportunities in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It analyses the impact that the French have had historically, and continue to have, on London life in the arts, gastronomy, business, industry and education, manifest in diverse places and institutions from the religious to the political via the educational, to the commercial and creative industries.

Download or read book Jesuit Art written by Mia M. Mochizuki and published by Brill Research Perspectives in. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Jesuit Art', Mia Mochizuki considers the artistic production of the pre-suppression Society of Jesus (1540-1773) from a global perspective. Geographic and medial expansion of the standard corpus changes not only the objects under analysis, it also affects the kinds of queries that arise. Mochizuki draws upon masterpieces and material culture from around the world to assess the signature structural innovations pioneered by Jesuits in the history of the image. When the question of a ?Jesuit style? is rehabilitated as an inquiry into sources for a spectrum of works, the Society?s investment in the functional potential of illustrated books reveals the traits that would come to define the modern image as internally networked, technologically defined, and innately subjective. 0Also available in Open Access.
