Book excerpt: This paper reviews the literature on foreign exchange and foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Philippines. The objectives of the research are to provide an overview of the Philippine foreign exchange rate, analyze the impacts of FDI on the Philippine economy, and determine the opportunities and problems that arise from Philippine foreign exchange and FDI, as well as suggest policy recommendations to improve the country's economic performance. The PRISMA methodology uses to identify and evaluate relevant studies. Results showed that several factors, such as economic indicators, political factors, and worldwide trends, influence the exchange rate in the Philippines. Additionally, foreign direct investment is crucial to the Philippine economy's growth and development, with inflows making a significant contribution to economic growth and new employment created as a result. Challenges to the Philippine foreign exchange and FDI include its susceptibility to external shocks due to reliance on FDI inflows and the need for help managing foreign exchange reserves. However, there are opportunities, including technology transfer, job creation, regional trade and investment potential, and sovereign wealth fund development. The government should prioritize policies encouraging technology transfer and FDI to highvalue industries while implementing measures to control the volatility of FDI inflows. This paper concludes that foreign exchange and FDI can be used as tools for economic growth in the Philippines. Further research should be conducted to examine the long-term impacts of FDI inflows and the effectiveness of government policies in managing foreign exchange. This paper also highlights the importance of strengthening the Philippine economy through technological transfer and FDI and managing foreign exchange reserves. Finally, this research provides insights for policymakers to maximize the benefits of foreign exchange and FDI in the Philippines.

Book excerpt: Foreign direct investment is an important part of an increasingly integrated global political economy. This book explores the political and economic consequences of this type of investment in six countries located in the Global South. Qualitative country comparisons are presented by region: Thailand and the Philippines in Southeast Asia, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire in Africa, and Costa Pica and Guatemala in Central America. The paired comparisons detail the political and economic situations of these countries, their policies toward foreign direct investment, and their experiences with that investment. The analysis indicates that the effects of foreign direct investment are shaped by the existing development patterns in host countries.

Book excerpt: During the 1990s, the governments of South Asian countries acted as ‘facilitators’ to attract FDI. As a result, the inflow of FDI increased. However, to become an attractive FDI destination as China, Singapore, or Brazil, South Asia has to improve the local conditions of doing business. This book, based on research that blends theory, empirical evidence, and policy, asks and attempts to answer a few core questions relevant to FDI policy in South Asian countries: Which major reforms have succeeded? What are the factors that influence FDI inflows? What has been the impact of FDI on macroeconomic performance? Which policy priorities/reforms needed to boost FDI are pending? These questions and answers should interest policy makers, academics, and all those interested in FDI in the South Asian region and in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of foreign direct investment in Southeast Asia during both the late colonial period and in the contemporary period. It covers all major countries receiving foreign investment in the region and embraces the entire twentieth century. Pioneering under the protective umbrella of European colonialism is depicted with examples from French Indochina, British Malaya, Dutch Indonesia and the Philippines under American rule. The arrival of today's Asian investors, from Japan and the four Asian NICs, is described after a brief interlude about the transitionary period of warfare, decolonization and assertion of newly independent states. Special attention is given to the impact of foreign investment on the economic development of the host country. The colonial drain is contrasted with today's prospects for transfers of technology in an area that is once again attractive for foreign capital.

Book excerpt: The importance of foreign investment to China goes well beyond the USD 1.6 trillion in investment received since its opening. The unique analysis in this book shows that the investments, operations, and supply chains of foreign enterprises have accounted for roughly one-third of China’s GDP in recent years, and that foreign enterprises have made numerous additional contributions to China through technological, managerial, business practice, supply chain, and other spillovers. This book shows how China’s leaders managed this process and provides lessons for policy makers interested in building their own economies and tools for companies to demonstrate their contribution to host countries.

Book excerpt: Substantial increases in agricultural investments in developing countries are needed to combat poverty and realize food security and nutrition goals. There is evidence that agricultural investments can generate a wide range of developmental benefits, but these benefits cannot be expected to arise automatically and some forms of large-scale investment carry risks for host countries. Although there has been much debate about the potential benefits and risks of international investment, there is no systematic evidence on the actual impacts on the host country and their determinants. In order to acquire an in-depth understanding of potential benefits, constraints and costs of foreign investment in agriculture and of the business models that are more conducive to development, FAO has undertaken research in developing countries. This publication summarizes the results of this research, in particular through the presentation of the main findings of case studies in nine developing countries. It presents case studies on policies to attract foreign investment in agriculture and their impacts on national economic development in selected countries in Africa, Asian and Latin America.
