Book excerpt: The story of an astonishing band of Canadian soldiers and their part in the Allied victory in Italy. The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment (the Hasty Ps) was Canada’s most decorated regiment in the Second World War, winning thirty-one battle honours. Famed for their role in the Allied invasion of Sicily and the conquest of Italy, for six years the members of the regiment suffered brutal conditions, fighting bravely in the face of fierce opposition from the enemy, and ultimately triumphing. In The Regiment (originally published in 1955), Farley Mowat, famed Canadian fiction writer and regiment member, tells the story of the Hasty Ps, from their recruitment in September 1939 until the end of the war. Mowat was a second lieutenant and platoon leader with the regiment, and writes movingly of the great suffering his fellow soldiers endured, their bravery in battle, and the lasting friendships he forged as a member of the group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its important role in the early years of the Civil War, the Army of the Ohio remains one of the least studied of all Union commands. With All for the Regiment, Gerald Prokopowicz deftly fills this surprising gap. He offers an engaging history of the army from its formation in 1861 to its costly triumph at Shiloh and its failure at Perryville in 1862. Prokopowicz shows how the amateur soldiers who formed the Army of the Ohio organized themselves into individual regiments of remarkable strength and cohesion. Successive commanders Robert Anderson, William T. Sherman, and Don Carlos Buell all failed to integrate those regiments into an effective organization, however. The result was a decentralized and elastic army that was easily disrupted and difficult to command--but also nearly impossible to destroy in combat. Exploring the army's behavior at minor engagements such as Rowlett's Station and Logan's Cross Roads, as well as major battles such as Shiloh and Perryville, Prokopowicz reveals how its regiment-oriented culture prevented the army from experiencing decisive results--either complete victory or catastrophic defeat--on the battlefield. Regimental solidarity was at once the Army of the Ohio's greatest strength, he argues, and its most dangerous vulnerability.

Book excerpt: "Wickedly satirical . . . nothing short of brilliant.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) The 31st entry in Sir Terry Pratchett’s internationally bestselling Discworld series about the art of war and the brave women who wage it. War has come to Discworld. The homes and businesses throughout the duchy of Borogravia limp along, doing the best they can without their men, sent to fight their age-old enemy. Polly has taken over the lion’s share of responsibility for the running of her family’s humble inn, The Duchess. Her beloved brother Paul marched off to war almost a year ago, but it has been more than two months since his last letter home, and the news from the front is bad: the fighting has reached the border, supplies are dwindling, and the brave Borogravians are losing precious ground. So the resourceful Polly cuts off her hair and joins the army as a young man named Oliver. As Polly closely guards her secret, she notices that her fellow recruits seem to be guarding secrets of their own. A novel that explores the inanity of war, the ins and outs of sexual politics, and why often the best man for the job is a woman, Monstrous Regiment is vintage Pratchett in top form. The Discworld novels can be read in any order but Monstrous Regiment is a standalone.

Book excerpt: In this companion volume to her pioneering study Redcoats Against Napoleon, Carole Divall tells the fascinating inside story of a typical infantry regiment during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Rather than focusing on the history of the 30th Regiment of the Line in action and on campaign, she explores its organization, traditions and hierarchy, its personnel, and the ethos that held it together. Using primary source material, in particular surviving regimental records, War Office documents, letters and journals, Divall reconstructs the life of the 30th Foot – and the lives of the men who served in it – during a critical period in Europes military history.

Book excerpt: The product of over a decade of research, Lesley J. Gordon’s A Broken Regiment recounts the tragic history of one of the Civil War’s most ill-fated Union military units. Organized in the late summer of 1862, the 16th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry was unprepared for battle a month later, when it entered the fight at Antietam. The results were catastrophic: nearly a quarter of the men were killed or wounded, and Connecticut’s 16th panicked and fled the field. After years of fighting, the regiment surrendered en masse in 1864. This unit’s complex history amid the interplay of various, and often competing, perspectives results in a fascinating and heartrending story.

Book excerpt: Kenya settlers, of European extraction, performed enthusiastically in a variety of roles in the Emergency Forces: Serving in Kenya Regiment companies; serving as patrol commanders attached to the Kings African Rifles with African troops, and with British regiments as guides, tracker handlers and advisers; as District Officers with the Kikuyu Guard as leaders and instructors in military skills; as pseudo Mau-Mau terrorists; as policemen; as pilots with the Kenya Police Air Wing; as criminal investigation and intelligence officers. They participated with good humor and enthusiasm at all levels and gave their expertise freely. Many were extraordinarily effective and many served in isolation from their superior officers, who relied on their initiative. Generally, the Kenya Regiment personnel received the cooperation of the local African populace, who accepted them as disciplined, reliable troops, keen to rid the country of the scourge of terrorism. There was a mutual respect between the Africans and the settler soldiers and their cooperation in anti-terrorist operations strengthened the bonds of comradeship and widened understanding between the races. After eighteen months military service as a patrol commander in the field I had gained special skills. The Mau-Mau terrorists had suffered heavy losses from desertions as well as casualties. The dwindling numbers of hard-core terrorists remaining in the forests had to be hunted down and this necessitated increased hunting skills. I had learned tracking skill from Ngalu, but there were areas where my knowledge was weak. I was pleased when I was sent to the Tracker School at Nanuki. The instructors had been picked from Kenya Regiment personnel whose civilian jobs were with the Game Department and the National Parks. I felt sure, under their instruction my skills would be augmented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exploits of the British Army's elite 22nd Special Air Service Regiment - the regiment of the SAS that forms part of the Regular army - are shrouded in mystery and myths abound about its members. But what is the truth behind the public facade of clinical professionalism? How has such a small regiment attracted so many weighty legends? And what is the purpose of the SAS in the 21st century? "Special Force" provides an original and unusually critical overview of the activities of the SAS from the Malayan Emergency of 1950 to the present day. In the context of a detailed and often controversial analysis of the post-war activities of the Regiment, MacKenzie establishes that the Regiment's almost legendary professional competence is often not backed up by reality. Far from being part of a structured deployment of strategic military assets, MacKenzie argues that the use of the SAS in recent years has been primarily driven by the 'entrepreneurial' actions of a few SAS commanding officers. "Special Force" not only offers a revelatory history of the SAS in the modern period, it is also a disturbing expose of the truth behind the myth. It will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in the British military - past, present and future.
