Book excerpt: In Maritime Disputes in Northeast Asia: Regional Challenges and Cooperation, Suk Kyoon Kim provides an important multidisciplinary perspective on maritime disputes in one of the most dynamic areas of the world: Northeast Asia, a region of divergent political and economic systems where the legacy of a tumultuous past continues to overshadow current events. The text highlights maritime issues on the Korean Peninsula and extends an analytical eye to neighboring China, Japan and Russia. Kim explores in-depth the factors and issues at stake with complex maritime disputes, focusing on maritime boundary delimitation, territory, energy resources, fishery, marine pollution, and security and safety. This volume provides a timely international law perspective informed by an intricate historical, political, and socio-economic context, while offering a vision for future cooperation.
Book Synopsis Tide-Influenced Sedimentary Environments and Facies by : P.L. de Boer
Download or read book Tide-Influenced Sedimentary Environments and Facies written by P.L. de Boer and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three-day Symposium on Clastic Tidal Deposits was organlzed In Utrecht in August 1985, and attended by about 200 participants. Durlng the meeting some 60 papers and 25 posters were presented, while simultaneously workshops on varlous topics were held. The meeting was generously sponsored by the International Asso ciation of Sedimentologists, the Royal Dutch I Shell Exploration and Productlon Laboratories, Brltish Petroleum Company, Chevron Oil Company, and K.L.M. This volume contalns extended versions of papers that were presented durlng the meeting, papers reporting about items studied durlng the excursions, and, more over, several contributions which were soliclted after the conference In order to make the volume more representative. As in most fields of sedimentological research, the comparlson of recent processes and products with ancient counterparts and vlce versa is important for under standing the full sequence of processes and events that lead to the final end product of tide-influenced sedimentary environments. In this respect we are happy that recent as weil as fossil sediments get ample attention. Research on tidal sedimentary processes and products has tradltionally put much emphasis on siliciclastic sediments. Still, carbonate and mixed carbonate/silici clastic sediments, though being subject to tidal influences in many places, receive little· attention in this respect, which, we regret; is also reflected In this volume.
Book Synopsis China, the United States, and 21st-Century Sea Power by : Andrew S. Erickson
Download or read book China, the United States, and 21st-Century Sea Power written by Andrew S. Erickson and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s reaction to the United States’ new maritime strategy will significantly impact its success, according to three Naval War College professors. Based on the premise that preventing wars is as important as winning wars, this new U.S. strategy, they explain, embodies a historic reassessment of the international system and how the United States can best pursue its interests in cooperation with other nations. The authors contend that despite recent turbulence in U.S.-China military relations, substantial shared interests could enable extensive U.S.-China maritime security cooperation, as they attempt to reach an understanding of “competitive coexistence.” But for professionals to structure cooperation, they warn, Washington and Beijing must create sufficient political and institutional space.

Book Synopsis Island Disputes and Maritime Regime Building in East Asia by : Min Gyo Koo
Download or read book Island Disputes and Maritime Regime Building in East Asia written by Min Gyo Koo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: islands has emotional content far beyond any material significance because giving way on the island issue to Japan would be considered as once again compromising the sovereignty over the whole Korean peninsula. For Japan, the Dokdo issue may lack the same degree of strategic and economic values and emotional appeal as the other two territorial disputes that Japan has had with Russia and the two Chinas – namely the Northern Territories/Southern Kurile Islands and the Senkaku Islands, respectively. Nevertheless, fishing resources and the maritime boundary issues became highly salient with the introduction of UNCLOS. Also, the legal, political, and economic issues surrounding Dokdo are all intertwined with Japan’s other territorial disputes to the extent that concessions of sovereignty on any of these island disputes could jeopardize claims or negotiations concerning the rest. South Korea and Japan have forged a deeper diplomatic and economic partn- ship over the past decade. A new spirit of partnership after the landmark joint declaration of 1998 culminated in the successful co-hosting of the World Cup 2002. At the end of 2003 the two neighbors began to negotiate an FTA to further strengthen their already close economic ties. South Korea’s decades-long embargo on Japanese cultural products has now been lifted, while a number of South Korean pop stars are currently sweeping across Japan, creating the so-called “Korean Wave” fever. A pragmatic calculation of national interests would thus suggest cooperative behavior.
Book Synopsis Yellow Sea Thermal Structure by : Charles R. Fralick
Download or read book Yellow Sea Thermal Structure written by Charles R. Fralick and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There exists a need in the oceanography community to be able to produce climatologies of remote or poorly sampled shallow water areas through remote sensing techniques. Our goal was to construct a three-dimensional thermal structure of the Yellow Sea based primarily upon sea surface temperature data. The ability to do this successfully could lead the way to applying these techniques elsewhere using remotely sensed SST. The shallow water and dynamic conditions of the Yellow Sea made it an ideal study area. The large MOODS observational data set for the area provided us with 15,000 observations from 1929 to 1991. For the winter months we used regression techniques on the predominantly well-mixed, vertically isothermal profiles with excellent results. For the summer we applied a Feature Model which extracted physically significant depths and gradients from the observations. These modeled data were statistically compared with mixed results indicating little link between SST and mixed-layer depth but good correlation between SST and thermocline gradient. We believe interannual variability and significant sampling errors in our data contributed to our mixed results. Overall, we feel our approach is robust and has potential for further applications providing data quality issues are addressed.

Book Synopsis Oceanography of Asian Marginal Seas by : K. Takano
Download or read book Oceanography of Asian Marginal Seas written by K. Takano and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-06-06 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 31 papers on physical and geological oceanography, marine engineering and meterology in the Japan Sea and the East China Sea. Almost all these papers were presented at the Fifth JECSS (Japan and East China Seas Study) Workshop held in Korea in 1989. Results of multinational cooperative studies carried out since the initiation of JECSS in 1981 are presented. Authors are from China, Japan, Korea, UK, USA and USSR. A wide range of subjects are covered from the viewpoint of various disciplines. The status of recent research on Asian marginal seas is outlined and points at issue are defined. An important aspect is the coverage of results from the USSR and China which are not normally easily accessible to scientists in other countries, despite the importance of this research to the international scientific community. Various subjects, from estuaries to the problems related to the whole north Pacific, are covered in this book, and it is recommended to scientists in coastal oceanography, environmental oceanography, mesoscale (synoptic scale) oceanography and large-scale oceanography.
Book Synopsis International Law Of The Sea In The Twenty-first Century, The: State Practice In East Asia by : Keyuan Zou
Download or read book International Law Of The Sea In The Twenty-first Century, The: State Practice In East Asia written by Keyuan Zou and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international law of the sea is the oldest branch in traditional international law but also a fast developing branch in contemporary international law. After the entry into force of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1994, there have been considerable developments in the field of the law of the sea. Some provisions of the Convention proved to be inadequate, ambiguous or difficult for an effective implementation. This book attempts to reflect the latest developments in the law of the sea, including maritime dispute settlement, maritime boundary delimitation, non-traditional maritime security issues, and the impact of maritime powers such as the United States on the development of the law of the sea. While the book takes a holistic approach, it has made a special reference to East Asia, the most vibrant region in economic development and the most volatile place in maritime disputes in today's world.

Book Synopsis The Peninsula Question by : Yoichi Funabashi
Download or read book The Peninsula Question written by Yoichi Funabashi and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 2002 the United States confronted North Korea with suspicions that Pyongyang was enriching uranium in violation of the Agreed Framework that the nations had worked out during the Clinton administration. North Korea subsequently evicted international monitors and resumed its nuclear weapons program. The Peninsula Question chronicles the resulting second Korean nuclear crisis. Japanese journalist Yoichi Funabashi, informed by interviews with more than 160 diplomats and decision makers from China, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and the United States, provides a behind-the-scenes look at the negotiations to denuclearize the peninsula. Between 2002 and 2006, a series of top level diplomats, including the prime minister of Japan, attempted to engage with North Korea. Funabashi illustrates how the individual efforts of these major powers laid the groundwork for multilateral negotiations, first as the trilateral meeting and then as the Six-Party Talks. The first four rounds of talks (2003–2005) resulted in significant progress. Unfortunately, a lack of implementation after that breakthrough ultimately led to North Korea's missile tests in July and subsequent nuclear tests in October 2006. Th e Peninsula Question provides a window of understanding on the historical, geopolitical, and security concerns at play on the Korean peninsula since 2002. Offering multiple perspectives on the second Korean nuclear crisis, it describes more than just the U.S. and North Korean points of view. It pays special attention to China's dealings with North Korea, providing rare insights to into the decision-making processes of Beijing. This is an important, authoritative resource for understanding the crisis in Korea and diplomacy in Northeast Asia.
