Book excerpt: Excerpt from Determination of Absolute Viscosity by Short-Tube Viscosimeters Unfortunately none of the units of T able 1 have been generally employed by oil refiners and jobbers, although, according to Denton,7 tests for viscosity have been in use for over 30 years. In the oil industry in the United States viscosity is usually meas ured by an instrument called a viscosimeter or viscometer, which permits a certain volume of oil to discharge through a short capillary tube, the viscosity, so called, being reported as the time of discharge in seconds, a value which is of little significance unless the make of instrument is stated and is well known. The NBS conducted a lot of research in the fields of science and technology which were reported as "Technological Papers." In 1988 the NBS became what we know now; the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This is one of those documents written by employees of the NBS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Viscosity of Liquids The development of a physical property may follow two paths. Either the intrinsic importance of the property may lead to investigation from a purely physical standpoint, or its application to the elucidation of chemical constitution may cause improvements to be sought for in method, degree of accuracy, and ease of application. In the majority of physical properties utilized by the chemist, progress has gone on uniformly in each direction and a standardization of apparatus and technique has been arrived at, but in spite of a century of experimental work no very definite method has been set up for the measurement of viscosity, and no general agreement has been arrived at for the setting forth and interpretation of the results obtained. To a certain extent the inherent difficulty of understanding the strict physical meaning of viscosity is the cause of this lack of progress. The viscosity of a liquid is at least a dual phenomenon; there is first of all the mechanical friction of molecule against molecule, and this must depend on relative molecular surface and volume; then there is the resistance to deformation brought about by the mutual attraction of the molecules. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Substances for the Calibration of Viscometers The third measurement consisted of a polarization of the approxi mately normal solution on a quartz-wedge saccharimeter. The thoroughly mixed solution was poured into polariscope tubes of known length and polarized at a fixed temperature. The read ing of the saccharimeter was controlled by comparison with quartz plates No. 1 and no. 3, which are the primary standards of this Bureau referred to and described in the paper by Bates and Jackson. In determining the sugar value of these plates the conversion factor 349620 was used instead of the erroneous 349657. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Viscosity of Gasoline The short-tube viscosimeters in common use With lubricating oils are not well adapted to measure viscosities approaching that of water, because changes in viscosity have too slight an influence upon the time of flow. For example, ' with the Engler instrument, the time for gasoline at 10 C F) was found to be seconds, and at 50 C (122 F) it was seconds. For water the corresponding times were and seconds.1 It will be seen that for smaller changes in temperature it might be difficult to detect any change in Viscosity. Book excerpt: The most teachable book on incompressible flow— now fully revised, updated, and expanded Incompressible Flow, Fourth Edition is the updated and revised edition of Ronald Panton's classic text. It continues a respected tradition of providing the most comprehensive coverage of the subject in an exceptionally clear, unified, and carefully paced introduction to advanced concepts in fluid mechanics. Beginning with basic principles, this Fourth Edition patiently develops the math and physics leading to major theories. Throughout, the book provides a unified presentation of physics, mathematics, and engineering applications, liberally supplemented with helpful exercises and example problems. Revised to reflect students' ready access to mathematical computer programs that have advanced features and are easy to use, Incompressible Flow, Fourth Edition includes: Several more exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations Classic-style Fortran programs for the Hiemenz flow, the Psi-Omega method for entrance flow, and the laminar boundary layer program, all revised into MATLAB A new discussion of the global vorticity boundary restriction A revised vorticity dynamics chapter with new examples, including the ring line vortex and the Fraenkel-Norbury vortex solutions A discussion of the different behaviors that occur in subsonic and supersonic steady flows Additional emphasis on composite asymptotic expansions Incompressible Flow, Fourth Edition is the ideal coursebook for classes in fluid dynamics offered in mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egyptian hieroglyphs, Chinese scrolls, and Ayurvedic literature record physicians administering aromatic oils to their patients. Today society looks to science to document health choices and the oils do not disappoint. The growing body of evidence of their efficacy for more than just scenting a room underscores the need for production standards, quality control parameters for raw materials and finished products, and well-defined Good Manufacturing Practices. Edited by two renowned experts, the Handbook of Essential Oils covers all aspects of essential oils from chemistry, pharmacology, and biological activity, to production and trade, to uses and regulation. Bringing together significant research and market profiles, this comprehensive handbook provides a much-needed compilation of information related to the development, use, and marketing of essential oils, including their chemistry and biochemistry. A select group of authoritative experts explores the historical, biological, regulatory, and microbial aspects. This reference also covers sources, production, analysis, storage, and transport of oils as well as aromatherapy, pharmacology, toxicology, and metabolism. It includes discussions of biological activity testing, results of antimicrobial and antioxidant tests, and penetration-enhancing activities useful in drug delivery. New information on essential oils may lead to an increased understanding of their multidimensional uses and better, more ecologically friendly production methods. Reflecting the immense developments in scientific knowledge available on essential oils, this book brings multidisciplinary coverage of essential oils into one all-inclusive resource.
