Book excerpt: 'The Red Axe' by S.R. Crockett is a tale that begins by introducing us to a young boy named Hugo Gottfried, who lives in the City of Thorn, the high capital city of all the Wolfmark. As a child with a crimson patch sewn on his clothes, he is shunned and bullied by the other children who call him part of the "foul brood of the Red Axe." One night, he wakes up crying and climbs to the top of the tower where he watches the city in the snow and moonlight. This is the night he first meets the Little Playmate, and from that moment, his life changes forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red Axe Well do I, Hugo Gottfried, remember the night of snow and moonlight when first they brought the Little Playmate home. I had been sleeping - a sturdy, well-grown fellow I, ten years or so as to my age - in a stomacher of blanket and a bedgown my mother had made me before she died at the beginning of the cold weather. Suddenly something awoke me out of my first sleep. So, all in the sharp chill of the night, I got out of my bed, sitting on the edge with my legs dangling, and looked curiously at the bright streams of moonlight Which crossed the wooden floor of my garret. Ithought if only I could swim straight up one of them, as the motes did in the sunshine, I should be sure to come in time to the place Where my mother was - the place where all the pretty White things came from - the sunshine, the moonshine, the starshine, and the snow. Book excerpt: "[...]could see nothing but the square of smooth pavement on which the children chalked their games, and from which they cried naughtily up at me, the poor hermit of the Red Tower. But this night my father would be with the Duke, and I should see all. For high or low there was none in the empty Red Tower to hinder or forbid. As I waited, thrilling with expectation, I heard beneath me the quickening pulse-beat of the town. The watch hurried here and there, hectoring, threatening, and commanding. But, in spite of all, men gathered as soon as their backs were turned in the alleys and street openings. Clusters of heads showed black for a moment in some darksome entry, cried "U-g-g-hh!" with a hateful sound, and vanished ere the steel-clad[...]".

Crockett," was a Scottish novelist. He was born at Duchrae, Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire, on 24 September 1859, the illegitimate son of dairymaid Annie Crocket. He was raised on his grandfather's Galloway farm, won a bursary to Edinburgh University in 1876, and graduated from there during 1879. After some years of travel, he became in 1886 minister of Penicuik. During that year he produced his first publication, Dulce Cor (Latin: Sweet Heart), a collection of verse under the pseudonym Ford Brereton. He eventually abandoned the Free Church ministry for full-time novel-writing in 1895.Crockett was well travelled in Europe and beyond, spending time in most European countries and he wrote several novels of European history including The Red Axe (1898), A Tatter of Scarlet (1913), and the non fiction The Adventurer in Spain (1903) which holds its own against Robert Louis Stevenson's travel writing.

Book excerpt: This “masterful epic” spans decades and oceans from Trinidad to the American frontier during the tumultuous days of westward expansion (Publishers Weekly). Trinidad, 1796. Young Rosa Rendón quietly rebels against the life others expect her to lead. Bright, competitive, and opinionated, she does not intend to cook and keep house, for it is obvious her talents lie in running the farm she views as her birthright. But when her homeland changes from Spanish to British rule, the fate of free black property owners—Rosa’s family among them—is suddenly jeopardized. By 1830, Rosa is living among the Crow Nation in Bighorn, Montana, with her children and her husband, Edward Rose, a Crow chief. Her son Victor is of the age where he must seek his vision and become a man. But his path forward is blocked by secrets Rosa has kept from him. So Rosa must take him to where his story began and, in turn, retrace her own roots. Along the way, she must acknowledge the painful events that forced her from the middle of an ocean to the rugged terrain of a far-away land. A Booklist Editor’s Choice Book of the Year
