Book excerpt: Dr. Margaret Aranda's newest book is an important reference book for those suffering with intractable low back pain. Such pain leads most patients on a quest, undergoing multiple procedures to resolve the pain. You can understand what kinds of problems certain diagnoses have, and you and your doctor can work together to get your diagnosis. For example, if you had an epidural steroid injection, you may be suffering from a pain syndrome called spinal adhesive arachnoiditis (SAA). If your low back pain is heralded by 24/7 pain, this book is for you. If it is accompanied by burning pain, trouble urinating or passing stool, getting full fast after eating, headaches or migraines, dizziness after standing up, or difficulties having a libido or declining sex performance, this book is for you. If you had an epidural steroid injection that changed your life or are pregnant and thinking of having an epidural for labor pain, the same difficulties can affect you; this book is also for you. If you were highly flexible as a child and had back instrumentation by surgery or an epidural, you may be more prone to suffer subsequent deleterious effects, and this is a must-have book. This book is part of Dr. Aranda's Rebel Patient(TM) Series.Margaret Aranda, MD, PhD brings a unique mix of academia, research, personal experience, and clinical care to her seventh book. After graduating Keck USC School of Medicine, she did her anesthesiology residency and then a critical care Fellowship at Stanford. From there, she went on to become Chief of Anesthesiology at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, as Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in three departments: Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Surgery and Traumatology, and Radiology. She then served our Veterans again at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center as Chief of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, as Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at UCLA School of Medicine.Dr. Aranda is a Stanford and Keck-USC trained physician with specialty training in anesthesiology and critical care. After recovery from a traumatic brain injury, she assumed a pain clinic and is a national referral center for failed back syndrome. The best news is that most patients are diagnosed with the same set of problems, making your future care streamlined and protocolized for a new lease on life. She is the creator of the Rebel Patient(TM) Series of books.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Are you an Upholder, a Questioner, an Obliger, or a Rebel? From the author of Better Than Before and The Happiness Project comes a groundbreaking analysis of personality type that “will immediately improve every area of your life” (Melissa Urban, co-founder of the Whole30). During her multibook investigation into human nature, Gretchen Rubin realized that by asking the seemingly dry question “How do I respond to expectations?” we gain explosive self-knowledge. She discovered that based on their answer, people fit into Four Tendencies: • Upholders meet outer and inner expectations readily. “Discipline is my freedom.” • Questioners meet inner expectations, but meet outer expectations only if they make sense. “If you convince me why, I’ll comply.” • Obligers (the largest Tendency) meet outer expectations, but struggle to meet inner expectations—therefore, they need outer accountability to meet inner expectations. “You can count on me, and I’m counting on you to count on me.” • Rebels (the smallest group) resist all expectations, outer and inner alike. They do what they choose to do, when they choose to do it, and typically they don’t tell themselves what to do. “You can’t make me, and neither can I.” Our Tendency shapes every aspect of our behavior, so using this framework allows us to make better decisions, meet deadlines, suffer less stress, and engage more effectively. It’s far easier to succeed when you know what works for you. With sharp insight, compelling research, and hilarious examples, The Four Tendencies will help you get happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a road map to help healthcare professionals establish a "culture of patient safety" in their facilities and practices, provide high quality healthcare, and increase patient and staff satisfaction by improving communication among staff members and between medical staff and patients. It achieves this by describing what each of six types of people will do in distress, by providing strategies that will allow healthcare professionals to deal more effectively with staff members and patients in distress, and by showing healthcare professionals how to keep themselves out of distress by getting their motivational needs met positively every day. The concepts described in this book are scientifically based and have withstood more than 40 years of scrutiny and scientific inquiry. They were first used as a clinical model to help patients help themselves, and indeed are still used clinically. The originator of the concepts, Dr. Taibi Kahler, is an internationally recognized clinical psychologist who was awarded the 1977 Eric Berne Memorial Scientific Award for the clinical application of a discovery he made in 1971. That discovery enabled clinicians to shorten significantly the treatment time of patients by reducing their resistance as a result of miscommunication between their doctors and themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Lit Hub's most anticipated books of 2024 A revelatory biography of the writer-activist who inspired today’s movements for social and racial justice In the era of Black Lives Matter, Frantz Fanon’s shadow looms larger than ever. He was the intellectual activist of the postcolonial era, and his writings about race, revolution, and the psychology of power continue to shape radical movements across the world. In this searching biography, Adam Shatz tells the story of Fanon’s stunning journey, which has all the twists of a Cold War-era thriller. Fanon left his modest home in Martinique to fight in the French Army during World War II; when the war was over, he fell under the influence of Existentialism while studying medicine in Lyon and trying to make sense of his experiences as a Black man in a white city. Fanon went on to practice a novel psychiatry of “dis-alienation” in rural France and Algeria, and then join the Algerian independence struggle, where he became a spokesman, diplomat, and clandestine strategist. He died in 1961, while under the care of the CIA in a Maryland hospital. Today, Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth have become canonical texts of the Black and global radical imagination, comparable to James Baldwin’s essays in their influence. And yet they are little understood. In The Rebel’s Clinic, Shatz offers a dramatic reconstruction of Fanon’s extraordinary life—and a guide to the books that underlie today’s most vital efforts to challenge white supremacy and racial capitalism. Includes 8 pages of black-and-white photographs

Book excerpt: "Sean has a gift for taking tough concepts and bringing them down to earth in practical ways that make a difference." --William Lane Craig, Ph.D.Following Jesus has never been harder. In a culture that glamorizes sex, chases fame, and shames those who don't fall in line, it takes a rebel to be a Christian. In this book, Sean McDowell aims to encourage and inspire a generation of rebels who will dare to stand up to the madness in a just and loving manner. A Rebel's Manifestooffers clear guidance to help people navigate the many moral issues that plague this generation. Students today are oriented toward action on ethical issues, and Sean will not only help them think biblically about various ethical issues, but he will also offer practical steps to make a positive difference in this world. In this book, Sean covers navigating bullying and social media; handling loneliness, pornography, and sex; approaching various conversations around climate change, race, and other controversial issues; and articulating and defending biblical views at school, online, and with friends. Life doesn't need to devolve into an online shouting match. Sean proposes a better way: to live a life calmly and confidently grounded in biblical truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STROKE REBEL is the story of how Linda, an entrepreneur and former model is fighting her way back to living life successfully after a massive stroke at a young age. Linda's story serves as a blueprint and source of realistic hope for stroke survivors. In April 2016, she suffered a massive stroke at the age of 43, which turned her life upside down. Unfortunately, a blood clot was treated too late and caused extensive damage to the right side of her brain. The stroke left her completely paralyzed on her left side and unable to speak. The doctors could not provide any answers about whether or not she would regain use of her left arm and leg, or talk again. Linda's road to recovery looked bleak. The process was long, stressful, painful, and filled with setbacks. She had to deal with neuropathic pain so severe that she contemplated giving up on life. In a recent interview, she shared, "That was absolute rock bottom. At that point, I made a decision--to fight and become 'a warrior and a rebel' in my own life, and find ways to help other stroke survivors." Doctors told Linda that the six months following her stroke were critical. For Linda, six months was a mental ticking time bomb. But they were also a point of reference from where she had to move forward to take her life back. Linda uncovered a wealth of knowledge that she would later use to help her on the path to recovery. With these new insights, she began to tap into her brain and physical capacity to enable the maximum amount of improvement. In her quest for recovery, she met Arjan Kuipers, who specializes in applied clinical neuroscience. They joined forces to create worldwide home training and tools for stroke survivors and those with brain injuries. Before the stroke, Linda labeled herself a "control freak" and a "workaholic." Now she perceives herself as an ongoing experiment of neuroplasticity. She has made tremendous progress and is still recovering every day.
