But with these same people, Any old thing will not do when it comes to irrigation, architecture, agriculture, sanitation, and education. People who are so unintelligent and indiscriminate with regard to religion, are intelligent and discerning when it comes to other things. It is high time for a reason able religion. The following addresses seek to show. That the essential teachings of the Christian Religion are supremely reasonable. These addresses plead, as their general title indicates, for The Reasonable Religion. May they forward the cause of Him who said, Come, let us reason together. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reasonable Religion Thirteen thousand copies of these addresses were distributed over Central California by the courtesy of the Fresno Morning Republican, Requests for their publication in book form have come from various sources, including laymen engaged in active business, university students, and ministers of the gospel. Similar requests have come from members of the Los Angeles Methodist Preachers' Meeting, before whom three of the "Addresses" were read as "A Paper," in January, 1911. By way of illustration, a phrase of current slang expresses the attitude of many people to-day: "Any old thing" will do for a religious belief. "Dowieism," "Tingleyism," "Eddyism," "Spiritualism," or almost anything else seems good enough for multitudes of people. People are after the very best in everything except in Religion. When it comes to that, "Any old thing will do." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reasonable Religion: Religio Doctoris Lastly, as to the relations between happiness and Virtue, we are taught that the joys of sense can con tribute very little to happiness. Egoism is good, but only so far as it is intelligent. The power to enjoy grows directly as does capacity for sympathy. Even non-moral pleasures may be made means to moral enjoyment. To be true to our own selves brings a joy that abides, for the welfare of society is only the sum of that of the individuals composing it. The value of a sound education is that it makes for Virtue, and this is the author's melioristic creed. The greatest happi ness for us is not beyond the reach of our power to attain it. Love is the highest, and it teaches us the transcendent beauty of the universe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whom Do You Worship?: A Popular Treatise on Reasonable Religion The writer humbly trusts that the following ad dress will be a stepping-stone for many from the Trin itarian to the Unitarian Faith; but, however that may be, should it be the means of gaining but one sincere convert to the religion he advocates, he will not have written in vain. With such eloquence as he possesses, the writer herein appeals to individual common-sense, and entreats the reader to admit the full power of his reason to an investigation of his present actual relig ious sentiments. Reader, let not Mystery have any sway over your mind let Reason be enthroned, and let free inquiry be your governing spirit. Thus will more honor be done to God, and you, my friend, become more worthy to be called His rational creature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why Christianity Is Reasonable The Faith has been roughly buffeted of late and this time it was not the work of the scientist, or the critic, or the philosopher. These are all tolerant now and friendly; they are wondering at the strange revelations that are happening in their own studies, and are being drawn into something like sympathy with wonder and revelation in other departments. Book Synopsis Our Reasonable Faith (Classic Reprint) by : Park Hays Miller
Download or read book Our Reasonable Faith (Classic Reprint) written by Park Hays Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Reasonable Faith This book is the effort of the writer to tell in simple language some of the thoughts concerning the Christian faith and the Christian life which have helped him in the secret battles of his own mind, and which have helped others like himself with whom he has dealt. The book is not a formal argument for the truth of the Christian faith; it is not a book on Christian evidences; nor is it an apologetic; although it is hoped that it will strengthen the faith of those who may be troubled about the truth of Christianity, and that it may give to its readers new reasons for the hope that is in them. The four subjects which are brought together in this book have been discussed separately in many volumes, but the writer does not know of a single book which brings them together in this way for the ordinary reader. That there arc so few quotations from books other than the Bible is due to the fact that most of the material has been made so much a part of the writer's own thinking that he has lost any consciousness of its connection with its original sources. The book deals with four subjects which vitally concern the Christian - the Bible, in which the revelation of God to men has been preserved; great truths revealed in the Scriptures and proved by experience; the Commandments as the laws of conduct; and the Church, through which the truth has been preserved, by which the truth is taught, and in connection with which the Christian finds spiritual nurture and a field for service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reasonable Faith The Religious Society of Friends has no written creed, and therefore no member is authorized to state its beliefs in a sense that makes the Society responsible. The only statement to be found in the Book of Discipline of Baltimore Yearly Meeting of Friends that directly refers to belief is as follows: It is the belief of the Religious Society of Friends that God manifested himself in Jesus Christ, and that the Spirit which was in Jesus is revealed in the human soul and constitutes the Rock on which the Church is founded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reasonable Faith: Short Religious Essays for the Times Bible, - which has also attracted some criticism we feel that our statement is well within the limits of the truth. We commend this special subject to the careful attention of our readers; from a conviction that the acceptance of Christianity by the thoughtful men of the future will depend largely upon a true and reasonable attitude on the part of its professors as to the human element in the Bible, and the progressive character of its teaching. Book Synopsis The Book of Truth by : Henry Septimus Griggs
Download or read book The Book of Truth written by Henry Septimus Griggs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Truth: A Reasonable Faith and the Future Religion of the World The nearest heavenly body to us is the moon, which is called The Daughter because it is so beautiful. It is a distance of about two hundred and thirty-eight thousand miles from this earth. That would be a long journey for Christ to take in a suit of the gardener's clothes. The sun most of the time is about ninety-three millions of miles from this earth. We are told that the distance to all the planets is deter mined with mathematical precision. The fact is that none of the astronomers agree on the exact distance to many of the planets, some of the calculations varying about five million miles. The nearest of the stars is at a distance of about twenty-five billions of miles from this earth. If we should tell our Christian friends, without an explana tion, that we could see so far as that, they would call us liars, or think that we were insane. All of these heavenly bodies are at a great distance from the earth; are independent, each of the other, and are immense distances apart. We see the extent of the heavens, with millions of stars, which are worlds, many of them larger than the earth on which we live. Are not these facts enough to convince a sane person that there is a greater being than man, one whom we call God? This Being we should love and worship in preference to all others. Good men, Whose families are in the church, excellent citizens and neighbors, do not hesitate to express With utmost candor their unbelief in revealed religion. There is very little conventional, or merely formal Christianity here, for there is almost no temptation for a man to conceal his real sentiments if he be an unbe liever.
