Book excerpt: Vehicle routing problems, among the most studied in combinatorial optimization, arise in many practical contexts (freight distribution and collection, transportation, garbage collection, newspaper delivery, etc.). Operations researchers have made significant developments in the algorithms for their solution, and Vehicle Routing: Problems, Methods, and Applications, Second Edition reflects these advances. The text of the new edition is either completely new or significantly revised and provides extensive and complete state-of-the-art coverage of vehicle routing by those who have done most of the innovative research in the area; it emphasizes methodology related to specific classes of vehicle routing problems and, since vehicle routing is used as a benchmark for all new solution techniques, contains a complete overview of current solutions to combinatorial optimization problems. It also includes several chapters on important and emerging applications, such as disaster relief and green vehicle routing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to metaheuristics as applied to vehicle routing problems. Several implementations are given as illustrative examples, along with applications to several typical vehicle routing problems. As a first step, a general presentation intends to make the reader more familiar with the related field of logistics and combinatorial optimization. This preamble is completed with a description of significant heuristic methods classically used to provide feasible solutions quickly, and local improvement moves widely used to search for enhanced solutions. The overview of these fundamentals allows appreciating the core of the work devoted to an analysis of metaheuristic methods for vehicle routing problems. Those methods are exposed according to their feature of working either on a sequence of single solutions, or on a set of solutions, or even by hybridizing metaheuristic approaches with others kind of methods.

The volume begins with "A Primer in Column Generation" which outlines the theory and ideas necessary to solve large-scale practical problems, illustrated with a variety of examples. Other chapters follow this introduction on "Shortest Path Problems with Resource Constraints," "Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Window," "Branch-and-Price Heuristics," "Cutting Stock Problems," each dealing with methodological aspects of the field. Three chapters deal with transportation applications: "Large-scale Models in the Airline Industry," "Robust Inventory Ship Routing by Column Generation," and "Ship Scheduling with Recurring Visits and Visit Separation Requirements." Production is the focus of another three chapters: "Combining Column Generation and Lagrangian Relaxation," "Dantzig-Wolfe Decomposition for Job Shop Scheduling," and "Applying Column Generation to Machine Scheduling." The final chapter by François Vanderbeck, "Implementing Mixed Integer Column Generation," reviews how to set-up the Dantzig-Wolfe reformulation, adapt standard MIP techniques to the column generation context (branching, preprocessing, primal heuristics), and deal with specific column generation issues (initialization, stabilization, column management strategies).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vehicle Routing Problem, which main objective is to find the lowest-cost set of routes to deliver goods to customers, has many applications in transportation services. In the past, costs have been mainly associated to the number of routes and the travel distance, however, in real-world problems there exist additional objectives. Since there is no known exact method to efficiently solve the problem in polynomial time, many heuristic techniques have been considered, among which, evolutionary methods have proved to be suitable for solving the problem. Despite this method being able to provide a set of solutions that represent the trade-offs between multiple objectives, very few studies have concentrated on the optimisation of more than one objective, and even fewer have explicitly considered the diversity of solutions, which is crucial for the good performance of any evolutionary computation technique. This thesis proposes a novel Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm to solve two variants of the Vehicle Routing Problem, regarding the optimisation of at least two objectives. This approach incorporates a method for measuring the similarity of solutions, which is used to enhance population diversity, and operators that effectively explore and exploit the search space. The algorithm is applied to typical benchmark problems and empirical analyses indicate that it efficiently solves the variants being studied. Moreover, the proposed method has proved to be competitive with recent approaches and outperforms the successful multi-objective optimiser NSGA-II.
