Book excerpt: Magic realism has long been treated as a phenomenon restricted to postcolonial literature. Drawing on works from Britain, Lies that Tell the Truth compellingly shows how magic realist fiction can be produced also at what is usually considered to be the cultural centre without forfeiting the mode’s postcolonial attitude and aims. A close analysis of works by Angela Carter, Salman Rushdie, Jeanette Winterson, Robert Nye and others reveals how the techniques of magic realism generate a complex critique of the West’s rational-empirical worldview from within a Western context itself. Understanding magic realism as a fictional analogue of anthropology and sociology, Lies that Tell the Truth reads the mode as a frequently humorous but at the same time critical investigation into people’s attempts to make sense of their world. By laying bare the manifold strategies employed to make meaning, magic realist fiction indicates that knowledge and reality cannot be reduced to hard facts, but that people’s dreams and fears, ideas, stories and beliefs must equally be taken into account.

Book excerpt: Check out the weird and wonderful facts in this massive encyclopedia of alphabetized oddities: HUMANS ARE THE ONLY ANIMALS THAT ENJOY SPICY FOOD (there’s a reason no one sells Tabasco-flavored cat food). NAPPING CAN SAVE YOU FROM A HEART ATTACK (assuming you are not operating heavy machinery at the time). PSYCHOLOGISTS CAN ASSESS YOUR PERSONALITY FROM HOW YOU DIP FRIES IN KETCHUP (nice fries, sociopath). SURFING THE INTERNET ACTUALLY MAKES YOU SMARTER (but not as smart as reading this book will). Now the next time someone tells you smugly that Pluto isn’t a planet, you can counter with any one of these hundreds of weird facts and remain king or queen of the cocktail (or kegger) chatter.

Book excerpt: From people who smell armpits for a living to grass that grows on cars„and needs to be mowed, Time For Kids That's Strange But True! takes an offbeat and very kid-appealing look at the workings and fascinating oddities of the natural world as well as offbeat human behavior and talents. The book's editorial mission is to show kids 8 to 12 that planet Earth is filled with the odd, the weird, and the wacky-both natural, human and human made. It will encourage readers to learn more about the subjects presented, and to spur kids to find examples of strange-but-true phenomena in their own communities. The book, organized by subject, will feature colorful photos that will bring to life the unusual world of the animal kingdom (lizards that walk on water and insects that can live without their head), the human body (hair and nails grow after a person dies), science oddities (teleportation devices and telepathy), and much much more. Written in Time For Kids' authoritative and clear style, even the strangest entries are carefully explained and will provide readers with vital frames of reference needed to make sense of the new and unusual. The book will be devoured at home and at school, and can serve as the basis for original research reports relating to various curriculum areas.
Book Synopsis WEIRD (but true) SHORT STORIES by : Darla Fisher
Download or read book WEIRD (but true) SHORT STORIES written by Darla Fisher and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an intriguing, hard to put down book. Very interesting and easy to read. You may identify with some of the stories herein. These type of events actually happen to many, though not all are willing to share them with others, verbally or in writing. This book encompasses the realm of the spiritual, supernatural, and the unknown. The events reflected herein did happen, and it makes you wonder about the things which are truly unknown, currently, to mankind, but which are true nevertheless. Until the 1990s, scientists thought it was aerodynamically impossible for a bumblebee to fly. After decades of research, they did finally discover the answer to that mystery. Perhaps, in future years, research may discover why many of us experience the strange happenings which are reflected in this book. All of the mysteries of the brain have yet to be unlocked, and not many are willing to admit to alien contacts and why certain memories are buried within us, until they are revealed to us at a later time. Until then, it is interesting to read about these type of happenings and wonder.
