Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While we were preparing for our last foster child to leave us, I made a comment to that foster child that I should write a book about my experiences. She said, "Then why don't you!" Although I had thought about it for quite some time prior to that, I never thought that I would actually sit down and extend this opportunity to others. This information is for anyone who has entertained the thought of helping children. This is a great desire to have. A warm heart is sure to follow the success of any given occasion. This is a story about foster care and adoption. It's not just any story; this is a true story. This is a story of love, diligence, sacrifice, kindness, and willingness to be selfless. This is my story. In the life of every child, they should be able to imagine hopes, dreams, goals, and ways how to be able to achieve them. Instead, I have learned that survival techniques tend to take the place of such thoughts if you are a foster child. Dreams can be crushed, and reality becomes an everyday living nightmare. When this happens, what then? Children are taken into foster homes every day. Foster parents willingly give their time and talents to help those in need. This achievement I believe needs to be a built-in passion. You are not paid for your services as a foster parent. You are, however, reimbursed for your kindness. This is not a get-rich-quick plan. If so, there would be a lot of rich foster parents out there, including us! A passion for life has to be restored in children when such difficult situations arise as a result of inhumane behavior. It is hoped that this information will increase your decision to want to adopt, to help those in need. You, in turn, will find the peace and contentment that your restless heart so richly deserves. These children come from all walks of life, from every background imaginable to mankind. And some backgrounds that aren't imaginable too. They come from all types of situations. Not only will your eyes be opened to a different world of a reality beyond your comprehensible grasp but you will also gain an appreciation for what you have rather than for what you want to have. This information is to help you gain a knowledge of the world of foster care. The questions that have intrigued your mind for years as you have watched your neighbors bring in children that are not theirs can now be answered. Although it is not rude to ask foster parents questions of interest in your behalf, you won't have to worry about daring to ask them questions anymore. This information is not only intended for your education but also to help you maintain your sanity while caring for foster children in your home or the worry of what others might think about what you are doing as a foster parent. This is not an easy thing to do. I don't believe from the bottom of my heart that it was ever meant to be. However, I believe that there are certain people on this earth who care about doing this work simply because they have the kind of heart that can handle it. Not all people can. There was actually a time in our lives when our parents asked us to not do foster care anymore. They had seen so many children and had witnessed what they had been through so many times that they just couldn't take it anymore. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to open your heart and your home to help out a stranger and to be able to learn to love them while they are with you and then in turn to be able to miss them when they leave your home. You know if you are that kind of person because you will feel it in your heart. Should you choose to take this step, there will be a support system there for you to help you along your way. Not everyone will understand why you have chosen to do this. However, you will know in your heart if it is the right thing for you to do. If you feel you can handle what these children have been through and that you won't drop your jaw from shock when you hear each and eve

John DeGarmo, foster and adoptive parent, tells us just how tough it can be, having parented over 40 children. At times he and his wife, Kelly, have cared for up to nine children at a time, many with severe trauma and learning difficulties. Love and Mayhem is an honest and open account of the struggles, sadness and joy that comes with the job of being a parent to a traumatised child. From the sleepless nights with babies withdrawing from drug-addiction, to the heartbreak when a child moves on to another home, and the loving chaos that comes with a large and blended family, John DeGarmo fights for the many children who have come through his home. Ideal for foster families, general readers, fostering agencies and social workers who are looking for a true to life memoir of what it really is to be a foster parent.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book that “casts a searing eye on the labyrinth that is the American foster care system” (NPR’s On Point). Who are the children of foster care? What, as a country, do we owe them? Cris Beam, a foster mother herself, spent five years immersed in the world of foster care looking into these questions and tracing firsthand stories. The result is To the End of June, an unforgettable portrait that takes us deep inside the lives of foster children in their search for a stable, loving family. Beam shows us the intricacies of growing up in the system—the back-and-forth with agencies, the rootless shuffling between homes, the emotionally charged tug between foster and birth parents, the terrifying push out of foster care and into adulthood. Humanizing and challenging a broken system, To the End of June offers a tribute to resiliency and hope for real change. “A triumph of narrative reporting and storytelling.” —The New York Times “[A] powerful . . . and refreshing read.” —Chicago Tribune “A sharp critique of foster-care policies and a searching exploration of the meaning of family.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Heart-rending and tentatively hopeful.” —Salon

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caring for troubled adoptive/foster care children can be both harrowing and heroic. Many of today's foster and adopted children come from backgrounds where they experience not only the loss of previous caregivers, but have also suffered from abuse, sexual exploitation, or neglect. Individuals who invite these children into their homes often find themselves in a therapeutic role that can tax and exhaust. Troubled Transplants focuses on these children, their backgrounds, and their deleterious impact on the interaction and environment with the foster or adoptive family. The authors provide suggestions about behavioral roots and practical strategies to address and improve these issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, hundreds of children enter into the foster-care system for reasons beyond their control. The removal of these children from their natural home can be quite devastating for them. They have an array of feelings and emotions, from being scared of the unknown to being concerned about their biological parents, to adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings and new individuals. But what about the children who already reside in the home prior to the arrival of the foster child? Oftentimes, when adults take in foster kids, they have children of their own, or there are other permanent children living there. The introduction of new kids can be a hard adjustment not only for the foster kids entering the home but also for the biological children of foster parents. This book is one of a series of books about the interaction between foster kids and the original children of the household but is told from the perspective of the biological child. Each book introduces a different dilemma, situation, or challenge that a biological child may encounter in dealing with a foster child who has entered their home. The flip side of the book presents the same situation and what the conversation may look like between the parent and the biological child. It offers some sort of resolution and attempts to give an explanation for the initial problem or behavior that a biological child may be experiencing. So much focus is often given to foster children entering to the system that the feelings and experiences of the biological or permanent child are many times overlooked. It is the hope of the author to offer a stepping-stone to begin a dialogue and help with the everyday challenges of foster families.
