Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Re-Making of China This little book, which I offer to the public, in no way presumes to compete with the several excellent works upon China which have recently appeared, and from which I have occasionally quoted. It is merely the outcome of the very close study I have bestowed upon the problems so interesting and absorbing which the recent changes in that country have brought into prominence. Book excerpt: The Making and Remaking of China’s “Red Classics” is the first full-length work to bring together research on the “red classics” across the entire Maoist period through to the reform era. It covers a representative range of genres including novels, short stories, films, TV series, picture books, animation, and traditional-style paintings. Collectively, the chapters offer a panoramic view of the production and reception of the original “red classics” and the adaptations and remakes of such works after the Cultural Revolution. The contributors present fascinating stories of how a work came to be regarded as, or failed to become, a “red classic.” There has never been a single answer to the question of what counts as a “red classic”; artists had to negotiate the changing political circumstances and adopt the correct artistic technique to bring out the authentic image of the people, while appealing to the taste of the mass audience at the same time. A critical examination of these works reveals their sociopolitical and ideological import, aesthetic significance, and function as a mass cultural phenomenon at particular historical moments. This volume marks a step forward in the growing field of the study of Maoist cultural products. “The Making and Remaking of China’s ‘Red Classics’ analyzes the creation of literature in the Maoist era as well as the way in which the revolutionary canon was rediscovered and imagined during the reform period. This book is a timely and fascinating set of studies, critically illuminating a foundational time during PRC history and its aftermath.” —Wendy Larson, professor emerita, University of Oregon “Creative works produced in the Mao era (1942–1976) are often dismissed as mere propaganda. Despite the fact that they are artistic reflections of that remarkable period, scholars have generally ignored these ‘red classics.’ This book throws much needed light on them. It is a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the cultural scene in China.” —Kam Louie, honorary professor, University of Hong Kong and UNSW, Australia

Book excerpt: Excerpt from China of the Chinese The above general plan, with its broad outlines, represents neither the popular nor the academical method of viewing Chinese history. The former pictures a misty past, in which figures of the great Patriarchs and great Sages, the Builder Of the Great Wall and Burner of Books, with here and there a chivalrous hero, are dimly discerned, and later epochs, of which the knowledge is also misty, known as Augustan Ages of Chinese literature and poetry, all of which are completely overshadowed by the modern periods of foreign intercourse and foreign wars, openings for trade and robbing of territory which, though of historical value, are accorded too large a space in the picture to constitute it a properly proportioned representation of the whole of Chinese history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Remaking Chinese America, Xiaojian Zhao explores the myriad forces that changed and unified Chinese Americans during a key period in American history. Prior to 1940, this immigrant community was predominantly male, but between 1940 and 1965 it was transformed into a family-centered American ethnic community. Zhao pays special attention to forces both inside and outside of the country in order to explain these changing demographics. She scrutinizes the repealed exclusion laws and the immigration laws enacted after 1940. Careful attention is also paid to evolving gender roles, since women constituted the majority of newcomers, significantly changing the sex ratio of the Chinese American population. As members of a minority sharing a common cultural heritage as well as pressures from the larger society, Chinese Americans networked and struggled to gain equal rights during the cold war period. In defining the political circumstances that brought the Chinese together as a cohesive political body, Zhao also delves into the complexities they faced when questioning their personal national allegiances. Remaking Chinese America uses a wealth of primary sources, including oral histories, newspapers, genealogical documents, and immigration files to illuminate what it was like to be Chinese living in the United States during a period that--until now--has been little studied.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Things Chinese: Being Notes on Various Subjects Connected With China Nearly forty years spent in China have given the author many opportunities of observing and studying the Chinese in almost every aspect of their life and character, and, while indebted to other writers as well, he has largely availed himself of these personal observations and experiences in the production of this book. The first appearance of Mr Basil Hall Chamberlain's 'things Japanese' gave rise to the idea of 'things Chinese, ' until now, in the words of that author in the Preface to his Fourth Edition of 'things Japanese' (for edition after edition of it and 'things Chinese' have been issued nearly parz' passu), 'in the un likely event of anyone instituting a minute comparison between this edition and its predecessor, he would find minor alterations innumerable - here a line erased, there a paragraph added, or again a figure changed, a statement qualified, a description or a list brought up to date, even a score (or two or more) of completely new articles inserted. But take it altogether, the book remains the same as heretofore.' So the same may be said of this Fourth Edition of 'things Chinese.' A word here, a line there, now a clause, then a term struck out, a phrase deleted, or sentence altered - all have had their share in making it necessary to put the word 'revised' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
