Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From live productions of the 1950s like Requiem for a Heavyweight to big budget mini-series like Band of Brothers, long-form television programs have been helmed by some of the most creative and accomplished names in directing. Encyclopedia of Television Film Directors brings attention to the directors of these productions, citing every director of stand alone long-form television programs: made for TV movies, movie-length pilots, mini-series, and feature-length anthology programs, as well as drama, comedy, and musical specials of more than 60 minutes. Each of the nearly 2,000 entries provides a brief career sketch of the director, his or her notable works, awards, and a filmography. Many entries also provide brief discussions of key shows, movies, and other productions. Appendixes include Emmy Awards, DGA Awards, and other accolades, as well as a list of anthology programs. A much-needed reference that celebrates these often-neglected artists, Encyclopedia of Television Film Directors is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the history of the medium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987. Contemporary psychology is increasingly diversified, pluralistic, and specialized, and most psychologists venture beyond the confines of their substantive specialty only rarely. Yet psychologists with different specialties encounter similar problems, ask similar questions, and share similar concerns. Unfortunately, there are very few arenas available for the expression or exploration of what is common across psychological subdisciplines. The Crosscurrents in Contemporary Psychology series is intended to serve as such a forum. The chief aim of this series is to provide integrated perspectives on supradisciplinary themes in psychology. Despite its contemporary diversity and high degree of specialization, psychology embraces many phenomena that are of interest across subdisciplines largely because of the generality and ubiquity of those phenomena. The sensitive period is one. Sensitivity to different kinds of experience varies over the life cycle of an organism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Piano Solo Songbook). "I think there is a similarity between the infinite big and the infinite smallness of everything," says Yann Tiersen. "It's the same experiment looking through a microscope as it is a telescope." Named after a chapel in a small village on the island of Ushant, Kerber marks a new chapter in critically-acclaimed composer Yann Tiersen's career. A chapter still true to Tiersen's nuanced and subtle approach but one that sets out with his most overtly electronic material to date. Beautifully textured, highly immersive and thoughtfully constructed, Tiersen creates an electronic world, providing an environment in which the piano source exists. A sense of place has often been a central theme in Tiersen's work and here that is no different. Each track is tied to a place mapping out the immediate landscape that surrounds Tiersen's home, linking back to his thoughts on the possibilities of the infinite smallness. This official, exclusive folio is beautifully printed on high-quality, uncoated paper with striking graphic artwork. All seven pieces are presented for solo piano and follow an exclusive introduction to the project.

Book excerpt: Lamin Fofana: Blues is a publication coinciding with the debut New York solo exhibition by Sierra Leone-born, Berlin-based musician and artist Lamin Fofana at the Mishkin Gallery. Fofana's music is a conduit for engaging with an array of issues involving blackness, migration, displacement, and race through collective listening. The exhibition centers on a trilogy of sound works comprising the albums Black Metamorphosis, Darkwater, and Blues that engage with seminal texts by Sylvia Wynter, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Amiri Baraka to reflect on historical and epistemological trajectories of contemporary social and political thought through the lens of Black Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new publication introduces Judy Watson's 2005 limited edition artist book a preponderance of aboriginal blood to a wider readership. Judy Watson heard Loris Williams' lecture 'CASTE-ING THE VOTE: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voting rights in Queensland' at The University of Queensland in 2005. In her lecture Williams, from the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy, spoke of the classifications of Aboriginal people used to determine their right to vote. The Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897 (Qld) - long title "An Act to make Provision for the Better Protection and Care of the Aboriginal and Half-caste Inhabitants of the Colony, and to make more Effectual Provision for Restricting the Sale and Distribution of Opium". The Act categorised 'Persons deemed to be aboriginals' in Section 4 as: (a) An aboriginal inhabitant of Queensland; or (b) A half-caste who, at the commencement of this Act, is living with an aboriginal as wife, husband, or child; or (c) A half-caste who, otherwise than as wife, husband, or child, habitually lives or associates with aboriginals;shall be deemed to be an aboriginal within the meaning of this Act.The phrase a preponderance of aboriginal blood appears in one of these documents, and provided Watson with the title for her artist book. The Acting Assistant Director of Native Affairs used the term in his letter dated 9 December 1949 replying to Mrs H. Tyson, who had sought the right to enrol to vote for herself and her husband. He stated, "The State Electoral Act provides that persons having a preponderance of aboriginal blood are not eligible to vote, and the fact that such persons hold Exemption Certificates does not alter the matter in any way."
