Book Synopsis Undoing the Knots by : Maureen O'Connell
Download or read book Undoing the Knots written by Maureen O'Connell and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A personal and historical examination of white Catholic anti-Blackness in the US told through 5 generations of one family, and a call for meaningful racial healing and justice within Catholicism Excavating her Catholic family’s entanglements with race and racism from the time they immigrated to America to the present, Maureen O’Connell traces, by implication, how the larger Catholic population became white and why, despite the tenets of their faith, so many white Catholics have lukewarm commitments to racial justice. O’Connell was raised by devoutly Catholic parents with a clear moral and civic guiding principle: those to whom much is given, much is expected. She became a theologian steeped in social ethics, engaged in critical race theory, and trained in the fundamentals of anti-racism. And still she found herself failing to see how her well-meaning actions affected the Black members of her congregations. It seemed that whenever she tried to undo the knots of racism, she only ended up getting more tangled in them. Undoing the Knots weaves together narrative history, theology, and critical race theory to begin undoing these knots: to move away from doing good and giving back and toward dismantling the white Catholic identity and the economic and social structures it has erected and maintained.

Book Synopsis A Chaos of Kittens Meets a Knot of Toads by : Ruth Anderson Lawler
Download or read book A Chaos of Kittens Meets a Knot of Toads written by Ruth Anderson Lawler and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Chaos of Kittens Meets a Knot of Toads tells a story using unique terms to describe groups of animals. Some of these terms are almost 1,000 years old, having been made up by English and Frenchmen, mostly sportsmen and hunters on horseback, during the French conquest of England starting in 1066. Some familiar terms, such as a gaggle of geese, are still in use today, but these forgotten names are so entertaining, modern readers will be delighted to see them used again. The chaos takes place in the imaginary land of Critter Crowds, where the kittens have brought about the misery of indigestion and burping among the knot of toads and smack of jellyfish at the toad pond. The noise being made and the pebbles being kicked into the pond by the kittens at play have caused a hearing to be called by a parliament of owls who select a jury of six, one purple dragon, two mice, and three wombats to decide what to do about it. A pounce of cats arrive to defend the kittens, followed in part by an unkindness of ravens, a leap of leopards, and a crash of rhinoceros all trying to help. Soon the hearing becomes too loud for anyone to decide who is at fault or how to fix it. When their leader, the lion McNabb, shows up, everyone learns that by working together with a good plan and orderly cooperation, their problems can be solved.

In 1985, she reconstructed Chief Kotlean's robe, using information she had gathered from her study of the actual robes and Tikhanov's paintings. In the process, she resurrected an old weaving style no longer used by the Native people on the northern coast. Through her extensive and careful research, Cheryl Samuel makes an important contribution to the knowledge of early Indian weaving.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Literature, Criticism and Theory by : Andrew Bennett
Download or read book An Introduction to Literature, Criticism and Theory written by Andrew Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lively, original and highly readable, An Introduction to Literature, Criticism and Theory is the essential guide to literary studies. Starting at ‘The Beginning’ and concluding with ‘The End’, chapters range from the familiar, such as ‘Character’, ‘Narrative’ and ‘The Author’, to the more unusual, such as ‘Secrets’, ‘Pleasure’ and ‘Ghosts’. Now in its fifth edition, Bennett and Royle’s classic textbook successfully illuminates complex ideas by engaging directly with literary works, so that a reading of Jane Eyre opens up ways of thinking about racial difference, for example, while Chaucer, Raymond Chandler and Monty Python are all invoked in a discussion of literature and laughter. The fifth edition has been revised throughout and includes four new chapters – ‘Feelings’, ‘Wounds’, ‘Body’ and ‘Love’ – to incorporate exciting recent developments in literary studies. In addition to further reading sections at the end of each chapter, the book contains a comprehensive bibliography and a glossary of key literary terms. A breath of fresh air in a field that can often seem dry and dauntingly theoretical, this book will open the reader’s eyes to the exhilarating possibilities of reading and studying literature.

Book Synopsis Mindreading Animals by : Robert W. Lurz
Download or read book Mindreading Animals written by Robert W. Lurz and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals live in a world of other minds, human and nonhuman, and their well-being and survival often depends on what is going on in the minds of these other creatures. But do animals know that other creatures have minds? And how would we know if they do? In Mindreading Animals, Robert Lurz offers a fresh approach to the hotly debated question of mental-state attribution in nonhuman animals. Some empirical researchers and philosophers claim that some animals are capable of anticipating other creatures' behaviors by interpreting observable cues as signs of underlying mental states; others claim that animals are merely clever behavior-readers, capable of using such cues to anticipate others' behaviors without interpreting them as evidence of underlying mental states. Lurz argues that neither position is compelling and proposes a way to move the debate, and the field, forward. Lurz offers a bottom-up model of mental-state attribution that is built on cognitive abilities that animals are known to possess rather than on a preconceived view of the mind applicable to mindreading abilities in humans. Lurz goes on to describe an innovative series of new experimental protocols for animal mindreading research that show in detail how various types of animals -- from apes to monkeys to ravens to dogs -- can be tested for perceptual state and belief attribution.
