Book Synopsis The Raven's Feather: A Story for Children (Classic Reprint) by : Christian Gottlob Barth
Download or read book The Raven's Feather: A Story for Children (Classic Reprint) written by Christian Gottlob Barth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Raven's Feather: A Story for Children One beautiful afternoon in May, in the year 1780, a boy, fifteen years of age, was standing on Blackfriars' Bridge, in London, gazing intently on the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral, in its immediate vicinity. A fresh east wind had driven away the smoky clouds which usually hover over the city, and the sun was just setting in the west over St. James's. The boy was cleanly but poorly clothed, and looked pale and wan, as if he had had but little food; and such was really the case. His father, a German mechanic, had come to London to seek employment. After many fruitless endeavours, he at last succeeded, but in less than six months died. His mother had died in Germany some time before; and poor Severin, the only child, was now quite alone in a foreign land. His father had only left sufficient money to allow of his being decently buried, and the few friends he had acquired during his short stay in London had neither the means nor the inclination to take care of the orphan boy. For three days he had not had a regular meal, and he felt thankful that a kind-hearted baker had once given him a small piece of bread. But poor Severin had learned what many rich people do not understand, he had learned to pray. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The owner has hardly eaten for weeks. His skin has loosened on his face. He remembers leaving the door unlocked now. His inner demon has lost none of its cunning. There is no hope of controlling himself. The events that follow leave Elizabeth traumatised, the house empty, and Bernard lost. All Elizabeth has left is a raven’s feather, which she presents to Bernard’s father, Huginn Raaf. His eyes widen and he tells her, “I’ve been looking for a raven.” Ten years pass, years in which Elizabeth lives with the certain knowledge that there are monsters in the world and they will consume you if you do not adequately protect yourself. To that end, she learns all she can of the magical nature of the world. Huginn Raaf becomes a mentor to her, though a distant one. He encourages Elizabeth in her studies, sending her books on mythology, mysticism and science. Now she sends a letter to him, explaining that she feels anxious and suspects she is being followed. Huginn returns to Amsterdam, but events soon begin to spiral out of their control. Elizabeth must solve a mystery that is centuries old, and face a darkness that haunts her. She vows she will destroy it. But how can she, when doing so threatens to unleash an even greater power? A force that could see all Amsterdam devoured in flames.

Book excerpt: In the aftermath of Ireland’s battle with her ancient enemies, Queen Isolde orders her cousin, smuggler Duncan O’Malley, to assume the throne of fairy as King Finvara. He’s a fish out of water when it comes to nurturing the alliance between Ireland’s mortal and fairy peoples. And the queen wants him to wed the daughter of Ireland’s enemy, the king of Icelandic shadow elves, to help keep the peace. But the Irish think of the elves as goblins, and Finvara refuses. Elven princess Koli, affronted by the king’s rejection—along with his decision to bring her to court as little more than a captive—vows vengeance. Shortly after her arrival, she uncovers a plot that would bring swift satisfaction. A dark and powerful fairy lord, Far Dorocha, wants to take Finvara’s crown and lead both the fairy and elven people to war against the Irish. And he wants Koli to help him. It’s the perfect setup for revenge, but Koli soon discovers that Finvara’s not the haughty lord she believed him to be. And as she navigates treacherous waters inside the court, she gets glimpses of the magic and passion that have been slumbering inside her. She must choose a side in the new battle for Ireland—will it be the fearsome father she has served for nearly a century, or the fairy king who has helped awaken her to herself?

Book excerpt: Quetico Park in northwestern Ontario celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2009. Long-recognized as a gem among parks, Quetico contains some of the largest stands of old-growth red and white pine in Canada , as well as a diversity of fascinating lichens, carnivorous plants in specialized habitats. The author presents an insightful look into Quetico’s natural history as he examines the adapations that have allowed moose, white-tailed deer, wolves and other mammals to survive. The human history of the park is also explored, beginning with the Objiwa living there when the area was designated as a park, followed by accounts of trappers, loggers, miners, park rangers, and poachers. Beginning with the retreat of the glaciers, the author combines his thorough research into Quetico’s long and varied history with the threads of his own extensive involvement with the park. The result is a splendid tribute to a very special place.

Book Synopsis Johnny Kingdom's West Country Tales by : Johnny Kingdom
Download or read book Johnny Kingdom's West Country Tales written by Johnny Kingdom and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few people better acquainted with the West Country than Johnny Kingdom. His knowledge of local wildlife is second to none, but he's also a fount of knowledge when it comes to all the old stories that get passed down from generation to generation. West Country Tales is a charming collection of these local myths and legends, interwoven with many more anecdotes from Johnny himself and his forbears and friends. The atmospheric West Country landscape lends itself perfectly to dramatic tales of eerie hauntings and ghostly happenings, daring smugglers and dashing highwaymen, and many have heard of - or might even have seen - the modern-day legend that is the Beast of Exmoor. But what about the Flying Fish of Exmoor, a slippery catch of Johnny's that sailed up and over a bridge into the back seat of a passing open-top car, never to be seen again? Gently humorous and wonderfully evocative, it's only a matter of time before some of Johnny's own tales weave their way into West Country lore.
