Now, as it's bearer, Domek wields its power, but the wisp, known for leading travellers to their deaths, will not be so easily controlled. After discovering a conspiracy amongst the pijavice that could see them unleash terror on the daylight world, Domek finds himself in a race against those who aim to twist alchemical science for their own dangerous gain.
Download or read book Werewolves written by Bob Curran and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us are familiar with the idea of a werewolf—that someone can change, either deliberately or unwillingly, into a ravenous creature—but is there some justification for such a belief? And if so, how is it achieved—through magical potions or ointments or simply by the light of the full moon? Or is the whole thing simply a form of delusion, the product of a disturbed mind? In Werewolves, author Dr. Bob Curran examines the deep psychological perceptions about the linkage of man with the natural, bestial world. Do the roots of such a belief lie in the supernatural world, or are there other explanations? How has the discovery of feral children, living in the wild, shaped our ideas of human-beasts? And what is the future of such beliefs? The book considers genetically-based speculations regarding the possible fusion of human and animal genes in order to alleviate some human diseases and suffering. Is the idea of man into beast really so far fetched? Werewolves is an essential reference book which looks, in depth, at a fascinating subject. One word of warning though: it must never be read under the baleful rays of a full moon. You have been warned!

Book Synopsis Constructions of Cancer in Early Modern England by : Alanna Skuse
Download or read book Constructions of Cancer in Early Modern England written by Alanna Skuse and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC-BY licence. Cancer is perhaps the modern world's most feared disease. Yet, we know relatively little about this malady's history before the nineteenth century. This book provides the first in-depth examination of perceptions of cancerous disease in early modern England. Looking to drama, poetry and polemic as well as medical texts and personal accounts, it contends that early modern people possessed an understanding of cancer which remains recognizable to us today. Many of the ways in which medical practitioners and lay people imagined cancer – as a 'woman's disease' or a 'beast' inside the body – remain strikingly familiar, and they helped to make this disease a byword for treachery and cruelty in discussions of religion, culture and politics. Equally, cancer treatments were among the era's most radical medical and surgical procedures. From buttered frog ointments to agonizing and dangerous surgeries, they raised abiding questions about the nature of disease and the proper role of the medical practitioner.

Download or read book Myths & Legends written by J.K. Jackson and published by Flame Tree 451. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creation myths, quests, the eternal battle between good and evil, these are some of the classic tales that feed the ravenous beast of modern culture. For many the classical traditions of the Greeks and the Romans occupy the imagination but the ancient world was a lively and fertile source of stories, reaching much further back than the pantheon of Zeus and his fellow gods. For the early civilisations, from the ancient Chinese to African tribal societies, stories were told to explain the origins of fierce weather, of unexplained disasters, of floods and earthquakes. Many traditions developed independently but still echoed similar themes in the natural human desire to understand the world around us. This new book brings to life the myths and legends of eight intriguing traditions: Native American, Chinese, Celtic, Scottish, Greek, Viking, Indian and African. With a cast of characters as broad and wide as the ancient river Styx the book is packed with the great themes of life: love, revenge, eternal conflict, the obsession with power and the everlasting the battle between the wily and the strong. This powerful new book is a dazzling collection of the most gripping tales, vividly retold.

Download or read book The Venom Spell written by Ethan M. Kleinhans and published by Bookbaby. This book was released on 2016-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The In-betweens are a peculiar kind; cursed with body parts that resemble those of animals, they are considered less than human in the eyes of the Church, and live only as slaves, bound to the service of farmers all throughout the Holy Kingdom. Alistair knows their plight well. As though he were a slave himself, his father forces him to work beside them, from dawn til dusk. But one night, while stargazing, a bright light comes crashing down outside of his otherwise peaceful home, and reveals itself to be a ravenous beast hell-bent on killing him. The boy fends it off, but sustains a bite containing the beast's potent venom. In search of a cure, Alistair is torn from his old life, thrust into a whole new world and pitted against his homeland, overtaken by a mad religion that now wants his head. With the help of a slave-girl named Wolf, they'll have to mount a desperate race to the border, and even if they survive, they might just find that freedom is hardly ever free. The debut novel of Ethan M. Kleinhans, The Venom Spell ventures into the controversial topics of race and religion, and asks, quite simply, if there is a difference between being human, and being a person.
