Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rationale of Market Fluctuations IN my endeavour to preach not political economy, but business, I may in these pages have run into a style of literature tacitly considered as immoral even by those who practice the very system I desire to preach. In one word, this book may be taken as encouraging speculation by recognising it. If so, I must accept the consequences without attempting beforehand to defend speculation except on its own apparent merits. That it has merits all must allow and the more readily will the value of speculation - its value to the nation as much as to the merchant - be admitted, if my readers will be so good as to separate in their own minds speculation from mere gambling. In the one case men conduct business with their eyes open; in the other they rush blindly into Operations without considering the pros and cons. This book attempts to show broadly the considerations to which a man's eyes should be open when engaging in such operations, and it cannot therefore be accused of encouraging mere gambling. National morality must not consider itself attacked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Volatility of Stock Market Prices This paradigm has several advantages: The partial equilibrium micro studies cited earlier ignore the interaction of consumption growth and interest rates. Implicitly assuming their in dependence. In contrast, the neoclassical growth model explicitly captures their interaction. Secondly. Examining aggregate values relative to National Income is natural in this theoret ical setting since detrending is not a problem as these series appear to be co-integrated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Importance of Investor Heterogeneity and Financial Market Imperfections for the Behavior of Asset Prices In this section we present a series of incomplete market models in order to systematically show how various forms of market frictions can affect predicted asset prices. In particular, we investigate the effects of non-contractable shocks to individual income, the persistence and conditional volatility of these individual shocks, borrowing and short sales constraints, and transactions costs in asset markets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dividend Behavior for the Aggregate Stock Market In a series of stimulating papers (198la, l98lb, and Robert Shiller uses seemingly powerful variance bounds tests to show that variations in aggregate stock market prices are much too large to be justified by the variation in subsequent dividend payments. Under the assumption that the real expected return on the market remains essentially constant over time, Shiller concludes that the excess variation in stock prices identified in his tests provides strong evidence to reject the Efficient Market Hypothesis. Even if the real expected return on the market does change over time, Shiller further concludes that the amount of variation in that rate necessary to save the Efficient Market Hypothesis is so large that the measured excess variation in stock prices cannot be attributed to this source. We need hardly mention the significance of such a conclusion. If Shiller's rejection of market efficiency is sustained, then serious doubt is cast on the validity of the most important cornerstone of modern financial economic theory. To be sure, of the hundreds of earlier tests of efficient markets, there have been a few which appear to reject market efficiency [cf. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial crisis of 2008 and subsequent Great Recession demolished many cherished beliefs—most significantly, the theory that financial markets always get things right. Justin Fox's The Myth of the Rational Market explains where that idea came from, and where it went wrong. As much an intellectual whodunit as a cultural history of the perils and possibilities of risk, it also brings to life the people and ideas that forged modern finance and investing—from the formative days of Wall Street through the Great Depression and into the financial calamities of today. It's a tale featuring professors who made and lost fortunes, battled fiercely over ideas, beat the house at blackjack, wrote bestselling books, and played major roles on the world stage. It's also a story of free-market capitalism's war with itself.
