Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rare Earths: Their Occurrence, Chemistry, and Technology Though the nature of the matter embraced has rendered the division into three parts desirable, the whole subject has been treated primarily from the chemical standpoint. In view, however, of the occurrence of considerable quantities of monazite within the British Empire, and of the possibility that in the near future the Brazilian fields will not remain the sole source of thorium nit-rate, stress has been laid on the technical aspect, which is more especially developed as regards the production of monazite and the incandescent mantle industry in Chapters VII and XVII - XX. Book excerpt: This book deals with the rare earth elements (REE), which are a series of 17 transition metals: scandium, yttrium and the lanthanide series of elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium and lutetium). They are relatively unknown to the wider public, despite their numerous applications and their critical role in many high-tech applications, such as high-temperature superconductors, phosphors (for energy-saving lamps, flat-screen monitors and flat-screen televisions), rechargeable batteries (household and automotive), very strong permanent magnets (used for instance in wind turbines and hard-disk drives), or even in a medical MRI application. This book describes the history of their discovery, the major REE ore minerals and the major ore deposits that are presently being exploited (or are planned to be exploited in the very near future), the physical and chemical properties of REEs, the mineral processing of REE concentrates and their extractive metallurgy, the applications of these elements, their economic aspects and the influential economical role of China, and finally the recycling of the REE, which is an emerging field.

Book excerpt: The Fifteenth Rare Earth Research Conference was held June 15-18, 1981 on the Rolla campus of th.e University of Missouri. The conference was hosted by the Graduate Center for Materials Research, the College of Arts and Science, and the School of Mines and Metallurgy. It was expected that the conference would provide a forum for critical examination and review of the current and important trends in rare earth science and technology. To this end, over 170 papers were presented in both oral and poster sessions by researchers representing some nineteen countries. The program committee was particularly gratified to see the diversity of effort being devoted to rare earth research by different disciplines allover the world. The collection of refereed papers in this volume attests to the fact that the objectives of the program committee were indeed realized. A high point of the meeting was the presentation of the Frank n. Spedding Award to a most distinguished colleague, Professor Georg Busch, Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule, Zurich. Prof essor W. Edward hi"allace, University of Pittsburgh, recipient of the first Frank H. Spedding Award made the presentation to Professor Busch who then gave the Plenary Address.

Book excerpt: The Fourteenth Rare Earth Research Conference was held June 25- 28, 1979, at North Dakota State University in Fargo. The meeting was hosted by the College of Science and Mathematics and the Depart ment of Physics. Since the first conference was held in 1960, sub sequent meetings have grown in size and prestige to become one of the leading international forums devoted to disseminating new infor mation relative to rare earth science and technology. The meeting in Fargo was one of the largest yet held. The Program Committee scheduled over 160 papers repres~nting colleagues from 18 countries in both oral and poster sessions that - cluded Spectroscopy (Luminescence, Fluorescence, Laser, Mossbauer, ESR); Metallurgy and Materials Preparation; Solution, Solvation and Analytical Chemistry; X-ray and Neutron Diffraction; Transport and Thermal Properties; Hydrides; Magnetism; and Rare Earth Technology. A first and special event which the organizers hope to perpet uate at future meetings was to announce the recipient of the rare earth prize, hereafter called the Frank H. Spedding Award. Governor Arthur A. Link, State of North Dakota, on behalf of the Selection Committee, presented Professor Frank H. Spedding with a special citation. Professor Spedding spoke briefly and introduced the first recipient, Professor W. Edward Wallace from the University of Pitts burgh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rare Elements examines the geological and geochemical aspects of rare elements and describes the different means of recovering them from their natural sources, from semi-finished products and from industrial wastes. After a chapter on the geology and geochemistry of different types of mineral deposits, further chapters deal with the mechanical and chemical beneficiation of ores, and chlorination in rare metals recovery. The theoretical and practical aspects of solvent extraction in connection with the recovery of rare elements are dealt with in great detail in a chapter which reviews a large number of extraction systems and is illustrated by forty solvent extraction diagrams. The final chapter describe pyro- and hydro-metallurgical procedures for recovering the individual elements from their sources, especially from those containing very small or even trace quantities. The value of the book lies in the fact that much of the text is devoted to the hydrometallurgical and solvent extraction techniques used to recover rare elements from sources hitherto regarded as commercially unviable, e.g. from low-content natural sources and from industrial wastes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to use rare earths successfully in various applications, a good understanding of the chemistry of these elements is of paramount importance. Nearly three to four decades have passed since titles such as The Rare Earths edited by F.H. Spedding and A.H. Daane, The chemistry of the Rare Earth Elements by N.E. Topp and Complexes of the Rare Earths by S.P. Sinha were published. There have been many international conferences and symposia on rare earths, as well as the series of volumes entitled Handbook of Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths edited by K.A. Gschneidner and L. Eyring. Thus, there is a need for a new title covering modern aspects of rare earth complexes along with the applications. The present title consists of twelve chapters. 1. Introduction 2. General aspects 3. Stability of complexes 4. Lanthanide complexes 5. Structural chemistry of lanthanide compounds 6. Organometallic complexes 7. Kinetics and mechanisms of rare earths complexation 8. Spectroscopy of lanthanide complexes 9. Photoelectron spectroscopy of rare earths 10. Lanthanide NMR shift reagents 11. Environmental ecological biological aspects 12. Applications The authors studied in schools headed by pioneers in rare earth chemistry, have a combined experience of one hundred and fifty years in inorganic chemistry, rare earth complex chemistry, nuclear and radiochemistry of rare earths and supramolecular chemistry. The present monograph is a product of this rich experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and Technology of Rare Earth Materials reviews the important aspects of the science and technology of rare earth materials, covering the entire spectrum from occurrence to extraction and purification, phase relationships, electronic structure, and applications. This book is organized into five sections encompassing 19 chapters. The occurrence, extraction, and production of rare earths are discussed in the first section, followed by purification methods employed for rare earths, together with the role of impurities on their behavior. The phase relations among the rare earth alloys, including a particular reference to the technologically important rare earth-cobalt alloys, and phase relations among the rare earth oxides are considered in the second section. The succeeding two sections focus on studies of the electronic structure of rare earth materials, with emphasis on the use of nuclear magnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Theoretical conceptions are set forth as well as the effect of crystal fields and valence fluctuations on the properties of rare earth systems. The final section describes some of the extensive current uses of rare earth materials such as in the steel industry and in permanent magnets, as well as emerging applications in catalysis, hydrogen storage, ferroelectrics, and fast ion conductors. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and students interested in rare earths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth and development witnessed today in modern science, engineering, and technology owes a heavy debt to the rare, refractory, and reactive metals group, of which niobium is a member. Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium presents a vivid account of the metal through its comprehensive discussions of properties and applications, resources and resource processing, chemical processing and compound preparation, metal extraction, and refining and consolidation. Typical flow sheets adopted in some leading niobium-producing countries for the beneficiation of various niobium sources are presented, and various chemical processes for producing pure forms of niobium intermediates such as chloride, fluoride, and oxide are discussed. The book also explains how to liberate the metal from its intermediates and describes the physico-chemical principles involved. It is an excellent reference for chemical metallurgists, hydrometallurgists, extraction and process metallurgists, and minerals processors. It is also valuable to a wide variety of scientists, engineers, technologists, and students interested in the topic.
