Book excerpt: This is the story of the characters and circumstances surrounding the wildest college football game ever played: Georgia Tech's 222-0 victory over little Cumberland University on Oct. 7, 1916, in Atlanta. Cumberland dropped football after a disastrous 1915 season in which it was outscored by an aggregate 276-0 in five games. But Cumberland beat the Georgia Tech baseball team 22-0 by illegally using a half dozen professional players. Coach John Heisman, who coached the Tech baseball and football teams, discovered that Cumberland had not formally cancelled its contract to play Tech in football in 1916. Heisman, looking for revenge, insisted the game be played or Cumberland would have to pay Tech a $3,000 forfeit fee (a huge sum at the time). Cumberland wanted to avoid the costly forfeiture fee so it told the school's young sports team's managers, George Allen, to somehow come up with a team to play Tech. Allen's adventures in putting together a bunch of misfits and finding a coach result in some hilarious moments. The game itself also included numerous humorous situations.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Born to Run, a heartwarming story about training a rescue donkey to run one of the most challenging races in America, and, in the process, discovering the life-changing power of the human-animal connection. "A delight, full of heart and hijinks and humor." —John Grogan, author of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog When Christopher McDougall decided to adopt a donkey in dire straits, he had no idea what he was getting himself into. But with the help of his neighbors, Chris came up with a crazy idea. Burro racing, a unique type of competition in which humans and donkeys run side by side over mountains and through streams, would be exactly the challenge Sherman and Chris needed. In the course of Sherman’s training, Chris would enlist Amish running clubs, high-spirited goats, the service animal community, and two Sarah Palin–loving long-distance female truckers. Sherman’s heartwarming story of overcoming all odds to run one of the most unbelievable races in America shows the healing power of movement and the strength of the human-animal connection. Look for Christopher McDougall's new book, Born to Run 2, coming in December!

Given her moderate political stance and connectedness within Tellmondo's political scene, Ninna is recruited by an agent of the super-conglomerate, international body called the Erth Industrial AllianceEIA. Gordon, the agent, is Ninthoosas handler and convinces her to spy against a group of underworld gangsters that range from a very rich old man who is a representative of the Erth Industrial Alliance to a radical student president of a terroristic, Tellmondonian organization called The Covenant of the Belt. Despite her juggles of espionage between Erth and Mars, Ninna still has to focus her main efforts against a prominent Tellmondonian official: Respect PunJon. The Respect is of a new generation of Tellmondonian nationalism and endeavors to re-establish the city-state of Tellmondo among the Sol system's asteroid belt. But the young Respect does this at the expense of Human lives and economic corruption! Ninna finds herself in a world of cloak and dagger, mixed in with a solar system-wide intrigue that snarls trusted friends and even her heart... Asteropia is a different Sci-Fi adventure. It is a mixture of sublime scientific and technological speculation, political intrigue, and street-smart Mafia-style plots.

Book excerpt: Did you ever wonder, 'How did I get here?' It's a question most people have asked themselves and usually ask when they wish they weren't there. Life led Michael Secli to the Battle of Khe Sanh in Viet Nam, 1968. History tells us a small band of Marines, seven miles from the Laotian border, along Route 9, the northern most road across Vietnam between the north and the south were outmanned yet were responsible for preventing the enemy from advancing. Did anybody really want to be there? The question was moot. It was their duty, and they would do whatever they could to keep the enemy from advancing. It was David against Goliath, and we know how that turned out. How did Michael get there? Well, that's an important part of the story.

Book excerpt: I will never forget the look on my brother's face when that crazy monkey came flying through the air and landed on his chest! All of a sudden the only thing Paul saw was four long hairy legs with a set of sharp fangs sailing through the air straight at him! However, I still think the Skunk story outdoes that one or maybe, "The Train" was paramount. No matter what, Johny thought to himself I have to get my sorry butt up and get this stuff on paper before I get distracted by life again. "Looking Back" is actually a story written by Shelly Owens-McKinney. It is about her favorite person in the entire world, her Uncle Johny. He is ninety-three years, eleven months and twenty nine days old. This will be his last day, but before he goes, he gives Shelly so many memories that she will carry on to the next generation. There are so many beautiful recollections over the years. Johny fiercely misses Rebecca, his wife and longs to be with her.

Book excerpt: As a wedding consultant, who specializes in military weddings, I hear brides, who are trying to plan military weddings, lament about the lack of information available about military weddings. Even if hiring a wedding consultant to plan a military wedding, brides still want to know as much as possible about the planning considerations, traditions and etiquette. Most wedding planning and etiquette books briefly address military weddings, but not to the satisfaction of most military brides. There are situations that face the bride or groom marrying a military person that a civilian couple doesn't always have to face. So, this book, The Military Wedding, was written for the civilian bride marrying a military groom. It also addresses the civilian groom marrying a military woman and the military bride and groom. A few paragraphs, as found in most books, won't answer your questions. Consider this your military wedding planning manual or special operating instruction to supplement your main wedding planning guide.

Book excerpt: First released in 1987, Near Dark is a vampire film set in the contemporary American Midwest that tells the story of Caleb, a half-vampire trying to decide whether to embrace his vampire nature or return to his human family. The film, an early work of the now-established director Kathryn Bigelow, skilfully mixes genre conventions, combining gothic tropes with those of the Western, road movie and film noir, while also introducing elements of the outlaw romance genre. Stacey Abbott's study of the film addresses it as a genre hybrid that also challenges conventions of the vampire film. The vampires are morally ambiguous and undermine the class structures that have historically defined stories of the undead. These are not aristocrats but instead they capture the allure and horror of the disenfranchised and the underclass. As Abbott describes, Near Dark was crucial in consolidating Bigelow's standing as a director of significance at an early point in her career, not simply because of her visual art background, but because of the way in which she would from Near Dark onward re-envision other traditionally mainstream genres of filmmaking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the unstudied eye, St. Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. In his third volume of meditations on Matthew (chapters 19-25), Erasmo Leiva continues to show Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent, but rich with meaning. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the lay reader. The tone is very much of "taste and see how good the Lord is" and an invitation of "friend, come up higher!." The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart and the light of the divine Word. Leiva comments on the Greek text, demonstrating nuances in the text that defy translation. He uses numerous quotes from the Fathers and the Liturgy of the Church to demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Magdalene. We know from the way she is introduced to us from the Bible record that she had once been possessed by seven devils. This fact, more than any other, seems to be all that we know about her connection to Jesus, the Christ. We know that she appears quite unexpectedly at the cross of Jesus, and then at his tomb. We know that she alone was given the distinction of being the first to see the Christ alive from the dead. We know that Jesus gave her the remarkable charge to announce his resurrection to the world – in absolute accuracy of what He said he would do. We know that she was one of the twenty-five female disciples of Jesus, who sat at his feet and learned from his teachings. Yet, her identity and ministry are as baffling to us as her sudden appearance in the Holy scriptures. Mary of Magdala: Out of Whom Came Seven Devils, finally settles the current debate over Mary Magdalene’s true relationship to the Savior. The chapter, “From the Top to the Bottom,” describes what the Sanhedrin and the priests of the temple would have seen when, at the point of Jesus’ death, the Veil was ripped in two right before their eyes.... And clears up the misconception that the Ark of the Covenant was still existent at the time of Jesus. “Who Is My Mother?” provides much needed clarity as to why the natural brothers of Jesus refused to take possession of His Body after the crucifixion. When Jesus appeared to Mary at the tomb, the Bible says that she mistook Him for the gardener. Lovers of Biblical mystery will gain great insight from the chapter, “Who Rolled Away the Stone?” in answer to the question of why Jesus was not recognizable when He arose from the dead. “Traditions of the Fathers,” will once and for all, settle the question of Mary’s painful past, and how she came to be known as one of the most enviable of all of Jesus’ disciples.
