Book excerpt: Global activity has broadly strengthened and is expected to improve further in 2014–15, according to the April 2014 WEO, with much of the impetus for growth coming from advanced economies. Although downside risks have diminished overall, lower-than-expected inflation poses risks for advanced economies, there is increased financial volatility in emerging market economies, and increases in the cost of capital will likely dampen investment and weigh on growth. Advanced economy policymakers need to avoid a premature withdrawal of monetary accommodation. Emerging market economy policymakers must adopt measures to changing fundamentals, facilitate external adjustment, further monetary policy tightening, and carry out structural reforms. The report includes a chapter that analyzes the causes of worldwide decreases in real interest rates since the 1980s and concludes that global rates can be expected to rise in the medium term, but only moderately. Another chapter examines factors behind the fluctuations in emerging market economies’ growth and concludes that strong growth in China played a key role in buffering the effects of the global financial crisis in these economies.

The approach is as neutral as possible vis-à-vis the results, leading to a new forecasting model, the MASST model, built by the authors.

Book excerpt: This book aims to analyze how and why China takes a state-managed marketization approach (SMMA) to energy security against the backdrop of global efforts of decarbonization and intensified strategic competition between China and the United States. How, and why, does China's SMMA work? Taking an evolving, historical perspective, this book explores China’s perception of energy security, the policy process, institutional restructuring in China's petroleum industry, China's foreign energy quest, and the ramifications of the Chinese approach on the international energy market and on world decarbonization. To demonstrate to what extent China’s SMMA differs from other countries, it also makes a comparative analyses of the approaches by China, the US and India. This book will keenly interest scholars of the Chinese political economy, climate change, and geopolitics.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to shed light on how people come to hold opposing views, how these views solidify into the sides of a debate and how one side becomes the dominant view. Why, as all have access to the same nature, physical and human, don't they come to the same conclusions? Or, if each individual is different, why don't they come to wholly different conclusions? A sociology of perception must explain both why the world resembles neither an epistemological Tower of Babel in which communication between individuals is impossible nor a homogenized blend in which communication is no longer necessary. t

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, Africa has undergone the longest period of sustained economic growth in the continent’s history, drawing the attention of the international media and academics alike. This book analyses the Africa Rising narrative from multidisciplinary perspectives, offering a critical assessment of the explanations given for the poor economic growth and development performance in Africa prior to the millennium and the dramatic shift towards the new Africa. Bringing in perspectives from African intellectuals and scholars, many of whom have previously been overlooked in this debate, the book examines the construction of Africa’s economic growth and development portraits over the years. It looks at two institutions that play a vital role in African development, providing a detailed explanation of how the World Bank and the IMF have interpreted and dealt with the African challenges and experiences. The insightful analysis reveals that if Africa is rising, only 20-30 per cent of Africans are aboard the rising ship, and the main challenge facing the continent today is to bring on board the majority of Africans who have been excluded from growth. This book makes the complex, and sometimes confusing debates on Africa’s economic growth experience more accessible to a wide range of readers interested in the Africa story. It is essential reading for students and researchers in African Studies, and will be of great interest to scholars in Development Studies, Political Economy, and Development Economics.
