The authors present a quark confinement model to describe the low-energy physics of light hadrons. Hadrons are treated as collective colorless excitations of quark-gluon interactions while the quark confinement is to be provided by averaging over gluon backgrounds. The model is shown to reproduce the low-energy relations of chiral theory in the case of null momenta and, in addition, allow the researcher to obtain more sophisticated hadron characteristics, such as slope parameters and form factors. Phenomenological assumptions and first-principle theoretical results or indications have been combined. Many partial successes have been attained, but a unified and comprehensive treatment is still lacking.In recent years, new attention has been given to the problem, both in terms of theoretical developments and for the purpose of evaluating the spectrum and other properties of the particles. This volume collects his papers on quark confinement, showing the road he followed to arrive at the theory and formulating the theory itself. It begins with papers providing a beautiful physical explanation of asymptotic freedom based on the phenomenon of antiscreening and demonstrating the inconsistency of the standard perturbative treatment of the gluon fields (Gribov copies, Gribov horizon). It continues with papers presenting the Gribov theory according to which confinement of colour is determined by the existence of practically massless quarks. The last two papers conclude Gribov's twenty-year-long study of the problem; QCD is formulated as a quantum field theory containing both perturbative and nonperturbative phenomena, and the confinement is based on the supercritical binding of light quarks.

Book excerpt: This meeting on Hadron Spectroscopy and the Confinement Problem took place from June 27 to July 8, 1995. The first four days were at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London and the last six at the University College of Swansea, Wales. The reason for the split sites was a question of accomodating the 54 students and 12 lecturers. However, it was enjoyed by all concerned, providing the opportunity to sample the nightlife of London one week and enjoy the delightful coastal area around Swansea the following week. The meeting immediately preceded the Hadron '95 conference in Manchester. The contents of this volume run roughly parallel to the order of the lectures. Martin Faessler's brief and that of Madjid Boutemeur was to review experimental tech niques as well as physics results. We have tried to review all the areas which are currently active experimentally. This means mostly Light Meson Spectroscopy. However, Simon Capstick gave us a welcome review of Baryon Spectroscopy and the coming CEBAF program. This is an opportunity to thank NATO for their generous financial support, and also the two host institutions for excellent coordination and an enjoyable stay.

Book excerpt: One of the activities of the Ettore Majorana Centre for ,Scientific Culture is the international advanced study courses on scientific topics which are of particular relevance today. The Centre is located in Erice, a mountain town in the province of Trapani in Sicily. At present over seventy Schools of the Centre are active, holding annual or biennial courses, so that about forty courses are organized each year. To date some twenty thou sand participants have attended the courses of the various Schools of the Centre. The International Physics Workshop Series has been established to make the contents of the Workshops o'f great topical interest available to those who were unable to attend them. The courses are conducted on an advanced, post-doctoral level. This volume - the proceedings of the session on "Quarks and Hadronic Structure" - is the first of the Series. In September 1975, thirty-three physicists from twenty-one laboratories in nine countries met in Erice to attend the Workshop. The countries represented were: Austria, France, Germany, India, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The purpose of this Workshop was to bring to gether a group of theorists working on various aspects of the quark structure of hadrons to discuss and critically evaluate the present situation. Professor Morpurgo was given the direction of the Workshop. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him most warmly for having accepted this responsibility and for the success of the Work shop.
