Book excerpt: The attachment between mother and infant is the foundation for development of cognition and behavior. John Bowlby suggested that infants should experience a warm, intimate relationship with the mother so that enjoyment is felt by both to succeed in cognitive and behavioral development. However, certain factors such as socioeconomic status, symptoms of hostility, and symptoms of trauma negatively impact the attachment bond between mother and infant. Previous research studies have observed predictors of mother-infant attachment; however, research has not been conducted to collectively measure the association between socioeconomic status and symptoms of trauma experienced by the mother on the quality of attachment between mother and infant. We expected to find that despite the mother’s socioeconomic status, if the mother has experienced a traumatic event during childhood or adulthood or engaged in hostile behaviors, her symptoms of trauma and hostility would impact her maternal bond with her infant. Biological mothers of infants between the ages of two and five years completed questionnaires related to demographics and symptoms of trauma. Statistical analyses were conducted to measure the association between these factors. The outcome of the analyses, along with limitations of the study, will be discussed upon completion of the study. Results suggested nonsignificant relationships between mother-infant attachment, socioeconomic status, symptoms of hostility, and trauma, which are not consistent with previous research. Despite the lack of findings in this study, research should continue measuring the variables collectively to better understand how these predictors combined will impact mother-infant attachment.

Here is one more. There are many ways to tell a story. Our book, we think, tells it dif ferently enough to have made it worth the writing. As we began to talk, some time ago, about undertaking this project, we found we had a mutual interest in trying to present the study of social development from a histori cal point of view. The field has changed dramatically from its inception, and we have both been in it long enough to have witnessed first-hand a number of these changes. Modifications of theoretical orientations and the de velopment of increasingly sophisticated and rigorous methodology have brought with them the stimulation of controversy and growth, as social developmental psychologists argued about the best ways of going about their business. Certainly the same things have happened in other areas of psychology, but the arguments seem to have been particularly vigorous in our own domain.

However, little is known about the influence of coparenting quality on attachment. The goal of the present study was to examine the associations between parental perceptions of coparenting quality, quality of mothering, and infant-mother attachment. Parental reports of positive and negative coparenting quality, maternal emotional availability, and infant-mother attachment were assessed in 167 infants and their parents at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Direct and indirect effects were assessed within a structural equation modeling framework to examine: (a) direct effects of mother-reported coparenting on infant-mother attachment, (b) indirect effects of mother-reported coparenting on infant-mother attachment through the quality of mothering, and (c) indirect effects of father-reported coparenting on infant-mother attachment through the quality of mothering. Results revealed that there was an indirect, but not direct, association between mother-reported coparenting quality across the first year of life and infant-mother attachment at one year through maternal emotional availability across the first year. However, father-reported coparenting was not indirectly related to infant-mother attachment. Post hoc analyses revealed that mothers' perceptions of coparenting at 1 month were indirectly linked to attachment at one year through maternal emotional availability across the first year. Findings highlight the importance of coparenting quality, especially in the early postpartum, in organizing quality of parenting and infant attachment.

In Study 1, the process of attachment was examined from a developmental psychopathology perspective. In Study 2, an intervention program based on attachment theory was evaluated. The findings revealed a possible pathway to insecure attachment relationships, and provided a rationale for theory-based early prevention. Study 1 was cross-sectional and longitudinal with 68 high-risk mother-infant dyads (mean maternal age, 17.9 years). A multimethod approach including home observations, questionnaires, interviews, and coding of key episodes, was used to measure cognitive and socioemotional characteristics of the infants and different aspects of maternal interactive behaviour, at three developmental periods, in order to assess the quality of mother-infant interactions and to identify precursors to disordered functioning. Attachment relationships were assessed using the Strange Situation procedure. Data were collected on 39 dyads with 13-month-old infants, 54 dyads with 6-month-old infants, and 22 dyads with 3-month-old infants. Within the cross-sectional groups, data were available from two longitudinal samples: 22 dyads seen at 3 and 6 months, and 25 dyads seen at 6 and 13 months. Results showed that maternal sensitivity declined over the first year and 63% of the babies were insecurely attached at 13 months. Higher levels of sensitivity were associated with higher scores on stage-salient developmental tasks. Regression analyses revealed that sensitivity contributed to variability in attachment security; quality of social and emotional stimulation in the home, to variability in mental development; and quality of the mother's communication, to variability in language development. These findings suggest that sub-optimal mother-infant interactions may lead to difficulties in development since mastery of developmental issues at an earlier stage lays the foundation for subsequent competence. In Study 2, 45 dyads from the cross-sectional sample with 6-month-olds were randomly assigned to intervention (N = 22) and comparison (N = 23) groups. Data were collected at 6 and 13 months, as in Study 1. In between, intervention group mothers received bi-weekly training sessions aimed at improving mother-infant interactions through play. At 13 months, results showed the groups differed in maternal sensitivity. Sensitivity in the intervention group increased over the 7-month period whereas sensitivity in the comparison group decreased. Intervention infants had higher attachment-security scores (Attachment Behaviour Q-sort), than comparison infants, and a higher proportion were classified as securely attached (Strange Situation).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to better understand the relationship between drug exposed infants and their mothers and how this relationship may be associated with mental health outcomes for the child. Hypotheses predicted that drug exposed infants and their mothers would have more relationship impairment and a higher incidence of relationship disorders than non-drug exposed infants and their mothers. It was also hypothesized that greater relationship impairment would be associated with worse adaptive social behavior and more emotional and behavioral problems for children. A nested case-control design was used, involving secondary analysis of data collected from a larger prospective cohort study. Two measures were used to assess relationship problems: the Parent-Infant Relationship Global Assessment Scale and a Videotape Rating Scale for Relationship Disorders that was developed as part of this study. Both measures were based upon Axis II of the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood. These measures were used to code videotaped, feeding interactions that occurred of the infant in the home at 3 months of age. When the child was 2 years of age, adaptive social behavior was measured with the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales and emotional and behavioral problems were assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist. Results indicated that, in general, drug detailed comparison of drug exposed and non-drug exposed dyads indicated a higher incidence of specific relationship disorders among drug exposed dyads. The most prominent relationship problems were over-involvement and a mixed relationship disorder that included a gestalt of neglect, anxiety and anger/hostility. Relationship impairment was associated with better adaptive social behavior by the child in domains such as daily living skills and socialization. This finding suggests that children in more dysfunctional relationships may learn to readily comply with their mother's demands to avoid feared consequences and to become more self-sufficient in the face of maternal neglect or insensitivity. Relationships that involved anger and hostility predicted more depression, anxiety and withdrawal for children at age two.
