Book excerpt: The principal goal of this project -- together with a related project funded through the US National Science Foundation -- is to provide a mechanism for quality control that will ensure that seagoing measurement of the oceanic carbon dioxide system made as a part of the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) studies are comparable and accurate, although made by different laboratories at different times. The strategy we have chosen to achieve this has three principal thrusts: the preparation, certification and distribution of reference materials that investigators can use to evaluate their shipboard data quality; the organization of collaborative studies to test various methods and to help the community in identifying improved analytical approaches; and the preparation and distribution of well written Standard Operating. Procedures describing the analysis of the oceanic carbon dioxide system Active participation in various committees and meetings to proselytize the need for a systematic approach to the quality control of oceanic chemical measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our desire to understand the global carbon cycle and its link to the climate system represents a huge challenge. These overarching questions have driven a great deal of scientific endeavour in recent years: What are the basic oceanic mechanisms which control the oceanic carbon reservoirs and the partitioning of carbon between ocean and atmosphere? How do these mechanisms depend on the state of the climate system and how does the carbon cycle feed back on climate? What is the current rate at which fossil fuel carbon dioxide is absorbed by the oceans and how might this change in the future? To begin to answer these questions we must first understand the distribution of carbon in the ocean, its partitioning between different ocean reservoirs (the "solubility" and "biological" pumps of carbon), the mechanisms controlling these reservoirs, and the relationship of the significant physical and biological processes to the physical environment. The recent surveys from the JGOFS and WOCE (Joint Global Ocean Flux Study and World Ocean Circulation Ex periment) programs have given us a first truly global survey of the physical and biogeochemical properties of the ocean. These new, high quality data provide the opportunity to better quantify the present oceans reservoirs of carbon and the changes due to fossil fuel burning. In addition, diverse process studies and time-series observations have clearly revealed the complexity of interactions between nutrient cycles, ecosystems, the carbon-cycle and the physical envi ronment.

Book excerpt: The collection of extensive, reliable, oceanic carbon data is a key component of the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS). A portion of the US JGOFS oceanic carbon dioxide measurements will be made during the World Ocean Circulation Experiment Hydrographic Program. A science team has been formed to plan and coordinate the various activities needed to produce high quality oceanic carbon dioxide measurements under this program. This handbook was prepared at the request of, and with the active participation of, that science team. The procedures have been agreed on by the members of the science team and describe well tested methods. They are intended to provide standard operating procedures, together with an appropriate quality control plan, for measurements made as part of this survey. These are not the only measurement techniques in use for the parameters of the oceanic carbon system; however, they do represent the current state-of-the-art for ship-board measurements. In the end, the editors hope that this handbook can serve widely as a clear and unambiguous guide to other investigators who are setting up to analyze the various parameters of the carbon dioxide system in sea water.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I present several tools to assist the community in making accurate and precise manipulations and measurements of carbonate chemistry parameters, which are essential for understanding, interpreting, and predicting the anthropogenic impact on the chemistry of our oceans. As the frequency of carbonate chemistry measurements increases with interest in the ocean's response to climate change, there is a continued need for confidence in the measurements to ensure data quality and consequent data usefulness. First, I explain the results of an international inter-laboratory comparison of various carbonate chemistry measurements. The majority of the results exhibit agreement within 0.5% of the assigned value for total alkalinity and total dissolved inorganic carbon, with significantly more variability in pH measurements. In many cases there is evidence of significant loss of CO2 from the seawater samples, a particularly alarming bias given how critical these measurements are to the understanding of increasing anthropogenic carbon in our oceans. Carbonate chemistry measurements can also be compromised when taken from environments such as coastal and estuarine seawater, as well as laboratory cultures and aquaria, containing large numbers of suspended biogenic particles. The presence of these particles in a seawater sample may alter the results of the analysis for carbonate chemistry parameters including total alkalinity, total dissolved inorganic carbon, and pH. In this dissertation, I present the verification of a filtration method using a peristaltic pump and enclosed filter housing, which does not alter the dissolved CO2 content of the seawater sample, and thus is suitable for filtration of samples before analysis. Finally, manipulation of carbonate chemistry in the laboratory is a crucial tool for studying the impacts of increasing CO2 on organisms and communities, however is not always straightforward. I developed a carefully controlled aquarium system capable of manipulating the carbonate chemistry, oxygen levels, and temperature of seawater. The multi-stressor nature of the control is critical, particularly regarding the investigation of coastal ocean conditions, which are unique in the magnitude of range and temporal variability possible in these parameters. The aquarium system is dynamically controlled such that variability in pH may be introduced across many time scales. The novel tools presented in this dissertation for the manipulation and measurements of carbonate chemistry will assist in ensuring greater accuracy and understanding of the impacts of changes in carbon dioxide on our oceans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean has absorbed a significant portion of all human-made carbon dioxide emissions. This benefits human society by moderating the rate of climate change, but also causes unprecedented changes to ocean chemistry. Carbon dioxide taken up by the ocean decreases the pH of the water and leads to a suite of chemical changes collectively known as ocean acidification. The long term consequences of ocean acidification are not known, but are expected to result in changes to many ecosystems and the services they provide to society. Ocean Acidification: A National Strategy to Meet the Challenges of a Changing Ocean reviews the current state of knowledge, explores gaps in understanding, and identifies several key findings. Like climate change, ocean acidification is a growing global problem that will intensify with continued CO2 emissions and has the potential to change marine ecosystems and affect benefits to society. The federal government has taken positive initial steps by developing a national ocean acidification program, but more information is needed to fully understand and address the threat that ocean acidification may pose to marine ecosystems and the services they provide. In addition, a global observation network of chemical and biological sensors is needed to monitor changes in ocean conditions attributable to acidification.

Book excerpt: This report explores the potential for mitigating the impacts of climate change by improved management and protection of marine ecosystems and especially the vegetated coastal habitat, or blue carbon sinks. The objective of this report is to highlight the critical role of the oceans and ocean ecosystems in maintaining our climate and in assisting policy makers to mainstream an oceans agenda into national and international climate change initiatives. While emissions' reductions are currently at the centre of the climate change discussions, the critical role of the oceans and ocean ecosystems has been vastly overlooked.
