Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and Rostrum: Sermons, Orations, Popular Lectures, &C Law, some of them as novel as they were important, which had reference to the entrance or the attempted entrance of so many new states into the family of nations; in Europe - Greece, Bel gium, Hungary; on this continent, twelve or fourteen new repub lics, great and small, bursting from the ruins of the Spanish colonial em pire - like a group of asteroids from the wreck of an exploded planet; the invitation of the infant American Re ublica to meet them in Congress at Panama; our commercial r ationa with the British Colonies in the West Indies and on this con tinent; demands of several European states for spoliations on our commerce durin the wars of the French Revolution; our secular controversy wi England relative to the boundary of the United States on the N orth-eastern and Pacific frontiers; our relations with Mexico, previous to the war; the immunity of the American flag upon the common jurisdiction of the ocean; and more im portant than all other questions, foreign or domestic, in its influence upon the general politics of the country, the great sectional controversy - not then first commenced, but greatly in creased in warmth and urgency, which connected itself with the organization of the newly acquired Mexican territories. Such were the chief questions on which it was Mr. Webster's duty to form Opinions; as an influenti lmember of Congress and a political leader to speak and to vote; a member of the Execu tive Government to exercise a powerful, over some of them, a de oisive control. Besides these there was another class of questions of great public importance, which came up for adjudication in the Courts of the United States, which he was called professionally to discuss. Many of the questions of each class now referred to di vided and still divide opinion; excited and still excite the feelings of individuals, of parties, of sections of the country. There are some of them, which, in the course of a long life, under changing circumstances, are likely to be differently viewed at different peri ods by the same individual. I am not here today to rake off the warm ashes from the embers of controversies which have 8 nt their fury and are dying away, or to fan the fires of those w ich still burn. But no one, I think, whether he agreed with Mr. Web ster or differed from him as to any of these questions, will deny that he treated them each and all, as they came up in the Senate, in the Courts, or in negotiations with Foreign powers, in a broad, statesmanlike, and masterly way. There were few who would not confess, when they agreed with him, that he had expressed their Opinions better than they could do it themselves; few, when they differed from him, who would not admit that he had maintained his own views manfully, powerfully, and liberally. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this writing is to produce a story of my experience as a Christian without being overly theological. It is an endeavor to understand my cultural relationships from a Christian cultural perspective. Many profound friends, teachers and pastors have been an immeasurable help and source of strength along the journey. Ministry is not for the faint of heart. Ministerial conviction develops very strong convictions of hope, faith, and prayer. The book is the result of six specific areas of Christianity that I have tried to address with family, church and friends. Many have helped to shape, mold, and at times anchor me. It is written to encourage people who are churched and unchurched to consider an awesome Savior in Christ Jesus; He who came to save the world from sin and reconcile man back to God. His Word says, “All men” are made in His image. That includes the sinner that has not yet been delivered into salvation. I give Him glory and take no credit of my own. This is my story replete with laughter, tragedy, shortcomings, and victories. This book is not meant to harm, notify or crucify any certain denomination, religious belief, or non- belief. Some of the names of churches and people in this book are fictional and are the compilation of many beloved relationships with no specific reference to an individual or denomination, while at other times direct reference is added to substantiate the material in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost Churches of Mississippi is a collection of archival photographs, postcards, and drawings of more than one hundred notable churches and synagogues vanquished by fire, disaster, development, or neglect. Constructed primarily from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s, these places of worship were often among the most visually prominent and architecturally striking buildings in Mississippi. Storms, floods, tornadoes, flames, bulldozers, or the disbandment of congregations razed what once was hallowed. In Lost Churches of Mississippi, architectural historian Richard J. Cawthon reclaims such noteworthy churches as the old St. Paul's Catholic Church in Vicksburg, Bethel Presbyterian Church near Columbus, the old Trinity Episcopal Church in Pass Christian, and the old First Presbyterian Church in Yazoo City. Selections represent over fifty towns and cities throughout the state and are captured in 180 distinctive black-and-white illustrations from several historical archives and other collections. Cawthon discusses the architectural features and historical background of each house of worship and provides a brief introduction that illuminates the study of lost buildings, as well as a glossary of architectural terms and an annotated bibliography. Lost Churches of Mississippi rescues a cardinal legacy and recognizes a portion of the state's rich architectural and religious heritage.

Book excerpt: There are Those is the story of a strong-willed young woman whose ideas were ahead of her time. She was born in Alabama in the 1800s when women were treated like possessions. They were sometimes victims of abuse without recourse. They had no say, could not vote, own property, nor work outside their homes without the permission from a man. They were subjected to the rule of fathers, husbands, brothers, and male employers, if they were fortunate enough to gain employment. The main character, Evinaida Corbitt, fought to change these conditions. She joins a group called the Suffragettes. Their aim is to gain suffrage for women. In addition to the female equality struggle, she was also born a mulatto which brought on another type of discrimination. She is proud of her family and thinks they are the best there is. Her heart is broken when she becomes aware of her grandfathers true feelings, and his sagacious actions. When family secrets and deceptions are revealed, they prove to add to the burden and hurt this young woman bears. Still, truth is resurrected from a grave of lies and Evinaida becomes aware of the skeletons in the closet. Irregardless, there are those who know what they are to accomplish and set about getting the job done, no matter what the costs. These are most often forerunners, as was Evinaida.

This book was released on 1995-08-24 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive study of Mormon architecture. It centers on the doctrine of Zion which led to over 500 planned settlements in Missouri, Illinois, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Canada, and Mexico. This doctrine also led to a hierarchy of building types from temples and tabernacles to meetinghouses and tithing offices. Their built environment stands as a monument to a unique utopian society that not only survived but continues to flourish where others have become historical or cultural curiosities. Hamilton's account, augmented by 135 original and historical photographs, provides a fascinating example of how religious teachings and practices are expressed in planned communities and architecture types.
