Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulmonary Circulation in Health and Disease covers the proceedings of a symposium purposed to create a more complete picture of the pulmonary circulation under normal and diseased conditions through the help of an interdisciplinary group of acknowledged experts. The book is divided into seven parts. The first part discusses morphology in relation to pulmonary circulation and includes an overview of the microscopic appearance of the pulmonary artery and the innervation of the pulmonary circulation, as well as the structure and infrastructure of the pulmonary microvasculature and the changes it undergoes. The second part concerns itself with the different pharmacological studies related to pulmonary circulation. The third part goes in-depth about concepts in pulmonary hemodynamics, such as its occlusion methods, its models based on anatomic and functional data, its active distribution, and gravity nondependent distribution of pulmonary blood flow; the fourth part on the other hand discusses pulmonary blood flow and gas exchange. The fifth part discusses pulmonary endothelial cells, its mechanisms, and its properties; the sixth and seventh parts cover the mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension. The text is recommended for basic scientists studying the lung and for clinicians such as cardiologists and pulmonologists. Those interested in the effects of alterations in lung function will also find this helpful.

Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on the molecular mechanism of congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension, offering new insights into the development of pulmonary circulation and the ductus arteriosus. It describes in detail the molecular mechanisms involved in the development and morphogenesis of the heart, lungs and ductus arteriosus, covering a range of topics such as gene functions, growth factors, transcription factors and cellular interactions, as well as stem cell engineering technologies. The book also presents recent advances in our understanding of the molecular mechanism of lung development, pulmonary hypertension and molecular regulation of the ductus arteriosus. As such, it is an ideal resource for physicians, scientists and investigators interested in the latest findings on the origins of congenital heart disease and potential future therapies involving pulmonary circulation/hypertension and the ductus arteriosus.

It provides comprehensive coverage from diagnosis and clinical evaluation of patients with pulmonary hypertension to imaging techniques, disorders and treatment. This new edition incorporates the latest clinical, pathophysiological and pathological research on pulmonary circulatory disorders. In particular, it provides greater emphasis on the role of the right ventricle in pulmonary vascular disease, updated knowledge on pathobiology and genetics, and includes new material related to imaging and other diagnostic modalities. This edition also reflects new classifications and all the recommendations from the 2013 World Conference on Pulmonary Circulation as well as current guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology and the European Respiratory Society. Thoroughly updated to keep up with the brisk pace of discovery and emerging therapies, the book remains an essential resource by providing a balance between scientific review and clinically relevant guidelines for the busy practicing physician.

Book excerpt: The pulmonary vessels reflect in their structure the stresses to which they are subjected. Over the years a variety of techniques have been applied to the study of the pulmonary circulation to acquire a greater understanding of the alterations occurring in various diseases. Congenital heart disease has been of particular interest since it may impose unusual hemodynamic stresses upon the vessels of the lungs. For over two decades we have had the opportunity, first at Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut and then at University Hospital, San Diego, California, to study the pulmonary and bronchial circulations in patients with congenital heart disease. Much has been learned from the application of new anatomic tech niques to such patients. The clinical correlations, it is to be hoped, will help to bridge the gulf between anatomic and physiologic data. These observa tions have been recorded with the thought that pathology often illuminates normal anatomy, and both contribute to the understanding of physiology. Incursions into the several realms should perhaps not be considered trespass but rather an attempt to glimpse more of one country. The sources of help for a book of this scope are bound to be many and varied. My colleague Dr. Averill A. Liebow introduced me to pathology, and through the years of this study we developed a deep respect for each other as scientific colleagues and friends. Dr.

Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of a symposium on "The Pulmonary Circulation" held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture, in Erice, Sicily, between 16th July and 21st July 1979. This was attended by about 200 participants drawn from Europe as a whole, but the majority were from Southern Europe. The discussion was recorded either in English or Italian and the tapes were reduced to a verbatim typescript by the Ente Nazionale Interpeti Congresso. The verbatim typescript has been edited using a few guiding principles as foliows: Titles and honorifics have been eliminated unless the 1. statement is addressed to a specific person. The style of the speakers in the discussion has been 2. preserved as far as possible and not reduced to a strictly grammatical format. 3. Where references to illustrations (e.g., on the blackboard) are made, the comments have been left unaltered and many are understandable. Removing them detracted from the sense. 4. The air of informality in the proceedings has been preserved so far as possible. 5. The responsibility for the discussion rests solely with the editors, and no contributor has had the opportunity of correcting whae he said. No manuscript was received from one participant, but the 6. discussion of his presentation has been included since it contains some points of substance. G. Cumming and G. There are two main sections: “Basic Mechanisms” and “Clinical Practice”. All the important features of the pulmonary circulation are reviewed — genetics, cell biology, vascular remodelling, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary oedema, etc.

Basing their ideas on a sound understanding of the underlying A&P, Jean-Pierre Barral and Alain Croibier propose manipulation of the arteries to treat the intestines and other internal organs by increasing their blood flow. The arteries, elastic and muscular in structure, and the innumerable nerve filaments which surround them, react ideally to manual treatment. Rich in detailed, high quality illustrations, this book serves as both an anatomical reference and a guide to carrying out visceral vascular manipulations in the most effective way possible and is suitable for osteopathic physicians, osteopaths, chiropractors, physical therapists, manual therapists, physiotherapists, and massage therapists worldwide. Offers practical and clinically relevant information to all practitioners and therapists working in the field Abundant use of pull-out boxes, line artwork, photographs and tables facilitates ease of understanding Prepared by experts of international renown Covers treatment of the main organs including the heart, pancreas, small intestine, colon and other abdominal structures as well as the regions of the neck, skull and pelvic cavity Serves as both an anatomical reference and a guide to carrying out visceral vascular manipulations in the most effective way possible Suitable for osteopathic physicians and osteopaths, chiropractors, physical therapists, manual therapists, physiotherapists, and massage therapists
