Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Statutes Relating to the Presbyterian Church in Canada: With Acts and Resolutions of the General Assembly, and by-Laws for the Government of the Colleges and Schemes of the Church To many who take an active part in the work of the Church the public statutes are not accessible. Even the by-laws or regulations for the management of the colleges and schemes of the Church and the resolutions of the General Assembly bearing upon these, scattered as they are through the minutes of different years, cannot readily be referred to. The consequence is, that when at meetings of the Assembly and other Church Courts, questions arise in the proper disposition of which reference should be made to these statutes, by-laws and resolutions, members are in doubt and difficulty how to deal with them, and what course to pursue. To provide a remedy for this state of things as far as possible, the first edition of this little work was published. During the years which have passed since then there has been not a little public legislation which affects various interests of the Church. The powers of some of the colleges as to conferring degrees in divinity, and the holding of property have been extended. The board of management of the Church and Manse Building Fund has been incorporated. New departments of Church work have been organized, and many of the by-laws and resolutions of the Assembly regulating the management of previously existing schemes have been varied and amended. In the present edition all the public Acts of the Dominion and of the different Provinces which affect, the Presbyterian Church in Canada as a body, the colleges, or any of the incorporated schemes of the Church, have been collected. The Acts as to the holding of congregational property by trustees, in the various Provinces in which such Acts are in force, are also set out. In New Brunswick there is no such general Act, and none has been found among the Acts of Prince Edward Island. The law in the different Provinces upon such subjects as the solemnization of marriage and registration returns, so far as it is important for ministers of the Church, is given, corrected down to the present time. The by-laws and regulations which govern the management of the colleges and schemes of the Church, as they are now in force, are all given in full.
