Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Prosecutor of the Terror, Antoine Quentin Fouquier-Tinville I have to speak to you of something very painful to me. I know how much trouble this child must have caused you. Forgive him, dear sister think of his age and of how easy it is to make a child say what one likes, and even what he does not understand. A day will come, I hope, when he will better realise the value of your goodness and tenderness towards both. It remains for me to confide my last thoughts to you. I should have liked to write them to you from the beginning of my trial, but, besides the fact that I was not allowed to write, its course has been so rapid that I really should not have had the time. A LETTER OF RESIGNATION 35 of affairs. At the beginning of 1793, he was appointed deputy to the Public Prosecutor of the Criminal Tribunal of the Department of Paris, and on February 9, deputy for the Procurator of the Commune of Paris; but he resigned this post in order that he might retain that of deputy to the Public Prosecutor of the Criminal Tribunal, as being more suited to his abilities and tastes. Three days later he wrote to the Procurator-Syndic of the Tribunal for the district of Saint-Quentin: "Paris, this 12th February, 1793, year II. of the Republic. "Citizen Procurator-Syndic, "At the moment when I was elected by my fellowcitizens to the position of judge of the Tribunal for the district of Saint-Quentin, you know that I held the position of director of the jury d'accusation to the provisional Criminal Tribunal established on August 17 last; at least I informed you of this. The duties of this latter position did not allow me to be present at the installation of the Tribunal, and since its suppression I have been busied with the distribution of all the suits in the ten Tribunals. This task has led me further than I expected, and at the moment when I was preparing to take up my duties, the electoral body appointed me to be one of the Public Prosecutors of the Criminal Tribunal of the Department of Paris. This position, which I believed it my duty to accept both on account of its importance and as a return for the confidence shown me by this great city, does not permit me to take up the duties of judge of the Tribunal of the district of Saint-Quentin, and by this present letter I place my resignation in your hands. It is not without some regret that I tender my resignation, because it would have enabled me to live among my...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings were aesthetic, intellectual, and economic touchstones in the Parisian art world of the Revolutionary era, but their importance within this framework, while frequently acknowledged, never attracted much subsequent attention. Darius A. Spieth’s inquiry into Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art reveals the dominance of “Golden Age” pictures in the artistic discourse and sales transactions before, during, and after the French Revolution. A broadly based statistical investigation, undertaken as part of this study, shows that the upheaval reduced prices for Netherlandish paintings by about 55% compared to the Old Regime, and that it took until after the July Revolution of 1830 for art prices to return where they stood before 1789.

Book Synopsis The Other Enlightenment by : Carla Hesse

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution created a new cultural world that freed women from the constraints of corporate privilege, aristocratic salons, and patriarchal censorship, even though it failed to grant them legal equality. Women burst into print in unprecedented numbers and became active participants in the great political, ethical, and aesthetic debates that gave birth to our understanding of the individual as a self-creating, self-determining agent. Carla Hesse tells this story, delivering a capacious history of how French women have used writing to create themselves as modern individuals. Beginning with the marketplace fishwives and salon hostesses whose eloquence shaped French culture low and high and leading us through the accomplishments of Simone de Beauvoir, Hesse shows what it meant to make an independent intellectual life as a woman in France. She offers exquisitely constructed portraits of the work and mental lives of many fascinating women--including both well-known novelists and now-obscure pamphleteers--who put pen to paper during and after the Revolution. We learn how they negotiated control over their work and authorial identity--whether choosing pseudonyms like Georges Sand or forsaking profits to sign their own names. We encounter the extraordinary Louise de Kéralio-Robert, a critically admired historian who re-created herself as a revolutionary novelist. We meet aristocratic women whose literary criticism subjected them to slander as well as writers whose rhetoric cost them not only reputation but marriage, citizenship, and even their heads. Crucially, their stories reveal how the unequal terms on which women entered the modern era shaped how they wrote and thought. Though women writers and thinkers championed the full range of political and social positions--from royalist to Jacobin, from ultraconservative to fully feminist--they shared common moral perspectives and representational strategies. Unlike the Enlightenment of their male peers, theirs was more skeptical than idealist, more situationalist than universalist. And this alternative project lies at the very heart of modern French letters.

Book Synopsis The French Revolution and Historical Materialism by : Henry Heller
Download or read book The French Revolution and Historical Materialism written by Henry Heller and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-03 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text reasserts the Marxist view of the French Revolution as a bourgeois and capitalist revolution. Based mainly on articles published in the journal Historical Materialism it challenges the still dominant revisionist view of the French Revolution. It serves to restore the close tie between the history of the Old Regime and the Revolution. It demonstrates that the rise of a bourgeois capitalist class has a long history dating back to the sixteenth century. Moreover, it shows that the Revolution itself played a large role in strengthening the bourgeoisie politically and economically while bringing about the unification of financial and productive capital. Indeed, it shows that the rising of the masses during the Revolution, viewed by revisionism as economically regressive, in fact helped to bring about the consolidation of capitalism.

Book excerpt: A riveting portrait of the radical and militant partisans who changed the course of the French Revolution A phenomenon of the preindustrial age, the sans-culottes—master craftsmen, shopkeepers, small merchants, domestic servants—were as hostile to the ideas of capitalist bourgeoisie as they were to those of the ancien régime that was overthrown in the first years of the French Revolution. For half a decade, their movement exerted a powerful control over the central wards of Paris and other large commercial centers, changing the course of the revolution. Here is a detailed portrait of who these people were and a sympathetic account of their moment in history.
